For all the abuse he receives from a minority of our supporters I firmly believe that Danny Lennon is our best manager in the 25 years arguably 30 years. The reasoning behind me saying that is he steered us to our best top flight position in that time and winning the league cup in his three and a half season stewardship. Puts some people's criticism into perspective. Can you name a better one in the 25 years?

League cup winners (also beating one of the ugly sisters on the way to the final) 4 yes FOUR outstanding youngsters playing in the top league and playing brilliantly a legend up front and a dynamic play maker playing just behind top class goal keeper albeit on loan if not then another outstanding youngster in waiting a captain i would NOT swap for anyone(we have been crying out for an Aber type player for YEARSSSSSSSS) When the above does not click the whole package is massively disfunctional !!!!!!! How can you blame the manager??????? we are not the complete package, we are not Barcelona we are not scum from Glasgow we are not super wealthy we do not have the devine right to win every week what we do have is black and white blood whether we win or lose because thats what saints do WINNING IS A BONUS with our budget a least we will have a club to support every season
  7. 3 points
Tom Hendrie wasn't let down by the board, the board lived within their means and rewarded him a 5 year contract, a decision that they would later regret. Tom was so good he went on to be sacked by Alloa. Gus McPherson had the same budget and was more successful in gaining promotion and keeping us in the top flight. However the standard of football was dire at times. Gus was so good he went on to be sacked by QOS Danny has also had the same type of budget and won the cup and highest position in the league and tried to entertain with good football. The one advantage Danny has that the other managers didn't have is he is on a much more even playing field. The others had to compete with clubs that were living way out of their means and we were competing against International players that most SPL clubs had. When it's all said and Danny is probably our best manager in the last 25 years, he has won a major trophy and guided us to our highest position in the league while trying to entertain the fans and also having an excellent relationship with them. The picture of him turning to watch the fans as the 3rd goal was being celebrated by us in the magical cup final will remain with me until I die and earn Danny legend status. However he has lost his way a bit and the past doesn't guarantee the future, if he doesn't sort out our current shortage of squad options then he could lose his job just as the other managers did.

Best St Mirren Manager In Last 25 Years

Danny Lennon has been our best manager of the last 25 years - closely followed by Tom Hendrie, until it's arithmetically impossible for him to catch Danny.

Whatever the result this has the potential to be a cracking game of football and I truly wish I was there to see it. Dundee utd have got some exciting young players but so have we. In the few games I've seen, John McGinn has the potential to go to the very top. His style and attitude remind me of players in years gone by. He is the kind of player I would include even when he is off the boil, he has that bit of magic you might only need once in a game. You might have gathered he is my favourite saint at the moment! Anyway, back to the game. If we win this tomorrow it would be a huge confidence booster for us. I just worry that if utd score the first goal our heads will go down which seems to have happened the last couple of games. Let's take the game to them, score first and we are on our way! COYS!

It as a £30k profit. Inconsequential in the grand scheme of things when up against club's who were literally spending £ millions in wages and transfer fees more than us. St. Johnstone were the next lowest wage spenders and yet they spent DOUBLE what we did. As I have pointed out in my last post. Look at St. Mirren now and look at Dunfermline now. You wanted us to go down the Dunfermline route*. How wrong you were. * Not that it would have possible as we had no line of extra credit.
  13. 2 points
On the contrary, St. Mirren spent every penny of income we received that season in the SPL. We were the ONLY club in the SPL that season that spent within our means while the rest were living far outwith their means. Dunfermline for example had roughly the same income as St. Mirren that season yet their wage bill was THREE times ours. The St. Mirren BoD played the long game. Look at where St. Mirren are today and where Dunfermline are. Dunfermline got what they deserved. They are now in the Second Division while we are in the SPL for the 8th season with a major trophy in the cabinet. I say well done to the St. Mirren BoD. And by the way, I loved Tom Hendrie. 99/00 was by far my favourite season of the past 25 years.

There isn't much between the three (I think most people agree we don't want Goodwin back there), you can make a case for any of them. It's the attempt to kill the debate that's pathetic.

    Newton Loan Ending

Conor Newton will be forever be a St Mirren legend for scoring our winning goal in the league cup final but will the legend be looking at pastures new with his loan coming to an end. Putting sentiments aside would we lesser side without him? Who would fill the void in the midfield from our current squad? Are we better using the wage contribution for another area of the side where we have less competition if so where? Should we do all in our power to persuade Newcastle and the player to extend the loan? Thoughts?

    Garry Kenneth Free Agent

I see Garry Kenneth is currently on trial with Ross County. I know the big man is not a world beater but if he could recapture some of the form that got him a Scotland call up he could be a decent shout for us. We need a big strong, powerful centre half. Neither mcausland or mair are that and we have been crying out for a dominant type of defender to partner mcgregor for a long time now. Thoughts?

A tradition on many Installations, but not on ours.....I am travelling down tonight at seven to go offshore tomorrow at nine. I should have went last Thursday but weather at the Foinaven has been shit. Flights are two weeks overdue now so I am thankful I had this Crimbo at home...Not expected at all. Some of us made it home, but 27 in Aberdeen ,I am glad I missed that one. A Very Merry Christmas to Everyone from Me...

Danny may well be the best manager we've had in the past 25 years , but he doesn't have much competition. Take it back another 10 years , and he wouldn't make the top 5 !

