Guest somner9
Grainger is, sorry was a good player but represents a risk to whoever signs him. Carlisle had him pre-season and couldn't make their mind up then, we've had him in for a game where he f**ked a up a few passes. That said DL is offereing him a deal. Grainger's agent will obviously be playing DL off against carlisle and any other potential club who might offer him more. It's obvious the board hadn't/wouldn't sanction the budget to sign the likes of Grainger until all other (Cheaper) options had been exhausted. That is a risk they have taken! As has been pointed out if Grainger was part of our pre-season training he'd be in a much better place right now. The BoD have been uber cautious, tying up a lot of time and budget to get Watt in on loan. Now that's deed panic has set in as it's obvious our defence and overall strength is shaky. as soon as we hit Aug 1st then who knows what bizarre players/deals we will be linked with as everyone tries to get themselves a club before the first game. I suggest the BoD have called it wrong seeking false economies, rather than securing players where we were light early doors. It's feckin easy to criticise it from the sidelines, we may end up with a couple of pearls, but it's a bit self-inflicted and unecessary in my book. Drew
Still no panic here, but it would be interesting to know what, if any, strategy has been employed this close season in terms of developing the squad. Like most, I assumed the clear out was designed to cut costs, but also to make space on the wage bill for a couple of players in key areas. With no disrespect to Harkins, he doesn't play in a key area in terms of the current gaps in our squad. It isn't simply about signings, though. We have one natural left full back in Yaqub, yet he doesn't seem to have featured a great deal in the pre season matches played thus far. Seems a bit odd, that one. There is time yet, and we will see movement but the absence any clearly discernible sense of design as to how things are taking shape.... or not, depending on your point of view, is a curious one. E=Mc2
Could blame DL for not tying anyone down, could blame the board for not providing enough money for him to get who he wants.. who knows. Maybe Newcastle have a left back going spare. Could "blame" a thousand folk who are wavering about buying season tickets that would have given our club another £200,000 And will nobody please reply that our board should speculate to accumulate. Hearts have 10,000 supporters speculating just to ensure they have a stadium and team to watch. Super_Saints
Why is everyone assuming the deal is dead as said on here he was at Carlisle 4 weeks ago so if he was guaranteed to sign for them why wait until now ?

billyg
Why is everyone assuming the deal is dead as said on here he was at Carlisle 4 weeks ago so if he was guaranteed to sign for them why wait until now ? Agreed , but the seeds of doubt have been sown by Graeme McPherson of the Herald who reckons the player is "looking at his options" , a sure sign that someone else is in for him ! Super_Saints
So someone else is in for him a don't think we should be just ruling ourself out IMO that was gus main problem in the transfer market he just admitted defeat before trying
Murray7
It simply means that we not willing to chuck the money at him that he's looking for. Happens all the time, certainly shouldn't be using this as a beating stick for the management team; DL has found his target, a proven SPL player and BC is struggling towards an contract agreement. Our terms, or we'll find someone else. He should be grateful that anyone is willing to take a punt on him after such a long time out. aldo_j
Was it not Sheffield Utd he was on trial with before Blackpool and not Carlisle? Sure I saw mention of him playing under Davie Weir.

It can't be ideal to bring in two to three players one week before league kick off there is no way our management would want to be is this situation. When the season ended Danny said they had a list of players names handed to Brian.( Paisley Express ) You really have to ask the question is the club backing the manager ? Or are wage demandsmore than we are willing to pay. Everyone will think we have money to splash with a cup win which might not be the case. There is no getting away from the fact this has been an extremely poor preseason on all fronts, even Danny has made his concerns public with on field activities. Would imagine the team bus will leave for Stockport today with no Granger. Possibly meeting the team in Stockport will be Newton and a striker on loan from Newcastle if not they will join during the week days away from the first game. The whole build up to the season has not been good and I'm sure Danny and Craig feel the same.

Bud the Baker
I've been saying for a few weeks that DL is obviously playing poker trying to get the best players in within our budget and obviously Gringer would represent a bit of a coup in that regard but having played him as a trialist and stated publicly that he wants him then DL has to issue a dealine (and not a long one) to sort it one way or another. No doubt we could have got more players in by now but that would risk a situation similar to the Summer of Beath a few years ago and I reckon this site would be in even more of a meltdown if we had signed the calibre of players ICT & Butcher have although his track record in this area seems to be decent. Players will become available in August but this has to be balanced against the possibility of a poor start to the league campaign. Time to worry - yes. Time to panic - who knows. The joys of being a Saints fan - close your eyes, take a deep breath and smile! As ever, COYS! Edited July 26, 2013 by Bud the Baker

davidg
Possibly hasn't featured much as he's doing Ramadan? He's played for the 20's but it's debatable that he's a natural left back. From what I've seen he's stronger in left mid.

class of 76-77
Grainger is training with the squad at their Manchester training base, with a view to him playing tomorrow and then signing. So why all the speculation that he's going elsewhere.
