    Give Alan Stubbs A Chance

Just watched a recording of today's Match from BBC Alba. Wasn't great. But not the worst St Mirren performance that I have ever seen. Plenty worse than that , early 1970's, through the 1990's and the early 2000's. The Transfer Window is shut. We have our Squad. Let Stubbs, Rice and Jackson get on with it. Might just need one good performance to get some confidence. At least, give them a go at it till December/January.

Put them on gardening leave and put Alan McManus in charge pro temp Not for me. If GLS is going to pull the trigger get McIntyre in to try sort it out.

Losing away to Aberdeen ( second best in country last few years ) Losing to Sevco spending millions, away to a strong Hearts team - None of that is a disgrace or unexpected. The Livingston defeat however, that’s the one we should be most disappointed in. But to call for Stubbs to go after 4 League games ? Get a grip ffs! Give the team & management a chance.

let’s not sack the manger yet. We need to allow time for the players to settle in and whilst it is horrible at present it would be very unfair to punt a manager imafter fpur league games. We have to allow him a chance at least. Give him till the October international break and if it’s not working fine .

Stubbs best game so far arguably was his first game against Kilmarnock and before he had made many loan signings. In midfield that day Cammy MacPherson and Jordan Kirkpatrick both started and both played well. I don't get the impression that MacPherson or Kirkpatrick feature in Stubbs' plans. After the game he just said neither had done themselves any harm and they'd been unlucky not to be taken to La Manga for the training camp... that to me suggests that originally they were further down the pecking order than the Stewarts, McShanes, Eckersleys, MacKenzies and Hippolytes who did go to La Manga. The longer Stubbs has been around the less organised we've looked, and the more his own signings replace last year's squad the weaker we look.

We don’t know the ins and outs of the contract. We don’t know what sort of performance related clauses that could potentially trigger a parting of ways. We don’t know if there’s a probationary period involving maybe a reduced settlement fee. I don’t think we can criticise GLS too much without knowing what’s involved in the deal.

    Give Alan Stubbs A Chance

On the face of it you're right 4 games is no time to judge a team I want Stubbs to succeed as it doesn't look good sacking a guy so early and at great cost too But with Craig i knew after a couple of games he was a no no Stubbs i was willing to give benefit of the doubt right up to Fri night But he failed to address two areas of his squad that needed strengthening Yesterday no surprise game finished after 30 mins for the 4th game in a row Would a new manager get anymore of this squad assembled Jack Ross couldn't do it with Alec Rae squad and things only improved once he got his own men So do we stick with Stubbs (On my knees here) and pray for things pick up until X-mas as nothing will change with the squad anyway Or get a new man in remember Stubbs replacement at Rotherham lasted 5 games as he could do nothing with the squad he left Decisions which would have been easier if he wasn't on a 3 year deal Could we also cut out the crap aimed at Stubbs Nice man shouldn't be subjected to abuse because he's struggling at his job

Nonsense ! Can you imagine Fergie saying to his players after we won promotion , "It's Celtic lads , they're not our realistic competitors , so if we lose WGAF " Nope , he just sent us out , you know , the team with about 3 players with top league experience , to beat Celtic at Parkhead twice in the same season ! Realistic competitors ? Don't talk shite !

You can say all you like that the obsession with performances is bollocks but the fact is that all four matches since the Dundee game have been dead and buried within about 35 minutes. Regardless of the quality of opposition, that should not be happening every week. We've only benefitted from escaping with a shred of respectability because teams are talking their foot off our throat at half time as the job is done. We're a lame duck and incredibly unbalanced. The manager looks lost and bewildered already.

Cammy is a fantastic player but maybe everyone is jumping to conclusions saying he’s not wanted and is available for transfer. Stubbs telling him if you’re not happy with being dropped or not happy playing for me then you’re free to find another club doesn’t mean he’s not wanted. The gaffer is quite right to tell any player this. Either you’re on board or you’re out the door. I support this 100% regardless who the player is. Maybe Jackson was telling him to put his dummy back in and go play some football as his body language his moody attitude has been really evident since last week. Last week was embarrassing from everyone wearing the stripes, it was like no single f**ks were given out on that pitch. Yesterday was much better from the players in terms of their attitude and desire to play and fight for the club. They need to remember that they are playing for us, not Stubbs or anyone else on the coaching team. Nothing less than 100% is acceptable and we’ve not been getting that so far. Yesterday was better. If the players get on board and Stubbs can somehow sort the defence out then we will start picking up points IMO. I’m not happy with what’s been on display so far but the chants of Stubs get to f**k after 4 league games were embarrassing IMO.

