John Paton I think was trying to set himself up for a job when he was trying to package the club to sell to Reg Brearley
With regards to the club ending up in a mess , there are two main reasons firstly the club spent big trying to put together a team capable of challenging for a European place , and those that were bought were not good enough to sell on at a profit . And secondly we spent loads on building a massive away stand to house average away crowds of 300.
The current board of the directors at the time have to take responsibility , and the only thing that they could have been accused of was being ambitious , and wanting St Mirren to do well .
I believe that's why our current B of D are being so prudent , as one or two bad decisions can put us down there again.

That's our next manager sorted , and his first signing target
If its possible to get a manager on a PCA , that's what we need to identify players in the lower leagues that can do a job , and get them on PCA,s

Why is Super Ally being mentioned? Anyone with the budget he was given could and should have walked the 3 divisions. The fact that his team struggled this season says a lot about just how good he is/was.

I can agree with all of that, but you have to get the balance of the side right as well and that means players with technique, ability and application.

To be honest I don,t really care who we keep , I just believe that our best way forward is to sign a group of hard working experienced players , who have played most of their careers in the lower leagues and who would welcome the opportunity to play for a club that will hopefully be challenging for promotion .
I don,t think an exclusively youth orientated squad would work , and I think there is good sense in keeping some of the existing squad .
But this close season should be seen as an opportunity , get rid of the negativity , and try to build an attack minded team

James Fowler doing a decent job at QoS. 1 up at half time. Peach of a goal from Derek Lyle - his 17th of the season. The Championship is going to be tough. Now 2 up.

    Trying to be positive here
By not renewing Cheesys , Kello,s and Teales contract , we could bring in 6 very good part timers and give them a better wage than they are currently on , Not renewing Wildes , Tesselar , Arquin , Gow , Genevs , and Daytons contracts should allow us to bring in 6 decent experienced Championship standard players and make a few savings
I would keep Thompson , Goodwin , Ridgers , Kelly , Naismith , Mallan , McLear and McGinn , Throw in a couple of loanees , and we should have a decent enough squad to compete next season.
Attendances won,t be the massive drop as in previous years , and more Saints fans might pay through the gate on a weekly basis if there is a winning team and a feelgood factor .
Its about getting the right manager in , and creating a feelgood factor within the club.

After taking time to reflect on the game last night I would like to remark on the positives - there are none, I would only keep Goodwin with the rest of 1st team playing staff and management being shown the door, the reasons for dropping the lot range from being over the hill and showing no fight right down to being absolutely no use at their current job, Gary Teale should walk now and take his assistant with him (the assistant could easily get a new job bringing through prospective actors for remakes of snow white)

The financial predicament that is now being touted by the BOD via Chick Young is a smokescreen for a number of poor decisions made at board level. If the club is allegedly in the red then the blame lies only at one door and that is the BOD.
The lack of finance in the club comes down to poor marketing of the club by the BOD, the club not embracing the fans, lack of use of the facilities 13 out of 14 days every fortnight and the poor results on the pitch.

If Cathro is seriously interested in leaving a great job at Valencia and taking over a newly relegated Championship club with no money where he'd get paid buttons, I'd fear for his mental health.

Perhaps a change of direction is required , maybe an exclusively youth development approach isn,t the way , Maybe its about identifying players in their early twenties who have lost their way , and working with them , Inverness have done very well doing this .
We need to generate enthusiasm for next season and starting next season with a team of under 21 players isn,t ideal .
A new management team needs to be in place , and trials / pre season needs to start early so we can get together a decent team for the new season and create a bit of buzz about the town .
Relegation should be our opportunity to get rid of the staleness and set foundations for the future , getting the right balance for youth and experience .

Jimmy Nicholl would be my ideal choice , loads of experience of wheeling and dealing , well respected , good contacts in the game , doing relatively well with Cowdenbeath , excellent knowledge of the league we are going to be in , and more so an awareness of decent players who may be interested in coming to us , his new role with Northern Ireland may also enable us to get a couple of decent Irish youngsters . Would consider having Goodwin and Thompson as his assistants .

