Gerry Baker

The American striker

He was no more American than his brother Joe was English... !

Both of Gerry's parents were Scottish. His father was a sailor and Gerry was born in New York when his father was living there. They moved to Liverpool when Gerry was 2 and his brother Joe was born there. 6 weeks later they moved back to Scotland where the young Baker's grew up.

Scottish parents, Scottish accents, Scottish bred.

Yet neither were allowed to play for Scotland...

Joe Baker went on to play 8 times for England and was the first player to ever win a cap for England despite never having played in England. Gerry was capped by the USA.

The spearhead of St. Mirren's very own famous 5:

Rodger, Bryceland, Baker, Gemmell, Miller

Without him, 1959 probably wouldn't have happened.

Correct Sir, famous five and fantastic team indeed.

Probably the only Saints team i can ryhme off without hesitation and i was minus 3 in 1959.

My Dad told me all about Baker, Bryceland and those legends when i was a wee boy.
