  1. Well looks like no-one has sussed PICTURE 74. Will keep it open .... Since PICTURE 74 was so hard for you I have made this one easy.... PICTURE 75 CLUE
  2. PICTURE 73 was correctly spotted by Lethal89. This building is the Middle Church and is half way up Church Hill. Built between 1779 and 1781 and designed by Samuel Henning. A Listed. After the congregation amalgamated with that of Canal Church to form Castelhead Church in 1975, the Middle Church was converted into flats in 2001. PICTURE 74 CLUE is the first image.
  3. My apologies Well St Bud. Sid aint as good as I thought he was.
  4. My 'Like' Eddy was for the Google Reference as that is where insaintee does most of his 'research' Sid is the man. Again. PICTURE 72 is the Ferguslie Bell now located in the garden between the Sma Shot Cottages (did you know there were several cottages there?). The bell originally rang for shift changes at the old Ferguslie Mills which was handy for many workers who lived nearby but thats another story. It was moved to the Sma Shot Cottages after the Mill was demolished. I have also attached some internal shots of the Sma Shot Cottages. Worth a visit. Note Shull's place in a couple of the images The 7th image is the PICTURE 73 CLUE.
  5. Me too Sid, I walked past them on my way to Brodie Park many a time and always thought they looked so 'international' compared to all the red and white sandstone we see in Paisley.
  6. You drove me to it insaintee. I thought the red and white stripes would be difficult but not for you lot on here. Have to start making them harder!
  7. Was waiting for the low-down from Sid on PICTURE 71 as it is close to his heart PICTURE 71 is the former Brown & Polson Workers' Institute On Falside Rd. Now private accommodation. Built in 1909 and B Listed. Not the usual Paisley architecture. I was only in this building once for a 21st or something many years. ago. Felt I had stepped back in time. Great old building. PICTURE 72 CLUE is fourth image.
  8. That's only because you have a love affair with that road and all the buildings on it
  9. Did you take a stroll along Glasgow Rd to find out or Google it?
  10. PICTURE 70, for the benefit of Qarsaan, is the statue of John Witherspoon outside Paisley Tech (or UWS to our younger viewers). Who he you may ask? More info here..... http://en.wikipedia....ohn_Witherspoon An important man as far as America is concerned but he wasn't a Buddie as some may believe and only stayed in the town for 10 years as Minister of the Laigh Kirk (already featured). One of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence. PICTURE 71 is the hardest CLUE yet as you are all too good at working out the featured relics of Paisley. PS Sorry this wasn't posted earlier but I am very busy these days and I am spending too much time on P&B laughing at Rangers. Sorry
  11. No need....just follow this thread and you will learn a lot more. I know I have . (And insaintee, stop promoting google for those that are trying to work out the shots - let them use their memory or walk the streets - its healthier for them!!!)
  12. I am aware of that site FS and the great photos in it. At some point I was going to cover the old mansions but there are enough buildings and places still not covered yet so thanks for pointing others in that direction (except Sid). PICTURE 69 is 85 Maxwellton Rd and as has been said is the former residence of James Coats who founded the Ferguslie Mills. This house precedes more elaborate but since demolished later houses (bloody Council!!!) of the Coats family that will still be covered later in this thread. This building was built in 1820 and is B Listed. If anyone wants to own a piece of history then it can be purchased here .... http://www.slaterhog...000-ref-637857/ CLUE for PICTURE 70 is second image ..... PS I went to visit the Sma Shot Cottages before Saturday's friendly and was very impressed. Worth a wee visit. Free entry with a good (and cheap) wee tea-room. Open Wednesdays and Saturdays. I'll post some internal shots in the next day or two.
  13. PICTURE 68 is the former Oldfield's Machine Tool Warehouse in Abercorn St. C Listed and built in 1924. Nice to see that it is now Council Offices and private housing - the way to go! Was only in it once to buy some long machine bolts. Got very confused when I was offered about 1000 options! I was obviously not a pro. I have tried to make the next one easier for you than I was going to .... PICTURE 69 CLUE is second image.
  14. My apologies lethal89 - was still half asleep this morning
  15. No boobs Lethal89. This building has not been featured before....(I do keep a list, just in case )
  16. PICTURE 67 is indeed the Sma Shot Cottages in Shuttle St. Not designed by TG . Built between 1735 and 1750. Cant find a Listing for it but would be amazed if it isnt Listed. More info here http://www.smashot.co.uk/history.php Not been in them yet but maybe take care of that tomorrow before the Caly game. PICTURE 68 CLUE is the second image. If you recognise it maybe a wee subtle clue is preferable than stating what it is - helps keep the suspension going for the non-geeks .
  17. On an election day maybe its appropriate that PICTURE 66 is the Paisley Conservative Club in New St., or at least it was. B Listed. Built as a house in 1800 and became the Conservative Club in 1883. Alterations in 1920 by the great TG. Like some others I loved these windows as a kid and wondered how you could get curved windows and what a job that would be for the glazier and joiner in fitting them. (Strange thoughts for a kid ). Dont know when it stopped being the Conservative Club but could imagine it as full of leather seats, cigars and whisky. Paisley Uni used at least a part of it at one point. Dont know much about its current use. PICTURE 67 CLUE is the second image.
  18. PICTURE 65 is The Hayweighs building. Built as a public house with flats above it. Grade B Listed. 1900 Free Renaissance style. Architect was James Donald. This is a good example of many tenements in Paisley that are B Listed and of fine construction and detail that are constantly overlooked or taken for granted. I have never been in the Hayweighs and now wish I had seen the inside of it. If it re-opens I would be one of the first in the queue (and its possibly the closest pub to Greenhill Rd?) The CLUE for PICTURE 66 is an easy one for you.
  19. PICTURE 64 was correctly identified by Insaintee as the Stock St Public Baths. Designed (again) by the great TG it was built in 1898 and the only Baths Building left in Paisley. More recently most of you may know it as Monty's Snooker Hall. Its time as a Baths appears to have been brief. It was built as an extension to the Gleniffer Laundry and by 1913 it had become a foundry. In the 1940s it was used by a building contractor. PICTURE 65 CLUE is the first image.
  20. That's right. I remember the entrance in Orchard St and every wedding photo in the wee express was that photographer. Cant remember the name though.
  21. Image 29 was the South Clock and the Charleston Drum is mentioned in relation to the Dooslan Stane (Image 42). Brought back from Waterloo (allegedly) and used to 'drum up' meetings of our militant weavers at the Dooslan Stane. Around Pages 29 and 42.
  22. Sorry about the delay guys - I had a game to go to today. All together now 'YMCA....YMCA...' . PICTURE 63 is another B Listed building by the great TG. Built in 1908. Not really too sure what the building is used for now. I know that Reid Kerr use a part of it. Only been in it once. I assume in the past that a Photographer used part of the building or got himself a great advertising billboard. PICTURE 64 CLUE is the 4th image. EDIT: Got my numbers mixed up - correct now.
  23. Some of you identified PICTURE 62 as 6 Hunter St. Originally(?) the 'Buroo' in the days before Job Centres and Social security were separate. It then became the Student Union of Paisley Tech before becoming flats. If I have missed out anything please elaborate. Unfortunately I know little else about this building so again if anyone has more info then feel free to comment. PICTURE 63 CLUE is the second image....
