When Stubbs was appointed I was, overall, ok with it, remembering we are not fecking Real Madrid. The results, so far have been disappointing, no real argument there. It's VERY early and the attempts by a few to dig about for any negative they can find is an embarrassment. Those of us who have been on the forum for a while will not be surprised, the amount of wallopers who see their "view" as more important than the success of the club. I sincerely hope Stubbs has a successful season, for the good of the club...................and to point and laugh at the people who have been so quick to hope he fails.

    Welcome Matty Willock

Fantastic signing. As I follow ManUtd, I've seen this lad play a number of times for the reserves on MUTV. Great big athletic lad who likes to carry the ball forward. He is also a threat from headers via set-pieces.

    Stubbsy Says...........Goodbye

It seems to me some people's dislike of Stubbs is just that- a dislike of Stubbs. It's the only reason I can think of that could make someone judge a manager in a new job before a ball is kicked (league), and when a much needed rebuilding job is not yet completed. Managers used to get 1 or 2 years to build a team before they got judged, now it seems it's 1 or 2 games.

I really like Alan Stubbs every time I hear him speak and then go right off him on match day. I am going to cool my jets for a bit because I genuinely believe the big guy is going to get it right.

We could win the premiership and there would still be individuals with views that they want to air, which would undermine the team/manager/club etc. Christ, even last year when we were miles ahead, people were bad mouthing the chairman, the manager and some of our players. It seems to be the way of the world nowadays.

    4 told they can leave

Div “Club has agreement with the press guys that they get first dibs at publishing information given out at any presser, which is entirely fair since that's who they are for! Publication online earlier today was just an admin error, nothing sinister. Will be published again tomorrow!” You can keep your knickers on now the MAJOR problem is averted

Are you back on board the Stubbs bus or are you waiting to see what other people say?

As someone who has been critical of Stubbs in the last fortnight, I was heartened by this afternoon's press conference, and even by Stubbs raising the issue of MacKenzie and Eckersley's absence and maintaining they both have achilllies injuries. For me it was enough to hear him say that even though he has told them they can find other clubs he would still have liked to have used them in the league cup group stages. I'll be offline for most of the next week, so if we win and there are no positive comments with me eating my words I've not gone into hiding!

The “damage” has been losing Lewis Morgan. Minus Lewis Morgan, we had a mid table Championship squad. Attempting to turn what was left into a decent Premiership side was always going to be a struggle.

    John McGinn

The club doesn't let contracts run down for promising young players. John McGinn and Kenny McLean and Lewis Morgan all signed up for a few years and in some cases extended their contracts 2 or 3 times. Jack Baird had his contract extended under Gary Teale (May 2015) and Jack Ross (May 2017, and January 2018). Kyle Magennis has extended his contract three times since breaking into the first team in October 2016, signing an extension in December 2016 and in May 2017 and again in June 2018. Jason Naismith signed two contract extensions in May and November 2013, Sean Kelly signed a 2-year extension a few months after his debut and was released when his contract expired. There comes a point where young players who are being tipped to move to bigger clubs don't want to sign further extensions when they are offered them, as a transfer fee can put medium-sized clubs off or force them to wait until the player can sign a PCA or leave for a development fee. Most of our younger players who have begun to shine after a few games in the first team have been offered improved contracts and contract extensions. One month after making his competitive debut for us John McGinn signed a new 3-year contract until the summer of 2015 when he left after his contract ran out. After two games with the first team, Kenny McLean signed a contract extension in October 2010 which kept him contracted until the summer of 2014. That summer he signed a further 2-year extension although Aberdeen signed him at the end of the January 2015 transfer window. Lewis Morgan made his debut under Tommy Craig in September 2014, and made 8 appearances that season and at the end of it signed a 2-year contract extension, and then signed a further 1-year extension when Alex Rae was manager. Stevie Mallan made his debut in November 2014 and signed a 3-year extension in January 2015.

I didn't want Stubbs as manager - what's the big deal in admitting it? It doesn't mean I don't want him to very well as Saints manager, cos that would be mental. Also doesn't mean he won't get my full backing, which he will. No big deal.

