Increasing Supporters Involvement in Football

Supporters Direct held a workshop in June to inform supporter groups of the Scottish Government actions in setting up a Working Group to look into how supporters can be better involved and informed of their clubs finances.

Stephen Morrow, the Chairman of the Working Group, believes that supporters, not just shareholders , have a legitimate right to be informed of the financial affairs of their club and its sustainability as they are a major stakeholder in their club.

Clubs issue annual accounts for financial compliance but unless you are an accountant and you have access to the full set of accounts, you cannot make any judgements on a clubs running costs and sustainability. Supporters need to understand the clubs ability to purchase new players and improve facilities without putting the clubs future in doubt through taking on unnecessary debt.

If a club is playing in Europe they have to issue financial information that supporters would find useful, player to turnover ratios ,youth set up and running costs, sponsorship income

Only by being more transparent on the financial costs of their club can the supporters take more responsibility in assisting the club in the areas that are holding back from developing its true potential.

By involving the supporters in the financial modelling of the club it will be a win/win situation and mean a fuller understanding of the restrictions the club faces in trying to improve our standing in Scottish football.

Membership and Business appeal

Since the start of 2014, membership of SMiSA, the St.Mirren Supporters Trust, has been increasing at the rate of approximately 5 to 6 people per month. This increase, along with the members who have been in the Trust for several years is allowing us to become more active in our various aims and initiatives, such as recently becoming the main sponsor of St.Mirren Youth Development Academy, the only five star rated set-up in Scotland.

We aim to continue to grow our membership and therefore our development and our projects because the more the Supporters Trust membership increases the more we are able to represent and provide for the supporters and for St.Mirren.

Therefore we are appealing to all our current members to encourage their friends and relatives to also sign up and join the Supporters Trust and maintain the impetus and outcomes of this years' recruitment drive.

As well as individual supporters becoming members we also want to encourage businesses, or rather the business owners to become members of SMiSA. As a business partner there are no special increased fees or expectations and all that any business would do is to become a member of SMiSA at the minimum normal rate of £2 per month and display a small poster on their premises acknowledging their association with The Supporters Trust, and likewise SMiSA will promote the business permanently on our website and include a direct link to the their website, as well as on events or promotion literature.

Although this concept is a recent initiative the principle is also available to any current members who may wish to promote their own business and SMiSA, through mutual advertising and promotion.

This sign up can be undertaken directly through our website or by contacting us using any of the means listed at the bottom of this page

Thank you for your continued support and active involvement with the Supporters Trust

JW

Playing for the jersey

congratulations to SMiSA members Grieg Martin and Michael Connelly who were both drawn out the hat from the Supporters Trust membership for season 2013/14 to win the SMiSA sponsored tops of Darren McGregor and Jim Goodwin.

Every season The Supporters Trust, as with other businesses and supporters, sponsor two of the players kits in what we consider a very worthwhile sponsorship initiative, particularly as sponsors are given said tops at the end of the season which in the Trust's case are distributed by means of a free raffle within the membership.

As you will see in another part of today's program SMiSA has sponsored Mark Ridders and James Marwood as we know that both are sure to have an exceptional season ahead, rendering their jerseys' the most sought after on the planet in time for the SMiSA membership free draw at the end of the season.

There are still a couple of kits available for sponsorship and we would encourage everyone to think about taking up the option on this initiative and at end the season end up with your very own players jersey that appeared in the cup final !

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone wearing the saints jersey, players and fans, all the very best for an exciting season ahead

Message to Supporters Trust Members

As you may already be aware the membership of The Trust has been increasing steadily since the start of 2014 and due to this increase we have been able to undertake more initiatives and sponsorship opportunities which we will keep you advised of as they transpire.
There are several other events and initiatives that we would like to undertake, however, to allow The Supporters Trust to commit to any additional activities we require SMiSA members to become part of, or assist, the Trust committee. Even if you are unable to commit to any long term ambitions just being able to take on some tasks at specific events would be a big help.
The more each of us is able to input, the more effective and successful The Trust will become, so please consider if you can help in any way to get in touch to discuss the options.
To give you an indication of where we need urgent help in the short term, there is a list of key functions below where we are particularly shorthanded and any assistance would be appreciated

Likewise if any non-members of SMiSA feel they can help with some of the tasks listed below please do not hesitate to contact us at any time

Thank you for your continued support of SMiSA, The St.Mirren Supporters Trust
John White
St.Mirren Supporters Trust Secretary

List of specific tasks / functions
- events co-ordinators: pre planning and organisation, preparation.
- event assistants: on the day support, distributing flyers, collecting tickets etc.
- I.T. and website: updating, publishing articles, social media updates.
- article writers: for general promotion of the trust, also anyone wishing to submit a single article is welcome to do so at any time.
- sponsors co-ordinator: identify new business partners and sponsors willing to support the trust (refer to previous business membership appeal).
- editor, organiser, and contributors: for regular magazine publication.

