1. Arsenic and Old Lace is the only Capra movie I really like, probably because it's so hammy!

Capra - Should've stuck to his original calling - Chemistry! :P

    Whit, Arsenic is Capra? :o

    Fine film.

He's a Chemist? He de Man

Seriously- he gave a piss for the wee man when a lot of Holywood did not. For that alone he deserves our plaudits.

In a mellow mood. Got a region one DVD of Captains Courageous recently, now there's a fillum :P

  2. 1 Shawshank Redemption - Pure Capracorn!

    2 It's a Wonderful Life - Pure Capracorn!!

3 Fight Club - Homoerotic movie for those frightened to admit these tendancies - I'm tough so I can't be gay!

4 The Matrix - Ever so bad plagiarism of William Gibson's Cyberpunk idiom.

5 Stand By Me - Pure Capracorn!!!

    ***********************************************

PS - Anyone know the link between 1 & 5?

Both short stories- and both by Stephen King who also wrote another novella which was an utterly keech fillum.

    The Running Man.

    Edit to include:

Time to make a stand, I like Capra. All film should be seen in the context of its time. Capra's films were good cinema and with a very positive social message.

It's easy to argue that "The grapes of Wrath" does that better, indeed it does. For me "Grapes" is a great film and "Mr Smith goes to Washington" is a good one.

  3. And most importantly of all- don't use Internet explorer as your browser- it has more holes than Blackburn Lancashire.

Get Firefox, it's free, and it's here.

I have never had any problems since I started using firefox. :D

AS for redoing the Windows 2000, unless you have all the system drivers and know what you're doing I would advise against it.

TBH your 126MB of memeory ain't helping here.

Sid's correct- if you can splash some cash Dell have some great deals on

    Clicky

  4. Can we agree that The Rushdie Affair was not Cat's greatest moment?

From memory, the clown was asked by a journailst if he would personally attempt to carry out the fatwa, his reply was to the effect of "no, I'd just make phone calls to a few people"

    <_<

Actually the funniest bit about the Rushdie affair was Salman, who wrote before it of Mrs Torture and her secret police running behind the skirts of the self same secret polis.

  5. That's amazing, John. That's exactly what was said about it in Uncut magazine. Shockeroonie! You sure you ain't a music journo? :o:ph34r:

    :lol::lol::lol:

Chillin' wie Miles Davis- Kind of Blue, Writing in Sid's style

"It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny."

  6. No no no Tom. Had the sentence started "Bongo and I, " then you would have been correct.

However, as the sentence was "Namely, Bongo and me", this is correct.

After all, one would be unlikely to say "namely I" would one?

I blame the erse o' the bank. :D

    You are correct- bravo!

I is used for the subject of the sentence, me as the object.

    Plainly an old Grammarian

  7. I can't comment on Irreversible- I haven't seen the film.

I would disagree about not understanding the horrific nature of rape.

But that's a matter of opinion. There have been enough dramas where the after effects are shown and explored without graphic details of the crime.

I would contend that there are some crimes whose far reaching effects are not understood. Burglary's a prime example. What may seem a small thing to the junkie who breaks into an old woman's house can totally destroy the confidence and happiness of the old woman. That type of effect is perhaps not fully appreciated.

  8. Well I remember when it was shown at the Edinburgh Film Festival and it got absolutely slated. The start of the review went something lie, “Okay, Mr. Deep & Meaningful Director, tell me your thoughts on the artistic merits of a rape scene in your film? And how about a rape scene that lasts TEN MINUTES?â€

    246004

    Ditto for violence graphically done.

Only saw clockwork orange once, same for straw dogs, both at first release. (giving my age away :o )

In both cases the director would say that they were making important points. Kubrick had, imho, the good sense to pull Clockwork Orange from release or video release.

It was, afaik only released on DVD when he died.

I seriously doubt that we need to see rape to understand the horrific nature of the crime.

  9. Is there not a really horrific rape scene in that that lasts for about ten minutes or something?

I didn't. I know that song very well, what's Childhood's End all about? (Please make your answers rational and un-sarky, thank you.)

    245532

New age hokum really- Old Arthur C wrote some dodgy stuff sadly.

The deal is that strange aliens help humanity evolve into a stage of existence which needs no longer be tied to the planet- the existence is beyond the mere corporeal.

    Precis here

The interesting bit is that the book, written in 1953, presages the story of the evolutionary leap for mankind shown at both the start and end of 2001.

  10. Is being a SF nut and having read the original novella Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? cheating?

Philip K. Dick is one of my favourite authors- The Kafka of SF!

Other Dick adaptions (Ooooh err missus) include

Next - Adaption of short story The Golden Man - in production.

A Scanner Darkly - Release Date July 2006

    Paycheck

    Minority Report

    Impostor

    Screamers

    Total Recall

    244032

Fine author indeed, though I would give the Kafka award to Samuel R Delaney.

Minority report and Total Recall show that good books can suffer poor adaptations.

Reidy : Delaney wrote a good review of 2001, found it online here.

  11. McB, I've read a stack of KF's crime books. Some of them are excellent (and a few are so-so). I've never actually heard any of his music, although I was almost tempted to go to King Tuts a couple of years ago when I discovered he was appearing in Glasgow.

    239353

Found out that he had been in King Tuts a week after he was there :(

If you wish a copy of "Sold American" - one of his best pm me with your address.

  12. Touché Turtle!

    Genesis - Suppers Ready

    232731

    Bravo

All of my Genesis stuff was replaced when I changed from vinyl to CD.

Lady McB(eth) is under orders to put me in a home if I show any sign of wanting to replace Tarkus or Pictures at an exhibition

Listening to Tom Waits- Jersey Girl

  13. Saw them at The Roundhouse. (not yesterday.... )

Was well impressed by their whole gig.

Support (!) was a guy called (I think) Duncan Brown.  Had top 20 entry with Journey...

(Great guitar and lyrics "oh what a joke these 24 years have been!")

which I really thought would break him big.

Never ever heard of again... :(

    226805

Saw them at Strathclyde Uni - '75?

btw Duncan Browne- wie an e.

Had a fair amount of stuff-

    some of it.

  14. Make your own FFS...4 egg yolks, some white wine vinegar, english mustard, salt and sunflower oil...superb and much better than Hellmans who, don't forget, shat all over the good workers of Brown and Polson's by throwing them onto the employment scrapheap.

    223894

Much improved bya wee drop of garlic.

Mix all of the ingredients ( except for the oil) in a food processor. Set the processor up to speed and slowly add the oil 'til the mixture reaches the correct consistency. Served with crudites, baguette and a cheeky wee crisp white.
