Time will tell if Muir was a loss or not. We didn’t have much choice at the time to have him as backup against the filth with Rogers being injured first time round.

In fairness that goalkeeper number isn’t bad when broken down. No one is complaining about acquiring Hladky. Sammy got his big coaching move. Rogers was the other of the original two but spent half his time injured and was gash for us. Muir had to fill the bench, Lyness was signed to Jan - basically as backup to Sammy and cover for Rogers until he returned from injury. We thought Lyness might stay after Sammy went but again, signing Hladky and letting Lyness go was a no brainer, we haven’t had a keeper like Vaclav in a long time (certainly best of my time supporting Saints). Then it’s steady, then Rogers gets injured again and we were forced into bringing in Holmes. Had Lyness’ contract run for another 2-3 weeks we’d have probably kept him for the season.

Unfortunately we have lots of deluded fans on that point. Might as well add in the fees for Kenny McLean and Ross Stewart (ST).

And the compensation for Jack Ross to Sunderland...🤐

I agree. The last good season he had was 2012 - 13 - 6 years ago. He may well peak again, but chances not high.

I think a younger upcoming unknown who finds the net plenty would be far better - Like Kambieri when Hibs got him and he scored 9 goals in his first 14 or so games...

Cannot see May scoring double figure in the Premiership in the coming season... Bookies will give anyone good odds on that I suspect.

Problem is, every club is looking for a prolific goalscorer.

As mentioned by @Dan Is The Man, he has been played out of position at Aberdeen. They play with a target man  (Cosgrove) and play two high attackers pronged off each side of him. This is not Mays position. It actually surprised me when they signed him as he wasnt the kind of player that fitted the profile, when Rooney was the main striker at the time.

Thing is though, he apparently had Greg Stewart there to bring in and plumped for Brock-Madsen before him.

Had he actually brought Stewart in and THEN punted Smith, it would have been a lot more palatable than what was being attempted.

True story. That's what I heard. Club itself were keen on Stewart and Stubbs forged ahead and brought in BM

  4. I'd imagine his agent will try and get him a gig to keep him down south. Teams in league one at very least will have seen what he offers off the back of loans at Peterborough and Luton. Coming back up the road would be seen as failure with most of the bigger clubs filling their forward line already, there wouldn't be many teams that would be able to afford his demands and fit him into their wage budget.

Though if reports are true and St Johnstone ARE interested, surely we could compete with them.

Wow does anyone on here know what a players wages are that plays in Denmark ???

We took Dreyer on loan from an English Prem club I would be pretty surprised if Safranko was on more than a player from the EPL even a squad man !

I think his clubs preferred option is to sell him or the club loaning him pays a sizeable contribution towards his wages.

Say hes on 4k a week, they may want us to pay 75% of that.

If we need money to find 5 new players then there is major problems. Surely we have cash to get players considering we have hardly anyone signed and the ones we do have are clearly very poor . I would have thought that if he is happy then let’s build our team around him let’s show some ambition and hope that we can have a good season. This is our chance to be better than a relegation candidate and keeping our best player is crucial. If we sell him then it speaks volumes about the situation we are in.

I dont think that is the issue. To me it seems we are going for a better quality of player rather than squad fillers. These ones arent as easy to get over the line compared to non-league players we brought in last season.

As I said elsewhere I got the worries when Dean Lyness re-signed. Remember he declined an offer from us to sign for League 1 Raith Rovers last year because he wanted first team football Yet he's back. So he must think he's going to be number 1 very soon

He never declined an offer from what i believe. We had Rodgers and Hladky on our books. Due to the terms of Rodgers loan deal, we couldnt send him back even when he was injured. I have a feeling there was a word in his ear saying if you keep yourself fit at Raith, the doors open end of season when we get a couple of players off the books.

I’m just struggling to understand the criticism of Gus when his first and only full window was a success.

Does other clubs signing quicker mean they’ve managed to recruit well? Seem to remember Dundee and St Mirren both being pretty snappy last summer.

My whole point is the impatience in our supporters, that have this summer recruitment written off before we see who most of the new signings will be. It boggles the mind.

Should point out I am not making excuses for the league cup, that’s inexcusable even for this squad and they personally need to shoulder the blame along with the coaches but these things happen, it doesn’t need to define our season.

People wanting to place blame on recruitment right now need to ask themselves though. Is it a question of blame?

The players in question, I am sure must be worth the wait if the club are sticking by their targets. Quality over quantity.

I know it has been said that the gap left between departing manager and new manager, has probably set us back 2 weeks in preparation, if not longer if you consider a different style of play etc. It is not an ideal scenario, though that would explain the time we are waiting to get said players over the line.

  9. We are no better off than our position last summer and the season starts next week. We are not 1 or two players short which would be acceptable, we are at the very least, half a squad short. Embarrassing we have not been able to solve the left-back position for one. We have had since last summer to find a long term replacement when Ecks was told he could leave, regardless of Muzeks short stay inbetween. We are absolutely ruining the development of Erhahon played out of position. 100% clear to all that he cannot operate at left back. It seems like the club will still use him as a back up left back if we get one in.

If anything changes this week then great, though in my mind, surely we had two lists drawn up of targets (one for premier, the other for championship).

We don’t need a director of football. We need cash to persuade quality players to sign for us. Get rid of Gus and use the money from his wage and plane tickets/accommodation in Spain etc to bring in players like Popescu and the Dutch striker who both seemed to be bemused with what we could offer them.

Popescu was on the verge of a loan move. His club moved the goalposts with the terms and contribution.

  11. I have never understood why we have never explored the USA player market. I'm not sure how the Andy Dorman deal came around though was one of the most effective signings in the last 25 years easily.