A load of balls

The St.Mirren Supporters Trusts’ continued support of the clubs Youth Development Academy recently resulted in £ 1535 being presented to David Longwell at Ralston allowing the only five star level facility in Scotland to purchase the latest batch of footballs.
This payment is a contribution from SMiSA which has only been possible due to the continued contributions of its steadily increasing membership. However the continued investment in our club can only be maintained with the active involvement of The Supporters Trust members and the more saints fans who sign up to The Trust, for as little as £2 per month, the more we can generate for investment in the clubs ever improving youth academy, which as you will see on the park today is the future of our club and for the players involved. You can join SMiSA by using any of the contact details at the bottom of the page, you know it makes sense !

Double standards anyone ?

Sept 10th 2014

UEFA publish a report on the effects and potential outcome of the Scottish referendum

Thanks

To all those at the club who helped make the recent Q & A event such a success, particularly to the management team and chairman who willingly put themselves in the firing line.
An attendance of 110 - 120 weren't slow in voicing their opinions and in return they received open and honest answers. Although a 'no entry fee' event, voluntary donations were received on the night and yet another cheque is on its way to the Youth Development Academy for £186 on behalf of all those who attended the event.

The main message that came across during the event was that although the results at the start of the season have been disappointing for the fans no one is more disappointed than the manager and players and every bit of extra effort is being channelled into rectifying the situation. What is needed now more than ever is for the fans continued backing and encouragement to provide the impetuous in maintaining confidence and motivation in support of our team

Shareholding Increase

When SMISA was set up, one of its main objectives was to establish a shareholding in St. Mirren F.C Ltd to create a valid voice for the fans in the running of the club while generating substantial investment in the club. For the purpose of purchasing shares members subscribed £10 per month.

Trusts have been particularly effective at other clubs which have embraced the involvement of fans in the board room. Dundee United for example have a full director and an associate director who have been appointed through the Arab Trust.

Regrettably, this is not the case at Saints and while in its early years SMISA was able to purchase 3877 shares from the club funded by its members subscriptions, in recent years unissued shares have been unavailable for purchase. As a result SMISA had to stop accepting funds from its members for share purchase and subscriptions were reduced to £2 per month. By that time, SMISA had accumulated £50K in cash and the SMISA Board decided to use its cash to purchase shares from private shareholders. This was done with extreme reluctance as obviously the money would go to individuals rather than the club.

SMiSA is pleased to announce that the first wave of private share purchases has been successfully completed and SMISA now owns in excess of 5000 shares. Wave 2 is now under way and the SMISA committee is very optimistic that a further substantial increase in our shareholding will be achieved soon.

If you are a shareholder interested in selling your shares, please contact us. The constitution of the trust does not allow SMISA to sell shares so you can be assured that your shares will be held in perpetuity by a trust of Saints fans with a democratically elected board.

Meantime with the current long running uncertainty over the future ownership of our club, it has never been more important to have a strong representative trust. Our ranks are growing but please don't leave it to others. Join us now and add your opinions and your voice as a Saints Fan.

St.Mirren F.C. not just for some

An article by the BBC's Richard Wilson in October raised the issue of how football clubs attract supporters, citing the point that clubs need to think differently and more creatively as time has moved on from when attendance was habitual and supporters just turned up every second Saturday. The globalisation of the game, it's relentless commercialisation and changing leisure and social attitudes mean clubs need to change their mindset in order to attract supporters from outside their current fan base if football generally and the clubs specifically are to survive and grow in the future.

A simple test of this somewhat overlooked principle in Scottish football might be answered by the question . . when did you last see your team actually promote a game to a non traditional audience ?

The St.Mirren Supporters Trust have been working on this concept for over ten years, by utilising the funds from the membership subscriptions and making the best use of them for the future betterment and promotion of St.Mirren to a 'non traditional' audience. Events and initiatives such the recent SMiSA Panda Club rebranding which resulted in almost double the number of youngsters turning up on the first day, an anti-racism art competition which received over 800 entries from primary schools throughout Renfrewshire, or providing training bibs for one primary school (printed with relevant St.Mirren logos) as well as the event at the Paisley museum in 2006 in recognition of the association between St.Mirren and Paisley over the previous 130 years drew best ever crowds to any event held in the museum for a number of years. Although initiated by SMiSA each of these events and other similar ones were only possible due to the professional input and work of the various public service bodies who ensured the outcomes were successful.

