Whilst this might not be the most imaginative and exciting appointment on the face of it, there is some common sense around it.
The players apparently rate Tommy Craig very highly, he is well liked by all accounts. That said, it makes it seem more likely to me that the chances of (the ones we want to keep) maybe increased by him staying put.
The continuity from the boards perspective is probably a good thing. They know Tommy, he knows them, they don't need to go through the mill of starting again. Given that they might not be there for much longer you can see why that might be attractive.
Tommy Craig has good contacts. It's through him that we got the Newcastle kids and lest we forget those lads did not bad for us in the cup winning season.
Tommy will surely either be assisted by someone else or will be head coach in a Director of Football type setup similar to the one Hearts have. John Collins would be the obvious choice as DoF. Again well respected, good contacts and also successful as a manager when he was at Hibs.
Time will tell if that is the case, or maybe someone like Thommo or Teale as assistant might be the plan. Time will tell.
As far as I am personally concerned I'd give anyone a fair crack of the whip. It's silly to throw the toys out the pram just because the appointment is not a "sexy" one.
It's a results driven business at the end of the day !

As long as its not Barry Snotters, then the new manager will have my full SUPPORT.
People naming names and deriding before anyone is even appointed, is just insulting and very, very stupid IMO

Could be Craig as caretaker to sort out the contracts while the Board look for a replacement.

I think the most telling thing about today's events is what never happened. Most of us knew or strongly suspected Danny was leaving at the end of the season, so that news wasn't a big surprise. The most surprising news was that Tommy Craig is still at the club. This was an assistant apparently picked by Danny.

To me that signifies one of two things. One is that Tommy is about to take over. I think that's pretty unlikely, he's more of a coach than a manager and there's never been any rumours that he's after the main job in his 3 years here. The second more likely explanation is that Tommy is going to remain as assistant to the new manager.

This could mean that the BoD have earmarked Murray, but won't accept Jack Ross (his assistant) coming with him due to his history with the BoD, bonus gate et all. Therefore Murray comes to us, TC continues as assistant as a condition of his employment and acts as the very experienced sounding board, Jack Ross gets the Dumbarton job.
Alternatively, maybe they're intent on an internal promotion. Teale, Thompson maybe even Longwell, and they want an experienced coach like Tommy to be the tutor for a manager in his first ever senior coaching job.
Thirdly, and most intriguingly, John Collins and Tommy Craig have a relationship that goes back to Johns playing days at Celtic. Tommy has been Johns assistant at both of Collins managerial roles (Hibs and Charleroi). Perhaps the reason Tommy's still here is actually because he just happens to be the new managers chosen and trusted assistant.

Anyway, the only conclusion I can draw from all this is that it certainly won't be Barry f**king Ferguson!

The last time we had a poll like this on here, the name of the eventual manager wasn't even mentioned, and the site was alot quieter then than it is now apparently!

Would it be a big shock if that happened again? I don't think so.
I just hope whoever it is, that the decision is made this week, or early next week at the latest. No matter who the BoD pick there will be some fans (probably alot of fans) not happy, but hopefully we all get behind him no matter who it is or where he comes from.

It's none of my business really, but I'd agree with that. He'd command a large fee but there's no evidence he deserves the reputation that some Saints fans are willing to give him. If you are going to spend big money then someone with a proven track record of working with younger players would make more sense. McDowell, Stark or Clarke would fit that bill but I can't see any of them being stupid enough to want the St Mirren job. McDowell and Stark have two of the cushiest jobs in Scottish Football and Clarke must surely have his eye on either a managers job or an assistants job in the Premiership down south.
Of the rest being touted for the job Ian Cathro would be an interesting name if he threw his hat into the ring. Well done to the poster who pulled that one out. Cathro was always highly regarded around the Largs circuit as a top quality coach. He didn't like Wotte's plans for the direction of the Elite Academies and it's true he believed that Scottish Chairmen wouldn't take a punt on him because of his lack of professional football experience. Gary Locke would be another. I know Locke might not be seen as the most popular appointment but he's actually done much better than I expected during a very turbulent period at Hearts and the progress his young squad made has been evident for everyone to see. And the likes of David Weir, John Hartson, Barry Ferguson and Chris Sutton would be no more than an uncharacteristic wild punt.

I imagine Callum Davidson is being groomed as the next St Johnstone manager. We would do worse than follow their line of thought when appointing a manager; Stuart Cosgrove on Off the Ball outlined their criteria a while back, something like:
    - Young, hungry ambitious individual looking to do well then move on to bigger and better things
    - Experience of playing at the top level ideally in Scotland and England
    - Loads of contacts as a result of the above point
Derek McInnes, Owen Coyle, Steve Lomas and Tommy Wright all fit the above as does Callum Davidson. McInnes, Coyle and Lomas all earned St Johnstone compensation when leaving too.
As an outsider I'd throw in Ian Cathro. He started coaching youngsters in Dundee as part of a business he set up on his own; Craig Levein was very impressed and gave him a role overseeing Dundee United's youth set up (credited with developing Armstrong, Gauld and others). He then moved on to a similar role with the SFA before being offered a first team coach role with Rio Ave in Portugal by a guy he met while doing his coaching badges at Largs.
He moved to Portual, learnt Portuguese and ended with Rio Ave qualifying for Europe after having their most successful season ever. Rio Ave are the Scottish equivalent of maybe Hamilton Accies with crowds of about 1500. I doubt many Scottish coaches could move abroad, learn the language and be a success.
This guy seems to have excelled in every role he's had despite never having played football professionally and has complained in the past of the clique that meant he doubted he would get a chance of becoming a manager in Scotland.
It would be a risk but I think worth asking if he was interested. It would certainly be more imaginative than some of the contenders.

Funny how the same people who've been championing Danny's League Cup win are asking what Collins has done in management
I'm sure many people have referred to Alex Ferguson as a 'knob'. Being a nice guy isn't a required skill for being a good manager.

    Yes, he was.
He's been in charge of Hibs & Charleoi. Was terrific in his short spell at Hibs and won the League Cup, went to Belgium and saved Charleoi from relegation..
