I think that your criticism of McGinn is unjustified most of the time but I think you’re right in that he will see less playing time this season. I can’t remember a single game last season where he took control of the game as he’d done the previous year and his lack of pace is definitely an issue. I’m not saying he can’t influence games anymore but maybe Goody doesn’t see his as someone to build his team around?

Yes, I did. I used to have a lazy (sorry, “autonomous”) MI guy work for me too. I just created a greater scope for his role to ensure he wasn’t getting paid for f**k all and he only had time to fanny about during his breaks which suited everyone.

Had to admire his attitude last year when all of the other Stubbs signings had been dumped he kept his head down and worked hard to earns his place in the team. His hat trick at Dens gave us a glimpse of what he could be and he played his part in the playoff final. I’m sure he’ll come back stronger and we’ll see him in the stripes again.

No, it means that so far he’s failed to bring in the right players. That’s been my point all along. You accepted that the squad isn’t where it should be right now and I equate that with Gus not doing a great job up to his point. Ok, so agree the squad should be better. That’s a start and I absolutely agree that we should’ve hosed the opposition put in front of us for the League Cup so we’re almost approaching a sort of detente. However, I just can get my head around why you think evaluating where we are right now in terms of recruitment is a nonsense? For whatever reasons we seem to have failed to attract the type of player we have identified as having the right quality to improve the squad. It stands to reason that if we continue with the same strategy we may simply end up with the same results, however, as each week passes the pool of talent available dilutes. Gus (Not GLS. I don’t know why you keep tagging him onto this?)is charged with bringing players in and he’s failed to do that so far. Hopefully the people he is accountable to are asking why and are not content to wait and see what the end of August brings as it will be too late by then.

That’s all people are saying and they are asking questions about the guy who’s sole task is to provide the manager with a decent bunch of players. We’ve played four competitive matches and the league season kicks off in 10 days yet our squad is as poor as it’s been in a long time and not fit for purpose. You argue we should wait until we see the finished article before judging Gus but with that mindset maybe we should just see where we finish at the end of the season for a truly accurate review? That is, of course, nonsense but so is the view that Gus is somehow above reproach because there are 5 weeks until the window closes.

Not sure why we can’t be competitive for both tbh? If you took Popescu, Muzek, McAllister, Lyons, Jackson, Dreyer, Hodson and Nazon out of last season’s squad we’d have gone down comfortably. They’ve all left and we’ve replaced them with Andreu and Djorkaeff. I agree we should still have enough to beat the teams put in front of us but we’ve no width, no left back, no quality at centre back, little guile in midfield and back up strikers as first choice. You don’t need to wait until he’s finished to assess things now. It’s not good enough and you’re trying to defend the indefensible here. Gus has one job and he’s failing at it right now.
