I thought this was the original plan as well, seen the guys behind it on a daytime programme, think it was Homes Under the Hammer, and I thought retail was planned. 38 minutes ago, HSS said: Don’t think retail was ever part of the plan.If I remember correctly downstairs was earmarked for community use in a PACE sort of way. There was some discussion on here about this when it was on the TV programme I mentioned, not sure how to search it, that might clear this up? Canny remember any more, I was hoovering and tidying up just passing in the living room, my wife was watching it...... Found this in the Homes Under the Hammer thread.................... Slarti
Found this in the Homes Under the Hammer thread.................... Think they said on the programme that it was to be offices on ground floor then the income from that would be used to turn other floors into flats. They were expecting to get several grants, as they were led to believe that it was almost just a formality of applying for them, but were apparently rejected for them all. [emoji44]First memories of the Canal Street building are from about the mid to late 70's and not realising that it was just built.

Eric Arthur Blair
Another personal one, Sweenie's was owned by my great Uncle Jack Sweenie (my Mum's uncle). This was their shop and showroom in Smithhills St (where the road under the car park is now) and the warehouse was across the road beside the Old Swan. IIRC the showroom moved round the corner to Old Sneddon St.
rabuddies
It did indeed. Bought a fair bit of furniture and fittings in the early 70's from the Old Sneddon shop. That was when the public sector bought locally. Sweenie, Jimmy Spence in Broomland Street and Archibald McKellar in Thornliebank did very well for a number for years.
