I agree with most of the comments above. Players can't be retained out of sentiment and Stubbs must let them go if he thinks they won't be good enough for the Premiership. Just hope he can find better players to replace them. Having said that, three of the guys who are leaving played a big part in our success last season, so they must go with our thanks and best wishes for their futures. When I saw them play, I felt that they all gave 100% for our club. Football is a lucrative profession only for the gifted few at the top. For most, like these guys, it's a precarious business, so I hope they enjoyed the good times of last season and I wish them all luck in finding new clubs.6 points

They won't be . At worst they'll be out on loan having someone else paying their wages , I would imagine championship clubs will be circling already !5 points -
Assuming this is true - I admire Stubbs approach. I could make a case for each to be retained but this would be based on sentiment. This is a time of fundamental change on and out of the Playing squad. Tough, direct, no nonsense Managment. As always results will show how successfull the changes are, but I like it.5 points

Hopefully everyone will feel more re-assured when we've had more new arrivals. It's going to be an exciting season one way or the other lads. Never a dull moment supporting the buds!5 points -
Mackenzie only started 14 league games last season. Eckersley started 24, ie he missed a third of the season. Between them they started 38 league games. They both have bad injury records and both are getting on a bit. We are paying 2 big wages but effectively getting the services of 1 player.5 points

I honestly wouldn't put any stock at all in the league Cup. Yes, we won it in 2013 but the dynamic of the tournament was very different then and set up to take the early stages more seriously as these rounds started when a completed squad was in place. The group stages are and should be treated as a gelling exercise. If we get through, it's a nice bonus but let's be honest, in mid July, most squads are still in that stage where they are incomplete and getting to know one another. Next Saturday is not, nor should it be a milestone to start judging. We'll be a work in process right up until the real stuff starts.4 points -

It’s all very well letting guys go if you feel they’re not going to fit with your plans but any team will need experience to rely on and we’re lacking in that dept right now with only really Sammy and McGinn in that category IMO. If Stubbs is looking (as per his previous interview) at the English U23 market for loans then that won’t address that issue. The latest guy on trial is a young boy with about 30 games in 4 years with numerous clubs so I’m not sure that he’s going to add quality or experience. Can’t even say “it’s early days yet” as we kick off next week and I’m not sure we even have a team at the moment. Something just feels wrong about tearing a team of winners apart and replacing it with unproven guys from the depths of English football. Hope my concern is unwarranted.4 points -
Stubbs will be determined to get this right. A lot is riding on it personally for him in terms of his reputation and career. That is a definite positive from our perspective.4 points
-
This does make sense if Stubbs wouldn't be intending to play these guys routinely. He is affording them the option of finding clubs where they will get regular games. That seems fair to me, not simply ruthless.4 points

When you think about it , I can't see any of that four getting regular games in the top league , so he must know the direction he's heading in re players. Would expect another 8 at least coming in if we can offload the four !4 points

I disagree. This is a squad who have just romped to the Championship, we were already looking depleted through the loss of Morgan, Davis and Smith, now he's going to let four more go, as well as not offering Reilly a contract. This is not like the ten in ten out winter, where change was badly needed. We now have only three defenders if you exclude the players who have been told they can leave, and no left back. I'm usually very supportive of all our managers but there are alarm bells ringing right now.3 points -

To be fair my only surprise is Eckersley. Even if he stayed as a back up left back. Big Gaz is a good player but we really only got 2 half seasons out of him. Even Jack Ross never played McShane in the last half of the season. Ryan Flynn has given the midfield a better balance. Good steady pro tho. Stewart we never really seen a lot of him. But good luck to all 4 I'm certain good championship clubs will pick them up. And never forget these guys are Saints legends for what they've done in the last 18 months. So if they ever play against us give them a good reception. COYS.3 points -

A friend of mine of many years, has a season ticket for himself & 2 kids for Firhill. Following renewal (Yes, we know they got relegated!) - They received a call from Chris Erskine (Capt) & another player to thank them for their support! I thought that was brilliant & a good display of keeping fans on board. (Made a kids day I would expect) Should other clubs (Ours??) try a similar approach?2 points -

Echo that from what i have heard in the Scottish football scouting/managerial community Stubbs is only really looking at players down south, or those from there. And he is setting out his side pretty much like the celtic side he played in of big feckers, where even Goody was deemed too wee. when a new manager comes in he can deploy a number of strategies... stick mainly with what he inherited, if it works ok, if not blame the last guy and weed out the crap, or as Stubbs seems to be doing ship out everyone who would not get a gig in this league with any other club, and bring in the type/size of players who can play the phsyical game you want to be known for. on a wider note, this is a big test for Stubbs! His reputation took a hammerimg down south so he is going for it big time to 'Blast' his way up the premier league, to restore that rep, and hopefully do a Jack Ross and get snapped up by a much bigger english outfit.2 points -

Last July in competitive games we were beaten 1-0 by Livingston at home, and 5 - 0 by Partick away, and Partick played the last 30 minutes with 10 men. And, by St. Mirren standards, I believe we had a good season last year. RELAX!!!2 points -

This doesn't fill me with confidence. Stewart and McShane, I can understand but the other two could do a job. At the very least they should command a small fee given they both had really good seasons last year. Also surprised Kirkpatrick and other Stewart aren't included. From his staff/ player recruitment and now this, Stubbs has filled me with nothing but dread for the new season. Can see him being in the garden by Christmas.2 points -

Always thought that this was likely to happen. Not particularly surprised by the players mentioned either. He's obviously looking for younger more fitter models at CH and LB. Also a keeper to replace/challenge Samson is hardly unexpected. McShane became a bench warmer at championship level, so again not unexpected. No room for sentiment in this game I'm afraid.2 points