I watch the MLS and although the standard isn't brilliant, there are some very good players there. The whole academy systems also have some players I am sure that can be unearthed. I always thought if possible it would be great to have some linkup with a club or youth academy over there in some capacity.

    What efforts?

For years we have been weak in this area, resulting in us chasing the easy short term cash of us displacing our own season ticket holders and reducing season ticket income to pander to the old firm to our long term detriment.

Hospitality... Previously classy... Now done on the cheap. Meal poorer. Even the complimentary pen has gone from classy to no more than a bic!

Hospitality places regularly given away to make it look busy!

Annual dinner. Hospitality. Golf do. Same old same old.

Within our fanbase, we are bound to have radio presenters... Comedians... Personalities who could present the hospitality day, releasing Campbell to network... Mingle with the guests. But no. It's his baby.

How many funerals do we host?
A major source of income for the fakes... With Woodside just up the road why isn't it one of ours?

How many networking business open days have we hosted?

Getting business owners together to network and support one another whilst promoting our own facilities?

How have we encouraged increased season ticket sales?

What have we done to increase youth support? You know... The kids we kick out for old firm games?

    "Exhausted it's efforts"?

    Don't make me laugh.

Actually, I can't. It is criminal neglect and makes me weep.

So many opportunities... Lost because of our small minded short term approach to income... Spunked on pay offs!

The board to be fair have only been in charge for 3 years. Some may say that's plenty of time to out things into action, others differently.

I believe the club ARE exploring new ways of generating new income, it's just all cannot be a big reveal to the public until these things are in place. That's just my opinion though.

Hospitality isn't something I've done a lot of, though I haven't had any complaints with what you get for your money. Still one of the lowest costs in the league. I am sure if there is any question over standards, the club are probably doing their best to keep everything within budget without charging fans a huge increase due to now playing back in the top league.

Campbell and Tommy do a magnificent job for the resources at the club they have. A lot of clubs have a bigger backroom team behind them, though we are currently operating with very few people behind the scenes.

No ideas on funerals, though it is advertised in the commercial brochure and on the website. Would be interesting to see how the fakes generate interest from this.

To be fair, business club has been re-launched and has been going for the last 3-4 months. There are so many networking events out there. Once this one starts to gain exposure it will be one of the most popular ones in the area. I have already brought along a number of business owners who have since returned.

Agree on the youth side of things. I'm not sure how the club approaches this currently. When I was younger they used to dish out free tickets to schools. Could be some incentive attached to the free tickets for parents. Did you enjoy your free matchday experience? Why not sign up for an adult season ticket and get X amount of kids free season tickets Included.

By the sound of things,  it looks like 5 will be the most. In his interview,  he said 4 or 5 again.  Worrying.

This time last season will still be fresh in the boards mind from the cluster f**k of bad signings we made. We are trimming the squad this year though looking to spend on better quality. 5 would still take us close to the numbers we tried to bring the squad down to in January. Still think if we move one or two on, that will free up space for a couple more.

I don't believe we are skint, just trying to be shrewd, however frustrating the length of time it is taking to get more bodies in.

Because there was already some discontent about the arrangement. A wee bit of PR to placate it isn't really much of a stretch to believe.

I think when the accounts come out and we see the size of the wage bill it'll be plain as day that the 3 games worth of gate from the family stand could be nowhere near 10%

Payoffs and an oversized squad as well as the extra couple of players in January.

Tansey is owed a years wages.

Heaton is owed two years wages.

Kearney was owed two years wages.

it doesnt take a genius to work out that Goody will be likely working with the lowest budget in the league, and probably lower than some in the championship too! I bet managing Alloa will seem like those long, long summers we used to have, to JG now!

This is all just pure speculation.

Nowhere whatsoever does it say anywhere that Tansey is surplus to requirements and been told to move on.

Heaton is not owed two years wages. As far as I am aware, we have told him he is free to find another club. I also believe (could be wrong), the transfer fee of £75k was not paid in full and was broken down into installments/milestones depending on certain criteria.

Kearney is not owed 2 years wages.

Yeah, something isn’t adding up here. You’d think a game likes Wednesday would be a good opportunity to get 20 mins or so under his belt.

He has had such a massive set back with his fitness, maybe the club/coaches didn't want to risk him incase he broke down again regardless if it is 20mins or not. .

Yeah my first thoughts when I saw those clips was "fair play, he's putting in extra work to get match fit"

Then noticed he had said he was already fit to play, now saying it's not his decision to be training alone. He seems a fairly quiet guy that just gets on with things so can't imagine its a fall out - maybe we just don't fancy him over some of the other centre mids at the club. Bit shite not letting the guy train with the squad though

Possibly the difference in intensity of training sessions. Goody will have the players in on tough training session and maybe its something that is too strenuous for the stage Tansey is at?

How much roughly, as was going to get the wee fellas done.

A few buds wondering now if Qarabag ever put an offer in, based on the fact they couldnt register Hladky for European football at present?

was it jus a ruse by Scott because the club needs the funds after paying Oran off? Ouch... no wonder he is breaching confidentiality agreements, thats gonna smart!

I don't think the club are forcibly trying to start a bidding war by making up offer/  We want to keep him at the club. If anything, mentioning other clubs are interested is certainly a way of forcing the bidding teams hand to up their offer.

Did Oran get a pay off though? You seem to be in the know.

Another season, another reason for supporting St Mirren to paraphrase an old song. What a start - 2nd close season in a row we lose a winning manager who was popular with the fans. This time however we bring back the Club Ledgend that is Jim Goodwin. So how will we do in cups and in the league?

League Cup - I predict we will top our group.

League - I predict we will be 8th.

Cup - I predict that we make it through two rounds.

Are you any more hopeful or are you more fearfull.

PS. Forgive me please for posting about St Mirren and Football on the Forum.

    Fair assessment Ricky
