    Welcome back Mr James Goodwin

EVERY-SINGLE-THREAD[emoji35] What the f**k is wrong with you guys (you know who you are) that you have to drag every thread into the mire with your petty bickering. Nobody gives a f**k so do us all a favour and take it elsewhere. This thread was about Goody. The amount of posts that have f**k all to do with his appointment are just depressingly familiar.

Goodwin isn't imminently incoming for f**k sake. At least not to the stage it is a 'done deal'. This isn't even speculation, its just common sense. Alloa would have absolutely 100% commented on their website that they'd accepted an approach from St. Mirren. That in turn would have confirmed OK was gone from us and been widely reported. None of that has happened, so if Goodwin is a done deal, we've illegally tapped him up and offered him terms which he's accepted without the permission fo his current club and we are, therefore totally f**ked. Common sense dictates it's a load of shite. Common sense has long since departed this station though.

I don’t get the anti Lyons feeling amongst a certain element. Why oh why does there have to be a boo boy for the more rabid fans to froth over? I always felt the boy gave 100% in every game he played
  5. 14 points
Was at the game yesterday and have since watched the full match on Buddievision (I'm a glutton for punishment). I am now convinced more than ever that Ethan Erhahon has been unfairly picked on by the boo boys. As many others have previously stated he is certainly not a fullback and he was at fault for at least one of the goals and also made a few mistakes. But the boy has quality which others have recognised - he has good movement, poise, balance, neat ball control and he is a trier. Remember he is only 18 and is certainly worth a try in our midfield instead of regularly being played out of position which is hardly helping his confidence. He contributed more to our forward movement yesterday than any of our established midfielders and has the potential to be our biggest asset within the next couple of years - so give the boy a break.

It was dropped until GLS had that interview. If the information is inaccurate and incorrectly portrays Kearney, can you blame him for responding as such? He’s well within his rights to respond, GLS should have kept his mouth shut because he’s just digging that hole deeper and deeper.

    Welcome Mihai Popescu

For me Mihai is far above our normal standard of defender. Him, Hladky and Muzek transformed our defence from one that was losing games to one that started to draw then win games. At our level a great centre half is more important that a striker IMHO. If we are not conceding then we are not losing. And draws can give us a base to work from and build confidence. We just need any player per game to score and maybe snatch a 1-0 win. Livi had Halkett last season who made them very hard to beat and got them points. Let's see how they get on this season without him. It is ironic we paid £75k for a no user like Heaton yet cannot find the cash for an exceptional centre half (for us that is) like Mihai. Fingers crossed it is not too late.

If true, Tony is coming out of this way better than Gordon Scott. Tony picked a good one in OK. OK has kept us in the top flight and won over the vast majority of the fans who attend the games. He has been an absolute credit to himself and the Club. A smashing guy who had the courage to take on the shitfest that was St Mirren FC post Stubbs. I believe that with a decent budget Oran will bring the good times back. So disappointing that we appear to be on the verge of losing him. This doesnt make our Board look competent at all.

Obviously not in the way you mean but at least the fans were compensated' I think there were about six of us in Belfast for the Rosario match. When our club announced compensation for the fans who paid to go to Coleraine I was up front and admitted I had still went. I fired in my receipts anyway but wasn't holding my breath. I had a great weekend but it wasn't money I would have spent if the Coleraine game hadn't been scheduled. The Club, no doubt with GLS's blessing acknowledged I had a great weekend. Feck we had our photo's taken on the Friday night with half the St Mirren team it would have been hard to deny we hadn't had a great weekend. They refunded 50% of my claim as compensation for the team not playing on Saturday. I have no doubt they gave full refunds to anyone who was out of pocket and never went. So thanks St Mirren and GLS for the gesture. I've ploughed the refund into Buddie vision and I'll treat myself to a few pressies out the club shop with the rest but it's fantastic to see that underneath the politics of the managerial skulduggery they looked after us fans. Well Done GLS.

No Shull, I will not allow your depressing outlook on life to be bolstered by pishy fact grabbing without a modicum of intellect. You are one of those fun hoovers, devoid of joy and ambition. Purchasing a player of quality, whom we can afford at a time when we need him is NOT akin to the nonsense that nearly saw us go out of business in the early 1990's. I recall those days all too well. What should we use our income for? paying off managers every year or occasionally should we invest in the team when an opportunity like this presents itself. Teams around us occasionally "throw the dice" and teams around us occasionally break into the top six. Saint Johnstone, Motherwell and Kilmarnock all regularly out perform us whilst we are always left looking on. It is time that we redoubled our efforts and tried to match those who leave us behind every year. None of those three clubs are bigger than us but they DO deliver better league positions year on year.....this depressing fact shows that our club is NOT doing as well as it should be. With money coming in from players like Kenny McLean and John McGinn would it be reasonable to spend SOME of that cash on a quality player (who can always be sold on) or should we stay in the bargain basement having never tried? Selling players for profit (like the two above) is essential but if we cannot re-invest something in the team then what is the point? Big Mihai would in all likliehood generate a profit as players of his quality don't tend to stay in Scottish football long before an overly rich English club comes a calling!

Canny believe the c**t took us from near Championship relegation to being an established Premier League side, our first League Cup final in over 50 years and gave us shite memories like pumping Celtic 4-0, winning the cup double and pumping Motherwell in the Scottish Cup. What an absolute fud he was, I’d have much rather seen us relegated to League One.