Relegation should be an opportunity to get rid of all the high earners and bring in players who will graft for the team ,
Change is badly needed and we need to have somebody in place now identifying who can do a job for us next season , we know where we will be , we will have a decent budget for that league , so we should be trying to get players in on PCA , and create a bit of enthusiasm for next season , who knows if the right changes are made season ticket sales might even increase.
My belief though is that next season we shouldn,t be over reliant on youngsters , and should be targeting experienced championship players to get best value from the budget we have.

Would keep Goodwin and Thompson on reduced contracts with have them as assistant managers ( let them go if they reject the terms ) , and appoint an experienced manager to mentor them , maybe Butcher or Nicholl , and then identify a three year plan to rebuild the club top to bottom.
I don,t think an exclusively youth policy is the way forward , and our starting line up should only contain a couple of under 21 players in it , with another 3 or 4 on the bench .
We need to create some enthusiasm and energy about the club , and the rebuilding process should start now .
I liked the way Inverness started pre season training very early one season and used the process to more or less recruit a whole team , an approach like that would help season ticket sales and bring about a bit of positivity to the club.
As would an energetic and ambitious set of new owners

Sorry, this is not the beginning of the spiral and it is certainly not the end of it.
There are several people on our board who are credited with "saving" the club and who have been praised endlessly for their work which surely saw us avoid an administration event. Since then various people in our support have crowed about teams like Dundee, Hearts and Dunfermline going through administration, but look at this
St Mirren have constantly re-defined the law of diminshing returns over the last few years. We cut to save money, which leads to a reduction in resources, which leads to a reduction in quality, which leads to a reduction in success, which leads to a cut in revenue, which leads to a need to cut further, etc. We sold off the old ground that had an intrinsic value to move to a new facility that is uninspiring we invest in a youth academy that fails to produce a return on the investment due to leases, planning constraints and other issues, these so-called assets are actually worthless as no money can be made from them the kitty is now empty, after only 5 years since our re-birth we have to sell our only good player so that we can pay wages So is administration next, or will we cut so far again that the club is confined to the lower leagues for years, probably? and these guys want £1.5 million for a shareholding that they largely inherited?
    Sorry, people, we've been had!

The ultimate irony was served up yesterday................ Cajoled, encouraged, pleaded with and encouraged to spend our well earned cash by Stuart Gilmour to make the effort to go and support the team in the hour of need in Motherwell.
So we go, we watch in awe as one team wants to win it and the other goes through the motions of making up the numbers for 90 minutes.
I say "irony" as it can't escape Mr Gilmour's attention that the state of the club, the team and the position we are in, are probably 90% down to the lack of vision, commitment, investment and direction from the top that is required by any organisation if the company / team / staff are to be encouraged to win, fight for their job, and succeed. Firm management with a goal in sight is what is needed in any organisation and we have lacked this for something like four to fiveyears.
The BoD's have sought an exit ever since the Tesco deal, but they have found that the price they thought their time and investment was worth was not what others believed it was worth, so they have hung on to some long term hope that someone from somewhere will come out of the closet and pay them an amount that they think their share ownership entitles them to.
There is a direct analogy with building a house. You can spend no end of money in making that house great looking, work perfectly and appear to be the perfect residency...................... but cost and value have little or no direct link. So you can spend £1m in building a house in say Greenock, but it might only be worth only £300k.
That in effect is what the BoD's have, an asset that they think they have built that is worth X amount and the rest of the world believing it is probably worth at least 1/3rd of that amount.
I had never thought that I would argue for change the way I now feel. There is a way to force the Board but I'm not yet inclined to push for that option, but unless they commit to a vision they will see less and less commitment from the fans and the players as time dwindles by.
I'm very sad today..................... we're going down with a whimper and a distinct lack of direction
