  1. Celtic top and Dundee finished bottom leaving 10 non-OF teams and we finished 10th - we were therefore 10th in the league
  2. I somehow do not think Hearts will fold and that somewhere down the line someone will pay the additional money to have a CVA - whether this fair or not is another matter. Assuming this, we should not be behind any team who have a 15 points deduction and if we did then we simply are not good enough and would deserve whatever fate that brought. I also query why some on here believe that Thistle will finish above us? If we secure the Newcastle boys and bring in another right back then I think we can finish somewhere around 7th or 8th. However, I could not make a table up without knowing the quality and strength of the other teams (apart from Celtic). Most other clubs have had to rebuild their squads and some appear weaker than last season while others are unknown. I am going to give the first quarter of the season before deciding who will finish where. Mind you look at Ross County who were relegation fodder until after Christmas and went on that amazing run.
  3. People are forever talking, quite rightfully, about the game up here as being skint etc but the game down south is equally in big trouble. The EPL live on serviceable debt and supported by Sky while those in the lower leagues are now beginning to realise the folly of paying stupid money for mediocre players much like we did back in the 90s. Football needs to get its house in order to live within club's means (both north and south of the border) othewise we will end up with only a handful of solvent clubs outside the EPL. Portsmouth, Coventry, Leeds, Boro - all big clubs with history that have been or are in deep trouble. Sevco, Hearts, Dunfermline, Dundee - all big clubs with history in deep trouble. There will be more and you have to wonder why clubs up to their neck in debt can continue to pay players big wages - Killie with Boyd and Dungdee Utd with Goodwillie. I have no idea what they are earning but it won't be cheap.
  4. Swedish, Dutch, German and Spanish kids all play computers and have other interests so let's debunk this myth. What the Swedes and the other aforenamed mentioned countries have is the infrastructure that takes talented kids from knee high to estalished professionals. You only have to drive through most Dutch and German villages and towns to see the number and quality of football facilities. I know we did not have those way back in the past in Scotland but neither did we import hoards of foreign players, and football was played morning, noon and night by a lot more kids in the street and in the parks. We need to invest in the game from grass roots level but we all know this already and little is being done. The malaise in our game has been here for decades and kids having other interests including computer games is only a part of the problem.
  5. Cannot win with you, we lose and you are proclaiming feckin doom and gloom, we win and you are still not happy. Did you expect us to score a barrowload of goals? Thank feck you are not a Hibs supporter or you would have the Samaritans jumping off the Erskine Bridge. I think you should forget football Elvis as it clearly makes you unhappy no matter if we win or lose.
  6. I wonder, while they are at it if they would put some cameras in the traffic lights at the Raith interchange. I cannot believe the idiots who ignore red lights and decide they are going through them. I can understand, to some extent, drivers going through as it changes to amber but when you have the green light and about to drive off and some idiot is going through a red light to the right then something has to be done. Too many accidents are caused around the Raith simply through impatient drivers not stopping when they are meant to. You really have to wonder what is going on as it appears this sort of incident is fairly common these days.
  7. Really? From what I saw last season Griffiths and the young lad Harris were exceptional. McPake is a solid defender but then I begin to struggle to identify who else in that team can be considered decent. They have also lost Doyle too so they are relying on Vine to score the goals for them. I wonder if their £200k has had a change of heart after the severe humping they got last night?
  8. FFS did you see the Hibs score last night? How you can come up with this when we have not kicked a competitive ball is mind boggling. You have not seen the Killie team other than to laud Boyd who is not the player he once was, Aberdeen's new recruitment have not yet been tested but did lose to Peterhead, Motherwell have lost Higdon their main goal scorer but should be ok with McFadden on board, Dundee Utd have a lot of new players untested while ICT and Ross County have lost some of their star players. You may be right and we do not reach the top 6; personally, as long as we are not involved in a relegation battle then that will do for me. We are a club in transition like many in Scotland and it will take time to bring the young boys through and determine if they are good enough at this level. There is a benefit to being in the top 6 re a bigger part of the overall money pot. Other than that, it counts for nothing unless you win the league or get a short stint in Europe - and we can all see what this has done to Hibs. Why don't we all dry out knickers and wait to see a)what further players are coming in (if any) and just how good the other teams are with their new additions. At this time, I would rather be where St Mirren are in terms of taking forward our club and managing our finances than many of the other clubs and particularly Hibs. God only knows how you get over that level of mauling?
  9. Hibs have not replaced Griffiths or Doyle and Killie will be going with youth. Dundee Utd have lost their best players yet you exclude them from any battle to stay up - why? Peterhead beat a supposedly stronger Aberdeen side 3-2 so does that imply that Aberdeen are going to struggle this season? It was a friendly like ours. Celtic lost 6 against a poor German side in a friendly so what does that tell you about how they will fare in the SPl this season? They will win the league in a canter and that friendly matches are all about fitness and trying new things out.
  10. Would not criticise anyone about their spelling when your own grammar is a touch on the shaky side. Remember, he who throws stones etc etc ...
  11. Totally understand. My issue was more about Big Yards statement about withdrawing our support which I think is utterly ridiculous when the club need us more than ever. There will be reasons behind the delay in bringing in or deciding not to bring in player. We have no inside knowledge of this and to be honest, if Danny has more in the budget then there will be activity behind the scenes that we will be privvy to in time. Like you, I would rather see the club operate within the financial constraints than pay out what we cannot afford.
  12. McManus would be plying his trade down south if he was still good enough. He was hardly an excellent player at Celtic (good but not great). Hibs paying out £200k (where the fk did they get the money) for a striker does not guarantee success (Clayton Donaldson anyone)? Of course they have not signed him yet. My point is that every club is scraping around for players and many coming in are likely to be not as good as those going out.