All of these projects and initiatives were designed to promote and provide continuity to our club and the supporters of the future but more importantly were geared towards not just the current fan base and their families but to the wider Renfrewshire community who at the time perhaps had never really been interested in St.Mirren or just hadn't ever been encouraged or ever read anything promoting the club because they hadn't been looking for it.

It is the intention of The St.Mirren Supporters Trust to continue to raise the profile of the club across the whole of Renfrewshire and to encourage attendance and involvement of not just the current fan base whether regular or lapsed attenders, but more importantly to generate and encourage the interest of those that may have never had the awareness or opportunity to attend a match featuring the greatest club on the planet.

To allow the trust to attain one of its aims and continue to improve for the benefit of the future support, we need more of the current support to join SMiSA and help make this ambition a reality and by joining for as little as £2 per month you will be taking part, along with all the other community groups mentioned, in ensuring the future of your club and the future of the young people within Renfrewshire.

And perhaps you might find yourself giving a positive response to the question . . when did you last see your team actually promote a game to a non traditional audience !

Back of the Net’’ Exhibition - Buddies Help Required !

SMiSA has been contacted by John Pressly, one of the curators at Paisley Museum and Carol Craig from Paisley Central Library regarding a proposed St. Mirren exhibition being planned for Summer 2015.

The exhibition will be called 'Back of the Net' and will run from July 18th to August 16th and is about the St.Mirren supporters rather than just a straightforward history of the club. It aims to showcase the community of St.Mirren fans, illustrating the bonds that tie a diverse group of people through a collective experience, and will indirectly tell the history of the club as experienced by its supporters. The aim is to make this exhibition about the fans and they would like to work as closely as possible with as many fans as are willing so that they can make this exhibition a resounding success.

You can help promote St.Mirren in the wider community and share with others your experiences of following the buds. What John and Carol would like to do is collect as many fans stories as they can about the wide aspect of supporting the club. This would include areas such as -

• Why did you choose to support St. Mirren? e.g. local team, family, friends

• What does supporting the team mean to you?

• Memories of games – travel to away games (preferably unusual e.g. Anglo-Scottish cup), cup games / finals, memories of post-cup final Paisley,

• Going to a game – e.g pre-match rituals, far travelled fans

• Memories of Love Street

• Thoughts on move to new stadium / Experience of new place

• Mascot tales

• Life changing events e.g. meeting future partners

• Club in the community – e.g. what it gives back to Paisley, Summer clubs, Youth and schools programmes.

• Meeting the team - any stories about meeting the players (any era)

Any suggestions for areas missed will be gratefully received!

The fan stories will be accompanied by photographs and St.Mirren related memorabilia. Again, they would be looking to every saints fan to provide as much as you would be willing to, for the duration of the exhibition.

No doubt there will be many stories to tell and you can post them to John or Carol at the museum or contact John by email at: [email protected]

A facebook site will be specifically set up in January to allow everyone to submitt their ideas and stories, or in the meantime you can send them through any of the SMiSA contacts at the bottom of this page and we will pass them on, along with your own contact details, unless you have some stories you would rather people didn’t know who you were !

Free Drink !

The Court Bar in St.James Street is the latest SMiSA business partnership and is a long established ‘refreshment outlet’ for St.Mirren fans.

We are delighted that Court Bar owner Alan Rew has joined The Supporters Trus as a business member. Alan is a long-standing St Mirren fan who follows the team home and away so please drop in and say hello to Alan and his staff whenever you are passing and support this local business.

It is one of the few pubs open today so get down after today’s game and celebrate / drown your sorrows (delete as appropriate) in a welcoming atmosphere

As a business member of SMiSA the subscription is the same as any member would pay at £2 per month, the only difference would be that we ask the business to promote The Supporters Trust by putting a promotional poster up on the wall and hold some business cards or membership forms behind the counter for any potential new members wanting to join The Trust. In return SMiSA will promote (and frequent) the business in the hope that other saints fans will realise we need to be supporting our local businesses for the benefit of the area and the community generally.

If you have a business you feel might benefit from this arrangement and belive in the ethos of SMiSA please get in touch using any of the contact details below. Likewise if you already are a member of SMiSA and would like to promote your business and The Supporters Trust in this way please get in touch.

The Trust A.G.M.

Has been pencilled in for the weekend of Saturday the 4th April so please make a note of this on your new 2015 saints calendar.