He must be given a chance, it’s not been good so far but sacking him after 4 league games would be crazy IMO. Hopefully he can sort out the defence as we’ve got some decent players in front of them. If I were GLS I wouldn’t be hitting the panic button just yet, I’d evaluate at the end of November and make a decision. Unless there is some sort of time period where we can get rid of him on the cheap.

the things we lacked, most obvious first Pace Fitness alertness intensity desire to cover up as we lost the ball and immediately after. We are short of team spirit. EVERY player was short of all these things, except Mullen and Flynn when they came on. Alan Stubbs strikes me as someone who is bracing himself for yet another crash, he seems to lack any intensity or authority-you need at least one of these to be a decent manager before you even consider technical knowledge. I don't think a single player has any fear of him or has been inspired to stretch themselves for their gaffer. There is hope for a few players, Coulson could do with a few months of extra gym and sprint sessions and he might promise something after that. A more composed Willock could impose himself on a game and Hodson will be an asset once he is match fit. Jones needs to clear his head and stop looking so shell shocked, I have a feeling he might be something once he can deal with the pace of first team football and there is a leader in there. At the very least he seemed to be trying to find a way to fight his way into things even if he never quite got there. Of last year's successes, Smith, and S McGinn could do a turn if they can rediscover their mojo and also improve in all the areas listed. None of this will happen under the current management team and they need to go, but we would still be 6 players short of a competitive team. The current crop and management team would be bottom half in this year's championship. I'd bite the bullet and pay up Jackson and Stubbs now if I were in charge. I'd maybe give Rice time to try and steady the ship with McManus at his side and use the rest of the season to develop a CREDIBLE on field strategy for a quick return from the championship and a competitive return to the top flight in 2020 under an accomplished manager, 'cause that is where we are headed. I can't see us getting more than 2 further points in the remainder of the first quarter and you don't get back in the race from that position. I don't fully blame Stubbs though, we could only have attracted a better manager if we had not signalled way in advance that we would have the lowest player budget in the league and you can't blame the guy for trying.

    ROTHERHAM UNITED SUPPORTER HERE

Hi chez, I was surprised that an English Championship club even approached Stubbs. He was let off the hook at Hibs because he ended their 100+ year wait of a Scottish Cup title (Hibs were the butt of all Scottish Cup jokes until this success). Truth of the matter is while that Cup win was very welcome, he had two attempts to get Hibernian up from the Scottish Championship and he failed. The first defence to this is that it was the same time Hearts and Sevco 2012 were in there. However, Hearts blew away that league in style in the first season, finishing 21 points clear of Hibs in 2nd. Hibs should have been looking to fight a good battle with what was a young Hearts team recovering from financial difficulty. The next season seen Sevco 2012 take the title, but Hibs had the playoffs at their mercy. They were defeated by Falkirk though. One of Scotland's 5 biggest clubs would need a third attempt at exiting the second tier. This is why I couldn't believe an English Championship side thought he was a good option. The Hibs form alone had me worried about hiring him, never mind the Rotherham form. This was always going to be a tough season. Lewis Morgan was heading to Celtic (they signed him in Jan but on the condition we would get him back on loan immediately). Harry Davis at CB stated personal reasons for returning to England. Our top scorer Gavin Reilly was fannying about with the contract offer. But the one thing our previous man in charge had done was begin the clearout needed to make space for new additions, while the players who remained shared special memories of last season and had unity between them. Our signings have consisted of English non-league players, loanees. some of whom have never played a first team game, and others who are not an improvement on what we already had. Not one signing stands out as a player that makes you go "Wow, what a good signing". The closest to that is a young LB on loan from Middlesbrough, but with it being his first slice of proper action, he does get left exposed defensively, and has no one else in defence who can guide him with their experience. I would love to see him cast these concerns aside and prove that my worries were unnecessary. But when you go four games running where it's over before the half time whistle, faith can fade fast. And now the transfer window is shut, you know we are stuck with this squad. It's hard to believe we celebrated a title four months ago.

I do see and feel your sense of frustration at Alan Stubbs. Us at Rotherham were upset by his appointment as we wanted an experienced manager (we turned down Gary Bowyer, Steve Mclaren and Tony Mowbray). He brought in players who were substandard and the chairman even said he was worried about the new signings. He let both Leon Best and Matt Derbyshire go and took an eternity to bring in the ageing Dexter Blackstock. On a THREE year contract that the chairman had to pay up. He had no connection with the fans. He always sat on the bench during the game and let assistant John Doolan do the talking. There was a huge cheer when he decided to do some managing from the sides. He said after his last game that the players are told the same things and dont listen so he is either confusing them or they dont want to know. We paid him off after 5 months around 350 k and Doolan went too. The team was that bad that next manager Kenny Jacket walked after 5 games. So yes he is not management or a people person.

Can you imagine. Sacking a manager after four league games. One of which we won, and two of which were at Tynecastle and Ibrox. Indeed the only surprising result was losing at home to Livi, who are clearly quite good and beat Hibs today. We also qualified from the league cup group stage for the first time. I don’t know if Stubbs will be any good or not. To sack him now would be nothing short of bat shit crazy though. If we are 11th or 12th at Christmas he should go. Until then, give him time. The level of vitriol directed at him is utterly bizarre.