  13. Aye that will help Danny and the club by withdrawing much needed resources. Being a fan means supporting your team through thick and thin. What would you think if we all refused to pay our hard earned cash and we went belly up? We are not being taken for a bunch of mugs. The club have limited finances and made it clear that we would not go down the route of overspending and bringing us to the brink where we were before SG came on board. This is a tough time for virtually all clubs in Scotland and the aim should be to ensure we have a club in existence and not going through what other clubs have recently had to do. Why don't you wait until our full squad is known and rid yourself of the ridiculous statement of withdrawing your money. That, of course, is your choice and you are free to stay away from the club if you feel that staying away will help us bring on board more players. Btw, most of the the SPL clubs have brought in journeymen and not one of them I would consider a class - other than perhaps McFadden at Murderwell who took a pay cut. Name me one other 'big' signing made by any of the SPL clubs? I think we will be fine when a few loan deals are concluded.
  14. Just what I thought, nothing constructive to say. Sad that someone gets so upset when we lose a friendly match. It is the St Mirren way to disappoint more than please - I know having watched them since 1968 - so nothing surprises me. I will save my angst until we play a meaningful game when points means prizes or progression in a cup.
  15. Thanks for clearing that up. I agree with you that the team does need strengthening and believe that will happen. Friendly matches are notorious for producing weird results as managers try out things and also getting the cobwebs from certain players - we know that some train harder than others. I won't judge/criticise the team or the manager until at least the first quarter of the season. We will have played against all those other teams who have made a lot of changes and will be in a position to determine the strength and quality of each of them (bar Celtic of course). We already know the strengths/weakensses in those players who were first team regular last season but what we do not know is how good the young lads are that will be asked to fill certain positions for those who have left or through injury/suspensions. We need to keep backing the team and the manager. Final point, Hibs must be panicking as they appear to have bid £200k for a Swindon player. How can they afford to spend that sum when the game is rooked here?
  16. FFS Billy, I am surprised at you of all folk. It was only our second outing pre-season and, as stated, a number of experiments were carried out. The manager will know what happened as will the players. To begin stating he has a month to get it right is bullshit. Do you know whether he has been given this ultimatum or are you simply stating that timescale? Should we not wait until we see the full squad that Danny is working with plus how we perform in a competitive match before we make any judgement on how we are likely to perform over the coming season? If it all goes pear-shaped then things will happen but at least give it a bit more time than our second game pre-seaon where players need match practice and fitness. I wonder if the level of panic would be the same if it had not been the great unwashed who had beaten us in our own park.
  17. He is overweight and has an attitude problem. There is a reason he is playing for Kilmarnock and not one of the lower league teams down South. Yes, he will score goals but not at the same prolific rate as previous. If he does, then he will be off somewhere else much like Griffiths.
  18. I know it was against our rivals but people, get a grip here. This was only our second game and useful for the management to try things out. Other than bragging rights, the game was meaningless in real terms. Looking into friendly games while players are rusty does not indicate what will happen when the real deal begins with the game at ICT. I would rather any deficiencies are found at this time for the manager to deal with than during the season. It was a bad day at the office on Saturday but the season has not even started yet and players will require more match practice and fitness. Morton have had more games than us and while that does not excuse us for losing 4 goals against them, we should not consider this a reflection of how our season is going to go as there is still time for others to come in (loan or otherwise) and for those young players to gain some much needed experience. The cries of doom on this forum after a poor pre-season so far is ridiculous. Celtic shipped 6 goals against a German second division side who did not win 1 home game all last season so does that make them a bad team after one bad day at the office? It was a friendly and an exercise in getting players match fit - much like us on Saturday.
  19. So we have additional strikers and they are also injured or suspended, then what? If Thommo gets injured then we will struggle like any other team that loses their main striker. We then need to rely on others to get the goals much like we have done in decades. We really have to go back to Basher and Yards when we had two main strikers and if one got injured then we relied on others within the team to help out in the goal scoring area. Before then it was Somner and McDougall. Let's wait and see if another front man comes in before we all begin to wet ourselves even further.
  20. 47 is just far too young. Makes you appreciate each and every day. Sorry for this sad news mate and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time.
  21. The current squad have good players but no depth. In winter away at tannadice with thommo injured is Reilly the main man to lead the line. I am sorry but factor in injury or suspension and we have absolutely no chance. The squad is one of the weakest in the league - bookies have us as one of the faves for the drop Can you tell me the players that Thistle have brought in to strenghten them for the SPL? Ok what about Hibs replacing Griffiths and Doyle (their main strikers)..no? Hearts are in turmoil and yet you state that bookies have us as one of the faves to go down? Our squad have lost some quality players; the Newcastle boys got stick on here at times as have all the others who have left as not being good enough or committed enough. The management have decided who should stay and who should go having watched them in training and on the pitch. The season has not yet begun and we have the usual hysteria because our rivals have brought in a lot of untried or journeymen to their teams. Motherwell capturing McFadden is the best deal and if Boyd sticks with Killie then he will provide some goals but he is way past his best now. ICT have a lot of untried players too. Until we know our full squad for the season and play the opposition at least once then we cannot determine whether our squad is good enough or has strength in depth. I am happy to wait as there are a lot of players still out of contract and confident our management team will plug the gaps at LB and up front.
  22. I remember that Arsenal game where Peter Weir went out to impress having heard that they were interested. He scored two good goals that day but I also remember their player Paul Davis having a blinder. We lost that game 3-2 I think.
  23. It is called news and if there is no actual news then our beloved club will not feature. They also say no news is good news so maybe you and a few others may be in for a surprise. Btw, just as an aside do you or anyone know the origins of the word 'news' if not I can enlighten.
