  1. What Alex Rae said last was he wants to play good football but his immediate priority was getting the squad into being more competitive, then take it from there. The players he has signed are a blend of good players with good physicality. The example he used was that the midfield of McMullen, Agnew and Mallan didn't have sufficient physicality.

As for the U20s his point was they are in the development business, but Rae is in the winning 3 points business. He wants to give the younger players the opportunity to play first team football but he isn't convinced the U20 league is the best preparation to breaking into the first team.

With the exception of Mallan and McGin his point on u20s seemed pretty well thought through, in my opinion.

  2. Mallan certainly isn't the problem, he's a superb prospect. The observation that he drifts in games is valid of the entire side.

Returning to the original post, I don't think our defence is too bad, we just do too much of it and often in deep positions. Agnew hasn't worked out and both parties should acknowledge this and find an amicable way to part, Gow must be moved on; if he's not bad for team morale he's terrible for fan morale even if we lose some modest money shifting him is the right decision. Where we'll find combative midfielders right now (other than return of Goody) I don't know but there must be one or two around.

  3. I considered Ian Murray to be a good appointment.

I think we've failed to hold onto winning positions in 5 home league fixtures this season.

I also think we've lost goals in the 90min point on 4 league fixtures this season.

The goals we've scored have often had good fortune, and not resulted from well worked football, last night, second against Falkirk, Alloa and Dumbarton.

At one point yesterday I watched Kelly get to the byline and then I realised how rare its been to see Saints get into that sort of position.

While the decline does predate Ian Murray he is out his depth with the job. Regrettably, I was (along with dozens of others) wrong about Murray's ability; to avoid relegation play off Murray needs to be replaced.

  4. Were we not good when we pumped Killie at the end of last season? I ask because I didn't go due to being so gutted by every other home match we played being so depressing.

I had to work the day of the Killie match, and I'm open minded to the notion that Saints played well. However, I'm less generous to accept it mattered as we were already relegated (or as good as resigned to it). The Hibs match from the season before is the last time I can recall needing a result at home and getting it.

  5. Seriously though... it is a bit depressing, isn't it?

Agree with you to an extent about appointing up and comers...

However, Murray's record at Dumbarton did nothing to excite me. Quite the opposite.

I know he was up against it at Dumbarton... but still... the goals against record was alarming.

Yup, for what its worth I didn't read between the lines, I was pleased with the appointment in May. The evidence is now plain as day that he's out his depth and while St Mirren's decline pre dates the appointment; Murray has failed to manage it.

I'm now, no longer selective about who gets the job next, it just needs to be someone who can salvage the damage in this season and bring a competitive spirit to the performances.

  6. Miller is in to force Murray out on the cheap. It will blow up in the boards face though if Murray digs his heels and and says 'f**k em'

Agreed. Any success from this point is Miller's and continued failure will be 'credited' to Murray. My hunch, is Murray will resign (leaving on the cheap) maybe at the end of the season but its difficult to believe he's going to be around for any sort of sustained period.

  7. More positives than negatives but can't help feeling we should have and could have taken at least a point.

If playing two up, I would have started Shankland and Gallagher with Thommo coming on as an impact sub.

Goodwins early booking was purely the tef taking the easy option to take the pressure off himself. He knew once booked, Goodie wouldn't be able to force him into making any hard decisions at the risk of upsetting his fellow Rangers fans!!!

Number 4 for them should have been booked three times!

Kelly was poor... and worse still, blowing out of his arse early in tbe second half.

Whole team bar Goodwin looks shockingly unfit and lacking in stamina.

Carswell? What's the point? No effort... no application... no tackling... ambling around the park like nothing mattered. Guy really annoyed me with that "performance".

Shankland should have come on for Thommo... who had his best game of the season.

Two forwards should have been tight on their number 4 in the latter stages.... not one on each wing!!!

Major tactical questions yet again... but a bit of hope to reassure me that the squad is indeed good enough to challenge at the top end this season.

And that's more positives than negatives?

  8. September 1989, we beat Celtic 1 nil at Love St. Campbell Money had been knocked out in the first half but played on and had a wonderful second half. In the last couple of minutes Derek Whyte smacked a header into the top corner, I think everyone thought it was in except Campbell Money who somehow tipped it over the bar, when it already appeared to have got behind him.

He was a terrific goalie, the best one I've seen play for Saints.

  9. I assume you understand the FPTP and two party system we have in Westminster?

If you do, you'll know the answer. There's only two parties who have a chance of forming a government in May, they are Labour and the Conservatives.

Ergo any seat lost by Labour to the SNP is good for the Tories. Ditto any seat lost by Tories to UKIP is good for Labour. Pretty simple really.

I'm voting SNP in May for tactical reasons. I want Labour to lose as many seats up here as possible, thus increasing the chances of David Cameron and George Osbourne remaining in power. A Tory majority in 2015 will hopefully make the proper cuts to the bloated welfare state and public sector that this country urgently needs.

Westminster doesn't have a two party system - if it did then there would be no Labour party. I'm waiting for the Tory-Labour coalition to be formed in an attempt to create a two party system.

Any seat lost by Labour to the SNP increases the likelihood that the Tories will be the largest party, it doesn't mean that the Tories have a better chance at a majority - it doesn't gain the Tories anything, in fact the SNP are less likely to support the Tories than Labour is (though that isn't very likely either), so the Tories could potentially "lose out".

I'm expecting a Tory-UKIP coalition, created by only English MPs or, possibly, with the inclusion of N.I. Orange bigots too, and Labour to get humiliated in both Scotland and England, but still to do well in Wales. I think most of the seats UKIP win (there won't be that many) will be from Labour due to traditional Labour voters not be able to bring themselves to vote Tory.

My guess is that Tory: DUP coalition is more probable, I doubt UKIP will be required. I'd also expect this election to get a very poor turnout

  10. I can recall a brilliant friendly against Arsenal in the early 80s, I think we'd both been put out our respective cup contests and there was a free Saturday in the schedule.

The other friendly of the more obscure variety, I can recall, was against Tampa Bay Rowdies, I think Saints pumped them

  11. A decent candidate and SNP would have romped it but is this Lassie decent? She's already lost the majority of Sellic fans and I can't see the elderly voter voting for a wee girl to represent them.A classic own goal by SNP.

I will have to have a rethink about my own vote as this girl just doesn't inspire me,I'll probably end up putting in a spoiled paper.

I agree, I'd be uncomfortable voting for any candidate of Black's age. Much as I'd like to see Alexander lose, I think he'll retain the seat due to the SNP's candidate choice. Although, I've said much MUCH worse things about Celtic myself.

  12. The one done by Lord Wotsisface was. Did he not poll 1000 folk in 15 (I think) seats which were currently held by Labour and the Libdems and all but 1 were looking like SNP. The Labour ones were mainly in Glasgow. IIRC his results matched the other polls which, I think, also took seats into account. Not really been paying that much attention to them as I do not put a lot of faith in polls, so I could be wrong.

Lord Ashcroft. Yes, your understanding is the same as mine:

Paisley South is one of the seats Ashcroft researched, but I think the research is before Black was selected.
