Just to let you know that Cllr. Sharkey and some residents have organised another public meeting tonight. Burning torches, pitchforks, and such like will be provided. They will not be happy until the training ground is closed in the evenings so that the lights don't pollute their environment, and the youngsters stop making any noise.

Anger as council snubs footie site showdown

Nov 4 2009 by Cameron Hay, Paisley Daily Express

RESIDENTS in the upmarket Ralston area of Paisley have shown council chiefs a red card after they snubbed an invite to a public meeting to tackle problems caused by St Mirren’s new training base.

More than 160 Ralston homeowners have signed a petition to highlight their concerns about the training ground, in Allanton Avenue, which they claim is making their lives a misery.

Among the problems they have identified are the strength of floodlights, excessive noise, a build-up of traffic and loss of privacy.

They also fear the value of their properties could be adversely affected.

A public meeting will take place in Ralston Community Centre tonight at 7pm and protesters have been left fuming after bosses at Renfrewshire Council turned down an invitation to attend the event.

In a letter sent to the Ralston Residents’ Action Group, the council’s director of communications, Paul Gannon, insisted the fact there is an ongoing planning application submitted by St Mirren concerning the training base means it would be inappropriate for him to go along to the meeting.

Mr Gannon added: “The council will require to have regard to the statutory and other provisions which apply to the consideration of that planning application and, in view of this, attendance at the public meeting would not be appropriate.”

But the decision has been slammed by Councillor Jim Sharkey, who represents residents in the Ralston area.

Mr Sharkey said: “I am disgusted the council officials have refused to attend the public meeting.

“Their reason for not doing it because of a planning application by St Mirren is retrospective.

“I’ve given my commitment to the residents that I will turn up at the meeting and I want to see representatives from St Mirren there too.

“What had been called for is a proper public meeting on the issues. This was promised to the residents by the council in October 2007 and has never been done.

“It is time to listen to people instead of telling them what to accept.”

Brian Caldwell, St Mirren’s general manager, confirmed he has received an invite to tonight’s meeting.

He added: “Three directors and myself met with representatives of RRAG, councillors and council officials on Friday to discuss outstanding issues in relation to our new training facilities.

“It gave everyone the opportunity to air their views.

“We were able to update the residents on where we are in relation to these outstanding issues, in particular the floodlighting, and try to move forward and be good neighbours.”

The problem with the lights is being dealt with and new bulbs with less glare are being fitted.St Mirren are doing all they can to meet the residents requirements.I have a message to Mr Sharkey regarding his committment to the residents.Thats your feckin job and what you were elected to do.I also have a message to the residents.Do you want to return to the barren wasteland which was a drinking den for your local and not so local lads and ladettes.

In a show of support for the club, we should hold regular magic bottle vigils at the training ground. The Supras could organise it - lots of sweary placards, a few fireworks and big Shuggie leading the choir. :)

Toys R Us are doing a sale oan Star Wars goodies......a chibbed up lightsabre duel would be epic.

No doubt they'll call enviromental health next to complain about a giant invisible bee disturbing their peace

Noticed this in The Sun today:

Turn the Buddie lights off

SPL side St Mirren have called in a team of experts after angry locals claimed floodlights at the club's training ground were "blinding" them.

Resident's living next to the club's multi-million-pound facilitiy in Ralston, Paisley, branded the glare "too bright".

And yesterday the Buddies admitted the problem could be down to them ordering the wrong bulbs.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "It is honestly like something from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Everyone has had enough."

Last night Buddies general manager Bryan Caldwell said: "We've got specialists to look at the lights.

"We are trying to be good neighbours and we will change the type of bulb we are using."

Just to let you know, St Mirren, as a gesture of goodwill, have agreed to switch off the lights at 9pm from Monday the 16th November. From Monday the14th December there will be no night time use of the astro pitches (except Wednesdays) until the 18th of January, as the youth teams will be shut down. This should be enough time to revise the lighting setup. The club are also tendering for high level netting to go above the already 6m high fence. The club will be arranging an open day for local residents during the Christmas holidays.

Will that be enough for you Cllr. Sharkey ???????????

Of course it won't. The locals won't be happy until they have it for themselves as a secure dog walking area. <_<

Nothing, but nothing, gets people's backs up like the idea that they might lose a couple grand off the value of their house. I've worked in and with the local press for years and the only time people protest about anything, you can guarantee house value is the root cause. Doesn't matter what they dress it up as - concerns about the environment (new building developments), noise (airports), health (phone masts), traffic problems...

There's nowt worse than NIMBY, but they make good copy so journo's will only be too happy to fuel their fires. I know I always was - I dined out on mobile phone mast stories for about three years. It'll come to nothing in the end because the council has given Saints permission to build exactly what we've built - it's impossible to take that permission away.

Just let them bump their gums until they find something else to whinge about. Can I suggest we set up a welfare and cottaging centre for gay convict immigrant heroine users round the corner? They'll soon forget about Saints.

Probably worthy of its own thread; however I see that cuntcillor sharkey has been showing his true colours by behaving in an aggresive and abusive manner following his fellow cuntcillors pointing and laughing at his as he carried on his bizarre campaign against St Mirren football club and the gentlefolk of Paisley. He has effectively been told to stop being a fanny by his own party.:lol:

'robust politics in Renfrewshire'...................laugh.gif

I once was doorstepped by Sharkey and he really is quite a persistant and dogmatic individual, imho of course.

The guy clearly has an agenda , a chip and a half plus a rather bumptious and condescending attitude. Of course he never picked up my vote despite his promises , then again no feckin doorstepping politician is getting my vote , rather my back up.

For the record Councillor Sharkey, I have since moved flipa.gif
