  1. Great article, we really are reaping the benefits of our fantastic new facility at Ralston now. 5 of our first choice 11 from last year were graduates, and that's looking like it may increase next term.

It has been rated independently as the third best facility in the country, behind only the Old Firm. What a great accolade that is for a club like ours.

Congratulations to all involved, Davie Longwell and our BoD in particular.

  2. Stevenson is a decent player and I'd be happy to see him sign. I don't rate Craig at all.

But the suggestion that either represent a step up from Newton or particularly McClean is ridiculous IMO.

Ask St Johnstone fans about Liam Craig. They all rate him very highly.

Who would you like us to sign?

  3. Yeah good luck to him, he's a nice lad and I'd jump at a contract like that if it was me.

I suspect McCoist has gave him this contract purely based on his performances in his first season with us, when he had a couple of good games against them and scored at Ibrox IIRC. That and a cursory glance of his wiki to check he's played since.

I'd guess that's as far as scouting goes at the New club. I can see no other explanation for them signing him. We can and will do better.

  4. Kello

    Naismith-Cheesy-Williams-Kelly

    Goodwin-Hughes

    Teale-McGinn-Wylde

    Thompson

That's just the players who've got a deal for next season. There's a solid back bone there, our young defenders are one year wiser and I really like the look of Mark Williams. I think he could complete a back 4 solely comprised of products of our own youth system next season.

The point is, don't panic. We need signings but there's other teams around us who are in a worse position than us.

  5. I didn't think he'd play for us again.

A nominal fee might not even apply in this case regardless of contract.

    It's a case of free a wage.

Dundee have bid £100k for Danny Wilson so you would think Harkins is worth a fee of sorts ?

We'll just be delighted to get him off the wage bill.

He's on big money, so him leaving frees up a good wage. Hopefully we will use it on someone who isn't a disinterested waster like Harkins this time.

  6. I understand both sets of views here but I think the point that Big Yards is trying to make is that we have been living with in our means since the new stadium was built and the dept was cleared, yet the quality and depth of the squad has gradually decreased since season 11/12, presumably to save money. why has this continued to happen with further reductions and continually going for the cheap option by promoting youngsters and cutting the coaching bill by promoting TM,JG and GT despite an increase in revenue through player sales etc.

We have already proved that we can live with in our means with a squad with decent depth and a handful of experienced players and quality youngsters in past seasons, so why must we leave Tommy to build a squad on pennies working with out of depth academy graduates, situations where we have only one player per position ie left back, and a solitary ageing striker.

I really Hope the BOD proves me wrong this season.

You really think our wage bill has decreased? I don't, certainly not by much.

Last October we had the following senior pros in the squad, all of whom who were given contracts after proving themselves at this level, all of whom would have been on very decent money.

    Mair

    Harkins

    Goodwin

    Thompson

    Teale

    Kello

    McGowan

    Grainger

In Gus's final season did we have as many proven top flight performers on top flight contracts as that?

  7. this fight will be a grudge match , they hate each other and groves should win froch ur time is up. I watched it last time for free im not paying sky for that no chance. The first fight the two of them really had a go and the fight shouldn't have been stopped groves was getting there.

I don't think they do hate each other. It's been a staged and choreographed build up between the two, they've done a good job of convincing people they hate each other and thus selling the fight.

I think Groves wins tonight, and sets up another winner takes all rematch between the two next year.

  8. Adam Campbell had one good game for us really, and it was against Stevenson at Easter Road.

The wee man absolutely ripped him to shreds, then done nothing else in his time here. Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

  9. The fact that we will sign a load of crap players mark my words and the fact that were SHITE every season other than that im basing it on nothing

We will finish above Dundee for the 10th campaign on the spin, mark my words. Not bad for a team who's shite every season hm?

Indeed now we have got rid of huge manager who was holding us back (IMO) I believe we will kick on and finish in the top 6.

  10. One of them has a £37 million release clause in his contract. That's the level they're at.

Yeah exactly. These are top players who will play at the very top level. Our guys are a good bit below them, not just McLean and McGinn, but May and the rest of the U21 squad too.

Just shows you the difference between the two countries. I wonder why Scotland can't produce players like Holland can anymore?

  11. I never ever thought Paul Lambert would go on to win a Champions League winners medal with Dortmund.

I never thought that Stevie Clarke and Peter Weir an would go on to win a European Cup Winners Cup with Chelsea and Aberdeen.

Dougie Bell also played a massive part in Aberdeens route to the final - sadly injury prevented him from playing. Although he and Weir won the Super Cup beating Hamburg over two legs.

Good article on Dougie Bell. http://www.afc.co.uk/articles/20120604/the-fps-club-_2212158_2797102

Sadly I never got to see Archie Gemmill play for Saints - but he too played a massive part in the Forest team that won the European Cup with Forest.

But for a wee diddy team from Paisley - there have been a few local lads (yes I know Clarke is from Salcoats, but he is an adopted Buddie) who made it all the way to the top of the game in European competition.

ETA - I never ever thought I'd see Nigel Hasselbaink win the Scottish Cup with St Johnstone.

St Johnstone winning a major honour in anyones lifetime is an amazing feat.

    Armageddon my arse Doncaster.

I never seen any of the players you name playing for St Mirren, so I don't know what kind of potential they had, but back then the top teams in England were full of Scots. Look at the Forrest and Liverpool teams that conquered Europe in the 80's, both had large contingents of Scottish players.

Sadly, for whatever reason, those days are now gone. Indeed the last Scot to play in a UCL final was Lambert, 17 years ago! The only top class player to come out of this country in the 21st is Fletcher, and he left Scotland at 14.

This is not a slight on McGinn or McLean, they are without doubt two of the top young Scottish midfielders anywhere. The point is there's a clear difference between a top Scottish player and a top European player.

You think it's realistic that either McGinn or McLean will be running out for a Chelsea or a Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League any time soon? Sorry, I don't. It's pretty probable that Quincy Promes will be though, he's the guy who scored a hat trick the other night.

There's nothing wrong with being a solid Championship level player in England, you can make a lot of money in that league. I think and hope that's where both of them end up, and I think both will go on to represent Scotland at senior level.