The chances are the game due on this day will be rearranged to an early kick off which in the past has resulted in a larger attendance at the AGM.

This being Scottish Football we are confident that any change of kick off time from 3pm on the Saturday, will be made to give fans as little time as possible to make new arrangements, or worse still the opposition on the day may choose to play a critical friendly match instead. However no matter what the outcome of any match arrangements The Trust AGM must legally be held within a week or so either side of the above date and we will keep everyone informed nearer the time.

Although the venue has still to be confirmed it is likely to be in the town centre and will cater for the ever increasing Trust membership numbers and allow them to review the activities of SMiSA and asses the performance over season 2014/15, debate where we are now compared to this time last year and more importantly participate in setting our targets and ambitions for the year ahead.

As always a full set of accounts will be made available to every member for review a few weeks before the AGM so if for any reason any members have not been receiving email or postal updates from The Trust please get in touch, using any of the contact details below, to ensure we have your correct details.

We will again this year be opening the AGM to allow members guests to attend, the only criteria being they will be unable to vote on any Trust elections, so again if any guests wish to attend please let us know beforehand using the contact details below.

We care about money

Shortly after Qatar was announced as the venue for the 2022 world cup, the suggestion that changing the date of the tournament from the traditional June / July dates, (at which time temperatures in the region were described as a ''highly critical risk'') it was met with a reaction from all the regional footballing confederations, particularly those who felt that to change it was unnecessary.
Due to the reaction from both for and against viewpoints, a FIFA taskforce was set up, led by FIFA vice president Shaikh Salman. In the year since it was set up Salman has travelled the globe to speak to individuals and organisations who would be affected by any change.
The individual confederations, leagues, clubs and broadcasters were all consulted on the prospect, basically all the important bodies in football.

So don't expect a visit from the FIFA taskforce anytime soon for a discussion with players or fans to get their view on the situation.

The task force is due to present its preferred option, and is expected to be rubber stamped by FIFA's ruling executive committee in March 2015

Game Off !

Its been discussed for years as a possible option to increase attendances and interest in Scottish Football but summer football will never be tried voluntarily in Scotland because only short term financial return is what motivates the powers within football, that or a change is forced upon those pulling the strings of our game.

If nothing else the possible change of the dates of the world cup in 2022 (backhanders pending) might force some form of summer football to be trialled in the UK for that season and maybe then we will know for sure whether it works or not, what do we have to lose by trying it ?

Thanks

To all new members who have signed up to The St.Mirren Supporters Trust recently. Our membership has more than doubled in the last year and with The Trust continuing to increase its shareholding and proxy voting this puts the fans in a stronger position than they ever have been at our club.
Increased membership has the immediate result of SMiSA having the ability of promoting our club further in the wider community ,potentially increasing investment in the club, and having a more credible representation of saints fans, which you can contribute to and be a part of. So if you have ever considered joining SMiSA in the past but never quite got round to it, now is the time to join by using any of the contact details at the bottom of the page

SMiSA Panda Club

congratulations to Noah Young on winning the draw for the 'sports kit voucher' drawn at the recent game against Dundee. This is a further example of the incentive by The Supporters Trust in conjunction with St.Mirren and JD Sports to encourage young football fans to get involved with St.Mirren. The next draw is due in March

Trust Website

due to a new addition on the SMiSA committee our website is due for a revamp shortly where it is hoped that more up to date information and content will be available to all saints fans as well as providing the opportunity for our sponsors and members to input their own ideas. Over the next couple of weeks please consider taking a visit our website and facebook page for all that is happening with The Supporters Trust and we would welcome feedback on any Trust related issue.

Kenny McLean

As with every saints fan we were disappointed to lose such a talented and key player, particularly during such a critical stage in the season. However we wish him well as he had played his part in our clubs history for several years now having come through the ranks of the clubs Youth Academy. This is all the more reason we as a group of saints fans should continue to support the Youth Development Academy and help maintain the conveyor belt of new talent coming through, some of whom will be on show today. So lets enjoy and encourage the young talent at our club and soon we will be asking Kenny who ?

