Saints decided that he'd make a much better centre forward and brought him to Love Street In November 1958. He made his debut in a 3-2 win over Stirling Albion at Love Street and scored along with Bryceland & Lapsley. His arrival sparked a revival in Saints fortunes that season. By the end of that season he had bagged 27 goals in the league and Scottish Cup. He scored in every round of the Scottish Cup that season as we won the cup. He began with 4 goals in a 10-0 route of Peebles Rovers in the 1st Round at Love Street in front of 8,000 spectators. In the following 3 games Saints went on an incredible run, beating Dunfermline 6-2 at Love Street followed by a 6-4 win over Dundee at Dens with Bakker netting another 4 then a 4-1 win over Motherwell at Love Street with Baker getting a double. The next game was the Scottish Cup tie with Motherwell at Love Street. In front of a crowd of 26,956 Saints won 3-2 with Baker, Rodger & Bryceland getting the goals. The Scottish Cup Quarter Final saw a crowd of 14,649 turn up at Love Street to see Saints win 2-1 with goals from Rodger & Baker. The Semi Final saw Saints thrash Celtic 4-0 in front of a crowd 0f 73,855. Baker, Miller (2) and Bryceland bagged the goals. Just before the Semi Saints had warmed up with 10-0 Renfrewshire Cup Semi Final win over India of Inchinnan. Baker scored 6 goals in front of a crowd of over 3,000. (Incidentally, these 6 goals are not included in the 27 for the season mentioned above!) Saints final 2 league games of the season saw Baker help us to a 4-3 win over Partick and a 4-1 win over Third Lanark. Goals galore! The final, of course, saw Saints beat Aberdeen 3-1 in front of a crowd of 108,000 and goals from Bryceland, Miller & Baker. I think I am right in saying that that was the last time that a club game in the UK attracted a crowd of over 100,000 which didn't involve either of the Old Firm? Season 59/60 saw Gerry Baker score 40 goals between the 3 main competitions - albeit 10 of them came in the 15-0 Scottish Cup win over Glasgow University. He also bagged another 6 in the Renfrewshire Cup. And note that none of his goals were penalty kicks! Among the highlights of that season Gerry Baker scored 4 goals in a 5-0 route of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. He also scored twice in an 8-1 league win over Arbroath at Love Street. In October 1959 he scored twice as Saints won 3-1 against Rangers at Ibrox... Saints first win at Ibrox for 55 years! He also scored a hat trick against Clyde at Shawfield where the game was abandoned at half time due to fog with Saints leading 4-2! The Scottish Cup that season saw Saints knocked out by Celtic after 2 replays! The first game saw a 1-1 draw at Love Street in front of a crowd of 36,220. The replay saw an incredible 4-4 draw at Parkhead in front of 38,000 with Baker getting on the scoresheet. Unfortunately we lost the 3nd replay 5-2 at Parkhead in front of a crowd of 51,000. That Scottish Cup defeat obviously took the wind out of Saints sails as we lost the next game 7-0 at home to Stirling Albion with the famous 5 all in the side! At the start of season 1960/61 Gerry Baker scored in a 4-3 home defeat by Manchester City in the Paisley Charity Cup in front of a crowd of 15,000. That performance was important as it earned Baker a big money move to Maine Road in the October of that season. Gerry Baker was possibly the greatest forward ever to play for St. Mirren. St Mirren do hold the honour for at least one cup final held in Scotland. Scottish Challenge Cup vs Falkirk 13,763 at Fir Park - 12th December 1993 that goes down in history as one of the wettest and coldest a Saints support have endured. Brrrr. It's possible that Saints may hold the record for an ASC Final in Scotland, but there does not seem to be a record kept of attendances for this tournament. Only Hearts and former Airdrieonians contested ASC finals in 1971 & 1972. St Mirren are the only Scottish club to have contested two finals (1978 and 1980) and the only Scottish club to have won the cup. For younger readers it should be noted that both Celtic and oldco Rangers contested the Anglo-Scottish Cup - neither won the tournament despite both clubs putting out their best sides. Both teams supporters were involved in riots at Burnley (Green Filth) and Chesterfield (Blue Filth) because their teams were beaten on the pitch and their fans tried to stop the games. FTOF. Blimey! A St. Mirren legend, his name alone stirs up feelings amongst most supporters. He's up there with other legendary names like Cockles Wilson and Davie Lapsley in that his name alone will stir up a fantastic nostalgia for some and a hankering to have seen these guys in their prime for most of the rest of us. I saw Gerry play quite a number of times - he was fast, had a real eye for goal and whilst not tall could take all the attentions given to him by the opposition defenders. I did a post a few months ago and compared his goal ratio to many St Mirren strikers (through the years) and to some of the all time greats in the game in general - his goals per game ratio was away up there with the very best. Only Joe McBride of Celtic (from memory) was so much better. Sad to hear of his passing, - now he was a GREAT LEGEND in the buddies Hall of Fame!