Not at all. Popescu and Hladky had several appearances at the top division in their countries before joining us. As did Tomas Malec and Filip Hlohovsky who were both unsuccessful in their trials with us. Tonight you have 6 guys on trial, 3 of whom not only haven't had first team experience but are seemingly untraceable on Google. The other three are Louis Longridge, Oan Djorkaeff and a Haitian International holding midfielder who has just been released from a French fourth division side. Suppose most of us expected new faces of similar calibre to what we managed to conjure up in January and not pissing about wasting time giving a shirt to guys who haven't done anything and clearly aren't going to cut it. It was the same at the Sunderland game last season where we handed out 3 shirts to guys who were just nowhere near the standard needed, and that was among last seasons squad at this point!!!

It would have been tragic to fail to qualify from that League Cup Group - you can forgive the one off result every now and again against lower league opposition, but to fail to beat both Spartans and Queen’s Park in 90 minutes within a week of each other was extremely worrying. While the exit to Aberdeen was expected, the manner of the defeat was shocking. The three league games he didn’t win were very telling - a piss poor performance against Livi (which if I’m right was their only victory on the road all season), the debacle at Tynecastle and the defeat at Ibrox which could have been horrendous if not for the early red card. With Kearney it depends what your own expectations were. For myself and many others, it was purely survival. Sep-Jan for me was about not falling behind the others, and I think Oran did well adding Anton, Hammill, Lyness and Jackson - one improved the defence and certainly helped Jack Baird to improve his performances. One scored and assisted a fair few goals before his spell ended, and two of his goals were GOTS contenders. One would end up our joint top scorer for the season. One only played four times but put in decent enough performances that we have brought him back in as backup to Hladky. January was about improving the team, and between Oran and Gus we seen that through signing the likes of Hladky, Popescu, Muzek, McAllister and Dreyer. Much like JR’s survival effort, it took time to get to grips with things but eventually we became a very difficult side to beat, and after offering vey little going forward we created many more chances. Oran got the best out of Ryan Flynn and that was like a having new signing. Bairdy continued to thrive from his days with Anton (as did Paul McGinn) and barely put a foot wrong once he had better defenders next to him and more midfield support. In the end we finished a massive 11 points clear of Dundee - yes they were shite, but 11 points clear was unimaginable in September. Accies scraped it by 1pt, and goal difference was in our favour by absolute miles. It may have taken penalties to beat Dundee United, but that was a side who dumped us out of the cup three months previously - we did a much better job of matching them when the playoffs came. Oran has proven history of improving a club - he left Coleraine in a much better position than he began, and given time, he may have achieved the same here. I get your point, and I think it comes down to what your and my expectations were after Stubbs got hoofed in September, and perhaps that’s why we see different here.

Watched Oran's interview at Coleraine. He is VERY flat there. No smiles or any real warmth. He is clearly unhappy and interesting that he mentioned a period of grief too. I don't detect any genuine enthusiasm from him here. Clearly he wanted to stay here and has been forced out for whatever reason.

    Top Four Says Tony

As someone who was prepared to take a generous view of Tony's earlier pronouncements I think it is bad timing to come out with the aiming for the top 6 quotes. Goodwin hasn't even met the squad yet and we still have a few signings to make. I think most fans would agree with Tony we should be aiming to try and make the top 6 and he is right that other small provincial clubs have made the top 6 (most of the examples he mentioned are now Championship clubs) and there should be no reason why St Mirren shouldn't aim to break into the top 6 and reach that level from time to time. Most of the clubs Tony mentioned as Top 6 finishers also made the Top 6 at a time when Rangers had been liquidated and RIFC were in the lower leagues and Hibs and Hearts had been relegated and Aberdeen had been inconsistent and often finished in the bottom 6. It's now a lot harder for the smaller provincial clubs to make the Top 6 unless Celtic, RIFC, Aberdeen, Hibs or Hearts have a really bad season - they are all significantly financially better off than Motherwell, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, St Mirren, Hamilton, Livingston, Ross County, Inverness, Partick Thistle etc. I do find it a bit worrying that after staying up on a penalty shoot-out in the play offs that Tony has said Jim Goodwin would not have been appointed if he said the aim would be to avoid relegation next season. I think most fans would settle right now for avoiding relegation and the play-off and seeing 10th or better as an improvement, and if we can stablisise the club and consolidate and improve each season for a few years that would be the time to start publicly talking about the top 6. When the fixture list came out, bearing in mind how last season panned out, and given the amount of signings still to be made, there aren't any easy games - Ross County comfortably finished ahead of Dundee United last season and won't be push-overs. I would hate to think that if we had a slow start or were still signing players at the end of the window and looking at free agents after that, that the new manager could already be under pressure to be in contention for the top 6 this season.

Think someone needs to have a word with Alan Wardrop after this. He retweeted a journalist saying a statement is imminent about Orans departure, commenting on players about to be signed. Think he enjoys the attention, needs to start acting like a director and not someone playing the role. Makes us, and him, look amateur.

If this is in fact the case, we shouldn't be looking at anything lower than high end six figures. Massively important player to us and if we do sell, it must be for a high price given that the buying club certainly have the resources to cough up if they want him. None of this 'take 200k and run, he's only got a year left and we got him on a freebie anyway' nonsense. I'd rather keep him for another year and use the time to source out a replacement than lose him for a pishy wee amount.

Forget all the club legend and hero stuff. Jim Goodwin will be appointed SMFC manager on merit due to the superb work he has done at Alloa. Done an absolutely outstanding job in what last year was a hugely competitive league, so much so that Falkirk went down and Partick nearly. His work at Alloa was not just last year but the seasons before also. His recruitment at Alloa was first class and his man management is outstanding. No suprise that Jack Ross took him to Alloa. A top appointment for us and fairly certain he will push us on.

Why “fortunately?” He is one of only four men to bring Saints a major Scottish trophy, and led us to our highest finish since the 80s, a finish we haven’t bettered since. Wee Danny has been one of our best managers in many years.