Regarding the back four, Baird was consistently good when paired with Davis and to a lesser extent Mackenzie. Both players coached, interacted and talked Baird through the game and immensely helped his confidence and play. This year he appears the best on show and is suffering from that lack of leadership. As others have pointed out the recruitment defensively has been Stubbs biggest problem and his immediate challenge to address though coaching

It's a general drop in standards up here which has caused the chasm between Celtic and the rest. In terms of comparison , the Celtic team of today are shite , when compared to the Celtic team we defeated regularly back then . In the 70s we were in a spell where Scottish clubs won European tournaments , now , in the main , they struggle to even qualify for them. The money Celtic (and Rangers) make through their dim-witted support remains the only reason they have an advantage over the rest. The point I was really trying to make was that the poster concerned was labelling Aberdeen , Hearts etc in the same band ie teams we can't measure ourselves against. We beat Hearts in a cup final 5 years ago ffs , but now we're supposed to write games off v them as unwinnable , come on !

Got to respectfully disagree Ricky with the poisoned chalice term, these boys just won a league, some intelligent early to mid window signings to augment the winning team would have clearly been better than what we have now. Obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing but we are in big trouble here and the teams will be queuing up to give us a pasting. I unfortunately don’t have the answers but if we carry on like this we are doomed!!

The sooner we get rid, the more chance his replacement will have to arrest the decline. It is the new man who needs a chance. Stubbs has had his, and blown it. As I posted yesterday, I have no desire to see him being subjected to increasingly vitriolic abuse from the stands as the week pass. I have even less desire to see my club on its arse any longer than it has to be.

We cannot sack a guy with a 3 year contract when we have just played Aberdeen, Rangers and Hearts away and facing Celtic next. He needs to be allowed a run of games against our realistic competitors first. Either give him until league match 11 or the end of October at the very least.

We are missing a centre half of Davis's quality and to be fair we will be very lucky to get someone as good again. Davis wasn't big but he had that Jackie Copland/Tommy Turner type of assurance and intelligence that made players around him do a bit better. All our young centre backs need this help.

As much as we can blame the manager, he is not on the pitch plus these are professional footballers that, if nothing else, should have the basics in how to defend. If they need someone else to explain how to mark a man and defend a set piece then they shouldn't be on the pitch. That's what they are paid for.

I understand that point of view but believe it’s the sort of “wee team” mentality that will send us right back down. Every team in the league is a realistic competitor. We’ve all watched enough football over the years to know that when you start looking at games in this manner (i.e. we’ll lose that game but should pick up something there) you end up with egg on your face. John Wooden used to say that the team with the best players almost always wins. Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Hearts all have immeasurably better squads than us and will finish higher up the league than us but that doesn’t mean we can’t give them the occasional bloody nose and it certainly doesn’t mean we should get turned over inside 20mins each time we play them home or away. Livi, probably with a smaller budget than us have lost 3-1 at Celtic, drawn with Killie and beaten ourselves and Hibs. Why can they achieve that and we’ve got to suffer the sort of gutless performances we’ve seen thus far? Maybe nobody sent them the the script?

Once again, I refer back. Had we started the season competitively, holding our own against teams like Aberdeen and Rangers but going down at least with a bit of fight and dig, I'd have left yesterday well alone. I've seen us get enough unexpected results down the years (both positive and negative) to know that we're not a good coupon team and are volatile to say the least. However, we've been tepid so far. We've shown nothing to inspire any sort of confidence since the Dundee game....in the weeks since those performances, nothing has changed to suggest that there would be anything other than another tepid performance yesterday so it made sense to me to back that accordingly. I genuinely don't care if you or anyone else has a problem with me backing against St. Mirren as it doesn't dilute my support for the club or the team in anyway. It was a purely logical decision to do so when there were generous odds on offer. As for your second point, you've actually answered your own question. The fact that the game, once again, went to form is the exact reason for the overall meltdown and the reason that Stubbs should lose his job. That our form is now 'games lost in first half hour, it's damage limitation from here on out, boys' is frankly embarrassing. Under no circumstances should we be going 'Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen and Old Firm are all write-offs, lets see how we do with the rest' but unfortunately, that's what we seemingly ARE doing. I have also not once mentioned Sir Alex Ferguson in this or any other thread. I don't get why you are attributing his name to one of my posts. I liked a BillyG post about how he once decided not to respect teams based on reputation and that's a philosophy I'd wholeheartedly agree with but that's not a Fergie trait, that should be instilled in every manager of a club our size.

I must admit I am not nor ever have been a Stubbs fan as a manager but as already mentioned given our start Celtic Rangers and hearts in our first 5 league games with Aberdeen away thrown in for good measure in the cup he needs to be given the first quarter then it can be looked at. We need to see if it's a confidence thing or not before sacking him. The first few cup games ended up being pre-season games. Since then we've only had one result go against us that we really should have expected to win. All this obsession about performances is bollox. A defeat is a defeat. We have not gone two matches without hitting a top club away from home since the league started. The players have had their confidence shaken. Let's see what we are looking at after playing St Johstone, Hamilton, Motherwell, Killie etc. Clearly we are going to take time to settle in. People are not being reasonable at all here.
