Bud the Baker
Odessey & Oracle - The Zombies In the summer of '67 washed up mod band The Zombies who had been dropped by Decca Records were given £1000 by Columbia Records to cut an album. Unbeknownst to everyone the group had changed their recreational substances of choice and delivered the aforementioned album. Problems with the record company and internal strife meant that the band split before the LP's release and they did no promotional work for the record. In places reminiscent of that other (almost) lost masterpiece Smile by Brian Wilson the interplay between guitar and keyboards reminds me of the pastoral beauty of early Genesis albums. The album finishes with the one of the tracks that define the psychedelic era Time of the Season which was a hit all over the world outside Britain and has been sampled in many TV show including The Simpsons episode where Homer rediscovers his hippy upbringing. ********************************** What's your name? Who's your daddy? Is he rich like me? Has he taken any time To show you what you need to live?