How many times are we going to have to listen to this pish? 1978 - Celtic sack Jock Stein & poach Billy McNeill from Aberdeen who then decide they want Ferguson as their manager. Ferguson wanted the move to a bigger club & behaved in an unconstructive manner. He was sacked and subsequently took us to an Industrial Tribunal which he lost - the only mistake our then BoD made was in not accepting the inevitable and getting whatever compensation we could from Aberdeen.

  33. 1 point
But that's the thing Hendrie almost kept us up, it wouldn't have taken much of an investment from the board to keep us up, they basically took the gamble that Dundee Utd wouldn't catch us. I reckon if we'd stayed up that season Hendrie would have possibly taken us to Europe, maybe won a major piece of silverware and would be managing at a higher level now, possibly the premiership. I maintain he was let down by the board that season.

St Mirren V Dundee Utd, 26Th Dec 2013

I'd agree with this. United play a 4-2-3-1, and their threat is with their four attacking players. I'd match up, play 4-2-3-1, DVZ in right mid, Grainger left mid, with both of them helping out Naismith / Kelly, Newton and McGinn in the holding roles in midfield, and McGowan further forward, in an attacking midfield role. I'd drop Goodwin and Harkins and McLean would miss out for tactical reasons. This would mean each of Utd's best players would have two players to contend with. When we have the ball, we'd need to use the wings to get at them, plenty of crosses into the box as I think United's vulnerabilities are at the back.
  38. 1 point
I reckon Gus should have went on to claim this title. Bad attitude got in the way of that though.
  39. 1 point
For this game I hope DL realises that we need to cover the wings (and I don't mean a 747). I have noticed the last few games that teams have a man wide right/left and we lack cover. Newton showed on Saturday that he drifted into centre mid and then had to back track fast to cover the guy on the wing. I am not criticising Newton here, only using it as an example as it happened on both wings. If a FB goes forward, a midfielder should drop back to cover that area. We were left badly exposed with 2 CBs, while the backs had gone forward, with no cover at all, and hence a big part of the defeat

Kello Naismith. McGregor. Cheesy. Kelly Newton. McLean Reilly Gowser. McGinn Thommo Dear Danny, Of course you don't have to play this formation or these players, it's just my preferred option, I'd still be happy if you played Mair instead of Darren or cheesy and I admit Goodwin adds bite to the midfield but he's having a wee run of poor games.I'd be more than happy to drop Reilly if Teale was fit or you saw something in training that suggests that caprice would be a better option. The only thing I really insist on is that you stop trying to put Harkins and Gowser in the same team. Harkins may still turn out to be a good signing should Gowser be unavailable in January but they can't play together. Cheers Mykey Dear Santa Three points please, I've been good all year Cheers Mykey COYS.

Rate The 2013 Summer Transfer Window

A couple of the signings haven't really panned out how many of us might have hoped and even expected. I thought Grainger was a right good capture, but did worry about the fact that he had quite openly stated that he wanted a gig dahn saaf, so wondered what was afoot there (other than the fact that English clubs weren't falling over themselves to win his signature). The Harkins signing didn't excite me, to be honest, but I did expect a bit more from him. In saying that, he couldn't be considered a complete dud, as he has scored a few goals and remains a decent enough option, albeit I wouldn't be heartbroken if he left before his contract expires. Re-signing McGowan was a fantastic piece of business, and I was chuffed to bits that he stayed. Likewise with Newton. The others were always going to be bit-part players, in all honesty. Kello was a shrewd piece of business, and I really hope we can hold onto him. Granted he makes the odd error, but he would be nowhere near Saints if he didn't. Best keeper we've had since Dibble, for me. I'd say it was who we didn't sign that was, in fact, more problematic than who we did. It was absolutely bonkers that we didn't make proper provision to bring another striker (at least) in. Bahoken was a late throw of the dice that didn't pay off, so doesn't count. All signings are a gamble, and it isn't reasonable to expect them all to pay off. 50% would be a decent and realistic return. I think Danny has fallen short of this, but await any January activity with interest.

    Centre Half Pairing

This thread is called "centre half pairing" obviously there will be a range of opinions. Just because some posters would prefer to see Mair and McGregor isn't a bad thing. Cheesy's mistakes aren't highlighted more than any other players, other players take dogs abuse on threads all year. I'm sure there is a Kenny McLean one from about January this year, writing him off as a player and questioning his attitude. Goodwin, Lennon and Teale are other examples where threads have gone above and beyond what is ever said about McAusland. But unlike the other players, any criticism of Cheesy or his performances are met with outrage from numerous posters on here. Many of whom slate other players and the manager on this site, yet for some reason posts "cheesy was poor today", or " I'd play Mair and Mcgregor on Saturday" crosses a line. Defending McAusland at all costs, turns a simple post or thread into a saga and is what I think annoys a few folk.

    Centre Half Pairing

Agreed. For some people, McAusland will never cut it. He had a stinker at the weekend (based on the highlights), but, on balance, this was more an abberation than indicative of the player. Others will get away with a hell of a lot more.

    Centre Half Pairing

The idea that "Cheesy" is some poor wee soul that everyone has it in for on here is pretty ridiculous. He's never been subjected to the kind of sustained abuse guys like McLean, Teale, Goodwin, Imrie, Harkins or even Lennon have in recent times. When McAusland makes mistakes and we have Mair sitting on the bench people are going to comment on that. His pals and fanboys are just going to have to deal with it.
