Look at the players in that photo and compare to todays squad !. How many do you think they would take off todays team. Even if there were only the 7 on display (Alan Logan sneaking in ?) playing, I reckon they would still win with no keeper !

Didn't include their fans, maybe 5% of them are ok. Not the one's on Monday morning asking "How did your team get on at the weekend"

Not really following this post. Are you saying Morgan wasn’t our best player last year? Of course he didn’t literally win the league himself. Had he not been playing for us I don’t think we would have won the league. I wouldn’t say that about any of the rest of our squad.

The majority of Reilly’s goals came in the cups. He was largely hopeless in the league and it was no surprised he was dropped toward the end of the season. He scored one league goal after the 6th of January, and that was at the end of the 5-0 game against Dumbarton. Vital to the title win?

If Reilly and Smith were as important to the league win as Morgan, why didn’t Celtic or other higher level clubs try sign them too? They’re of similar ages. The answer is a simple one; they’re not as good as Lewis is.

McGinn and McLean are only now playing at the level S McGinn played at successfully for many years? That’s just patently false. He had 38 appearances in the championship over a season and a half at Watford before he was dropped and ended up in League 1. Right before he came to us he wasn’t getting a game with League 2 Wycombe Wanderers. Let’s not pretend his career in England was something it wasn’t.

Mallan has 15 more career goals than S McGinn already. Despite being 7 years younger and playing almost 200 less games. McLean has 29 more goals. He comes up short however you measure him against our previous central midfielders.

Not only is he not as technically good or as much of a goal threat as any of them, he’s not even a strong leader/enforcer like Goodwin or Murray was. Was he giving 110% when he strolled around in a huff against Livi? The only time he looked interested in that match was when he sprinted to high five the subbed on Cammy Smith.

If we did drop him for the Hibs game, would it get much worse than being pumped 3-0 by Hamilton Accies? How?

Whats it come to when a club like Hamilton Accies are charging £12 for kids to watch what for me is utter junk  full of second rate players and journeymen at the end of their careers.
No wonder parents and children are finding other things to do with their Saturday afternoons.

To add to this, the contempt for youth development is a myth.
Our current club captain was given his debut and a regular first team slot under Gus Macpherson! Charlie Adam, a teenager when at St. Mirren, gave him a glowing reference in a recent tweet.
And as you mention, he was mainly working with young players at Queens Park. I remember the day there was a near meltdown on this forum the week after he gave Sean Burns his debut because he wasn't in the squad. Interesting to note that he played over 200 times for Gus at Queens Park. Obviously Sean didn't have a problem with him!
With regards to success at Queens Park, he got them promoted to League One and challenged for promotion to the Championship in the following season, something not seen at Queens Park for a generation! He achieved this with young players. Yes, they subsequently got relegated. But this is expected at a club whose players are all amateurs and where the best players leave every summer to joining the professional ranks.

No issue with Gus McPherson coming back to the club in Technical Director. I think its a good move and will work.
Explains to me why McIntyre wasn't considered second time round for the job. I suspect GLS wanted McPherson back at the club and linking up with Kearney was the way to achive it.
I suspect GLS also see's it as a bit of an insurance policy should Kearney not work.

Reflecting a bit more on this, and in the wake of the Stubbs clusterf**k, I can just about see the value of having someone who has broad oversight of club affairs on a consistent basis, and can report back any issues as and when they arise. Certainly before things go sour to the extent they did under the previous management set-up.
I would have assumed that is one of the roles of the CEO, but perhaps he (Tony) has other responsibilities that mean it is difficult to be constantly tuned in to general day-to-day affairs at the club.
Gus is a level headed guy, and is actually a pretty decent human being when you talk to him. He just might be suited to this oversight type of role, and possibly fancies a new challenge without having to be under the spotlight as a team manager is in this division.
Perhaps it is time to get back to supporting our club without feeling the need to question and scrutinise every decision that is made by the people who are charged with this responsibility. It is easy to throw your tuppence worth in from the sidelines, but not always particularly constructive.

We played with more freedom in the first half. As the game wore on we suddenly had something to lose and decided to play it safe.

Even with 10 men they are a class above anything else we’ll play this season.

A great result for us. No doubt about it.

Every player ran themselves into the ground for the team tonight. What a joy to see that happen again.

No argument from me on this Lenzie,  except maybe the tremendous bit, would go as far as Good given the tools he had to work with, but watching his team was a cure for insomnia.  everyone`s entitled to there own opinions mate, and you could be right, as anyone who could take a team to a national final with John Potter at the heart of its defence is either very lucky or a Genius

Gus was correct about Adam when he was with us. He was dumped out of Ibrox because of his fitness and attitude. Probably Gus and Andy Millen that shaped Adam up and got him back on track. Listen to the players appreciation of his time with Gus that will tell you all you need to know.
Gus McPherson did a tremendous job with St Mirren and would be a quality addition to the club. Would also be a huge help to Kearney. I'd take him over Jimmy Nichol all day long.

The end product of Gus' tenure was that we had gone from a crap Championship side to our 5th straight season in the SPL. Alongside that our first League Cup final since the 50s, and a first Scottish Cup semi since 1987.
He definitely left us in a better place than when he joined. That requires a decent manager.

Brilliant move for Gus McPherson, perfect for the role and a good move by the club. Will be a huge help to Kearney and whoever follows Kearney in time.  Club for me now seems to be going in the right direction since JR left

I think it's a good move. His experience and his eye for a decent player will be a great help to OK and the club. Can't do worse in recruitment than we've had with Stubbs. Welcome back Gus.