AGM

we can confirm The St.Mirren Supporters Trust AGM will take place on Saturday 4th April, 11am till 1pm at St.Mirren Park in the function suite, which the club have kindly provided for us.

we had hoped to have the meeting before or after a match but due to several fixtures being rearranged for TV it left no Saturday home games around this time suitable to have the AGM

despite having no alternative but to have the meeting on a 'non match day', leading to some inconvenience for fans particularly those who live outside the Renfrewshire area, we are hopeful that at least having it on a Saturday will encourage the majority of members to attend

more details on the agenda and copies of the accounts will be sent out to all members during March for their review and comments on the day

please be aware the AGM as well as being for SMiSA members will be open to allow every saints fan to attend

As per The Trust constitution this meeting will be to fundamentally allow St,Mirren supporters to question, review, propose, vote and input to any subject relating to SMiSA and provide direction for the future of The St.Mirren Supporters Trust

hope to see you there

If Carlsberg did Elections

as football supporters, isn't it great that politicians care so much about our interests and tell us that they are the ones who are going to be responsible for changing the rules and allow us to buy alcohol at matches. Unfortunately this seems to be the only subject that they seem prepared to stand up and shout about, unsurprisingly a few months before an election. Pity they sat on this subject for the last 30 plus years, during that time ignoring, and still ignoring today, every fan related issue. I don't remember them speaking out for us during the all seated -v- safe standing debates, or the fact that kids can be refused entry when in possession of a small juice carton, or ticket prices, or changes in kick off times, or how about putting through a bill allowing stadiums to be listed as a 'value of community assets' as in England, which prevents a stadium being turned into a car park by an unscupulos club owner (and allaying any fears saints fans have about 75% of our clubs shares being sold to a single owner).
As an alternative how about the club board, the local police, the stewards, and the politicians all meeting with the Supporters Trust to ensure that collectively any issues or situations involving fans can be discussed sensibly for the benefit and mutual understanding of all concerned within football, and help provide a positive long term future for football within Renfrewshire and Scotland ?
As opposed to a knee jerk politically motivated reaction !
If you genuinely want to bring about change for the better in football, it has to be planned and co-ordinated with involvement of ALL the stakeholders
Lets set an example to the rest of the country, so, Politicians, St.Mirren FC, Match Day Commander, Head of Security, SPFL, we await your call.

health n safety - mibees aye, mibees naw

Ever wondered why the police, the councils, the SFA, the SPFL are so non-committal and reluctant to get involved in any debate on safe standing ? but turn a blind eye to widespread unsafe standing, for example at the cel#i@ game recently.

Any chance someone could tell us all what the latest rules are and then apply them across the board, rather than on a whim.

Your Club Needs You

As the higher population countries within European club football, are hinting at removing Scottish clubs, among others, from the champions league, the reaction here was and should be predictably concerned at this development.

Highlighting the fact that this move is being driven by TV cash and the potential high financial rewards for some, as opposed to a football for all and competitive inclusion ethos. Scottish Football in general, the media, the ruling bodies and some of the clubs are angered at the suggestion of Europe creating an elitist champions league where the champions of some leagues would not be welcome. ie US !

You can understand their disdain, however for some of us it all sounds a bit familiar !

Cast your mind back to the creation of the SPL several years ago when the principle of creating a 'premier' league was lauded as being the saviour of our game and that it was right and proper that the wealth distribution should be weighted towards the top end clubs to ensure they could grow and compete better in Europe. Doh !

No surprise either that it was pretty much the same voices pushing the principle then as those that are complaining about the same principle now, the only difference being they could now find themselves at the opposite end of the concept.

It's no coincidence that during the years of decline of Scottish clubs in Europe that there has been a lack of finance to allow us to be able to compete with the larger nations clubs and at the same time domestically financial income has reduced significantly in comparison to England for example.

So what should we do ?

Well we could do worse than do what those clubs disregarded at the inception of the SPL did, they got on with it and made the best of what they had.

The growth of Supporters Trusts and fan involvement at clubs has increased significantly over the past 10 to 15 years driven by ordinary fans and local businesses, 'the real stakeholders', who with a desire to ensure the future of their clubs within their towns and cities, the clubs' in turn looked to their potential fan base and have made some genuine efforts to engage with their support and the local communities

Those clubs that have recognised and provided for the local community and involvement of supporters as part of their long term strategy are able to create a more stable and enthused fan base, and the more enthusiastic the community and fan base is the better the return back towards the club, not just financially but in the clubs credibility with many having improved on providing facilities, training and education for all ages in many different subjects and health benefits.

There is a need however when a club recognises and engages with their fan base that those in the community and supporters of the club also become more active in promoting the club and contributing or participating in any way they can.

SMiSA has been for the past fourteen years, and will continue to be, a vehicle to allow fans to play a part at St.Mirren whether it be through members subscriptions which supports the Youth Academy, The SMiSA Panda Club or various supporter events and community projects, however what we need is for this good work to continue and for every supporter to become more involved in any way they can and help ensure the future of their club.

This outlook is critical for the future, at least until we all get an even share of the Champions League money.
