For all Victor was Barca captain and capped for Spain neither were the same force they are now. I remember him being class at points but he wasn't the equivalent of signing xavi or iniesta would be these days (or in the last 3-4 years).

Lambert achieved a lot in the game starting off with winning the Scottish cup with us as a 17 year old. What he did with Dortmund was brilliant and he played big part in making celtic credible challengers to the cheats that were Rangers.

Peter Weir also achieved a lot in football after leaving us and before returning to us. His record at Aberdeen was pretty phenomenal. Winning leagues, domestic cups and having success in Europe.

For me it would be Lambert.

Just checked Victors wiki page.....
2 Cup Winners Cup, 1 runners up
1 La Liga
2 Spanish Cups
1 Spanish Super Cup
2 Spanish League Cups
1 Italian Cup
With 60 appearances for Spain thrown in......not a bad career.

It's definitely not a bad career and I hope my post doesn't come across as me trying to insinuate that it was a bad career. His signing was massive.

In terms of post Saints career it's hard to look past him. With all the fame bestowed on him for *that* goal it's easy to forget he was part of the incredible Brian Clough eras at Derby and Nottingham Forest.

Not bad that we can lay claim to producing him, the last Scot to lift the Cup Winners' Cup in Steve Clarke and the last Scot to play in a Champions League Final winning side (Darren Fletcher was an unused sub) in Paul Lambert :)

Oh, so it isn't best ex-player. but your opinion on who went on to be the best at the clubs they played at after leaving us? Have I got this even remotely correct now? Best to cover all bases. In my opinion only, the best St Mirren player I've ever seen was Tony Fitzpatrick. In today's market, Fitzy in his prime would sign for a really big club and his career would easily be on a par with the likes of Graeme Souness. My all time favourite St Mirren player is Gunni Torfason. The St Mirren player who I think did the best after leaving us would likely be Paul Lambert, as winning a European Cup, gaining the respect of Bundesliga star colleagues, starring for Celtic and Scotland before having a long career in management is pretty good going. I also respect what Kirk Broadfoot did after leaving us - played and scored for Scotland, got to a European final, was constantly played out of position at a club where the fans never rated him, yet knuckled down and any time I saw him, was their best defender. Charlie Adam did not too bad either. Kenny McLean and John McGinn could still do something, while Kyle McAllister could do something after Derby give him his senior competitive start in 2020.

I like more ex-players than I dislike , in fact there are very few I didn't like , in some way or another..

Jackie Copland was my favourite player when I was a kid , possibly because he was the first player I ever met and he was obviously a true gent and had time to talk to two of his young fans . I will never forget that .All the players were fantastic back when Jackie was a player for us , but for me Jackie was a stand out and gave his all ..

As seen above some of our ex- players went on to achieve great things in football but for me Jackie will always be my favourite player . .

When I were a lad my first favourite player was Willie Fulton - he always seemed to have so much time probably because he was a great reader f the game.  Then came Iain Munro (I know, I know - but he was a cultured fitba player) and then the great Alexander Hector McMillan McLeod (my dad knew his dad that's how) who was easily the best goalscorer I've seen in the stripes (about 60 goals in only 90 games for us).  Since then I'll admit to a soft spot for big Basil who gave his all every time he put on the stripes and I know he was gutted to miss out on the final in '87 and he was genuinely sad when he left us.

Playing in a St Mirren Shirt for me its got to be Frank McGarvey. His work rate was awesome and every ball the team played was directed towards him. Throw in, passes, corners, free kicks everything was aimed at McGarvey and he scored 102 goals for the mighty saints. For me he was top man.

As you can tell from the picture on the left its Ally McLeod for me Which other player has scored 4 against them at Ibrox and playing for a lower league team as well. As said above 60 goals in 90 games will never be surpassed Iain Munro said Ally passed the ball into the net

And he wore the best strip we ever had

There are a few who have gone on to better  things like Gordon McQueen. But What other player held the title of "Best goal of the world cup,.... EVER"? Archie for me.

Best goal of the World Cup ever? C'mon now.

In fact I've always thought there was something a bit iffy about that goal.

He gets the ball in the inside right position and he gets six touches, all with his left foot. Meanwhile the Dutch defenders are doing a good job of jumping out of his road.

Remember also the best result for Holland that afternoon was a narrow defeat. That meant they would qualify from second place and avoid Argentina in the next round.