    Did we sign anyone today?

Why are some people desperately hoping that we finish bottom this season with a record low number of points? Yes it's been a shaky post season, but we don't know what is going to happen. Can't we just wait and see before destroying keyboards battering out nonsense on a forum. We might very well be crap this season but can we just calm down a bit?

I see a few folk on twitter ready for a meltdown because his wiki said he’s 5ft 8 and Stubbs has said he’s 6ft 1 or so. Turns out Stubbs is right. Folk really need to get a grip and take a look at themselves. It’s turning into a tidal wave of unnecessary negativity - waiting to pounce at any and every opp to have a go at Stubbs. Sad days.

Stubbs must have known the budget and what he had to work with before he accepted the job. Stubbs will be judged after a quarter of the season has gone. By that time he should have his his own squad and results will determine whether he is getting it right. As long as we are not rock bottom at that time which no clubs usually are should anyone be talking about replacing him IMO. As for anyone giving abuse to any of our players during a game is shocking. How anyone thinks abusing our own player during a game would make them perform better it has the opposite effect. If people feel a player is not good enough it should be discussed on forums like this or in the pub after games.

JR said we'd need more physicality in the Premiership. Dare I say it, I think Willock would be his kind of signing. On top of that, a good sign that we've seemingly persuaded him to come to us rather than return to St Johnstone.

Yah to be fair in that picture he does look like he's added some bulk to his frame; I didn't see him play since he wasn't with United's U23s much last season, and he's obviously improved his physique a bit. I remember he has good technique and likes to go forward, but was very 'leggy' when he was playing for the 18s, ran with the ball a lot and had a good shot on him, but I don't remember him being a particularly powerful player. And I didn't mean to say all of that initial post to suggest he's a bad signing or not a good player, I think he'll be fine should handle the level of play in the SPL, especially after his experience at St. Johnstone.

I think what is very noticable is the difference in his demeanor compaired to his interviews after a game with Jimbo With Jimbo he is frustrated and looks like he doesnt want to talk ( fair enough) When in a more relaxed situation and the lead up to a game he does come across more upbeat

Midfield is probably our strongest area. We obviously need a striker but also at least two defenders, we currently have only five and four of them are youngsters!

I thought they also got a wad of cash for McArthur? However if you weren't meaning 2009 to be recent times then I would look at the guy Hamilton sold to West ham (?), the youngster Falkirk sold to a championship club both of whom were very inexperienced and the aforementioned United who sold their talent to celtic. Gallagher from Falkirk moved for £200k, but you might be right on Hendrie. Newspaper reports say £1m. Think McArthur went for under £1m too. problem is that Mallan, Morgan and McAllister had pretty much only played in the Scottish Championship and therefore are judged accordingly. Mallan moved to English Championship for £200k and it didn’t work, so how can you justify asking for a higher fee? We can bang on about transfer fees, but realistically very few non-OF move for any more than £500k. McCarthy was a large fee, but he’s went on to have a great career and he did move in 2009.

If its loans from outside of scotland you can have more. What I would say though, Newton, Dummett and Isma were three quality loan signings who contributed magnificently a few years ago.

Stubbs can be applauded for the side he put together, the style of football at Hibs, winning the Scottish Cup in his second season and having a few other cup runs as well. Can you imagine the kind of budget he had with Mark Oxley in goals, the following defenders to choose from David Gray, Paul Hanlon, Liam Fontaine, Keith Watson, Lewis Stevenson, Darren McGregor, Callum Booth and Marvin Bartley. Midfield options included Scott Robertson, Liam Craig, Frazer Fyvie, Scott Allan, Dylan McGeoch, Sam Stanton, Liam Henderson, John McGinn and Kevin Thomson. Upfront a selection from Jason Cummings, Dominique Malonga, Martin Boyle, Farid El Alagui, Islam Feruz, Anthony Stokes and James Keatings. Two seasons in a row, with that type of squad he failed to make the promotion play off final. But hey, he won more games than he lost.
