Because if your reserve 'keeper is 18 years old your 1st choice 'keeper has less incentive to be at the top of his game week in, week out. Having a two keepers of equal ability brings out the best in them. C. Smith and Howard had good seasons when they were battling it out to be #1. Gallacher was excellent in his 1st season when he was up against Howard, and was rubbish in his 2nd season when DL made it clear Samson was in reserve. Sammy had a good season up against G. Smith, and hasn't been as good this season when the other 'keeper, has been unavailable for various reasons. Just my hypothesis, mind.

Remind me how many goals Carey has contributed this season, and how many McLean has?

We can't afford to carry Carey in the team for little return. This season his set pieces have led to one good save from Forster, and that's about it. Last season was slightly better I think, but still poor overall. Most of our goals from set pieces come from Gary Teale. We'll not miss Carey. As for Parkin, I actually quite liked him and thought he was a good option to bring off the bench, though he's paid to score goals and he didn't deliver. All the best guys. You leave as cup winners and heroes.

I just watched "The Fantastic Mr. Feynman" on the iPlayer and it was, well, fantastic. The film which is broadly based on his last few months alive, investigating the Nasa disaster called "The Challenger" is also on the iPlayer just now.

I'm under the impression that we budget for finishing 11th and getting papped out of the cup at the earliest opportunity every year. Therefore finishing 8th was a bonus last year, winning the league cup is a bonus this year. The club won't make a loss if we finish 11th this year, even before you factor in money from the cup.
