We were chasing a European place at the time and had won 4-0 at Easter Road the previous week. Not to meantion that we beat Hearts 5-2 the following week to clinch the UEFA spot. That game also officially relegated Dumbarton who had put together a monumental collapse after looking safe, and thus saving a totally rank rotten Hibs team from the drop. Anyone who has driven along the Sydenham bypass from the George Best/City Airport will have seen the Oval. It's a really dilapidated old stadium which reflects the dire state of Glentoran's finances. Rory McIlroy bailed them out a few years back but they will struggle to survive. The Oval is right beside what was/is the Harland & Wolff yard and that's why it got caught up in the blitz. There is something about the ground which reminds me a bit of our beloved Love Street.

Saints top scorer in 49/50 was Davie Lapsley with 9 goals........8 of which were penalties!!! http://www.stmirren.info/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/People/DavieLapsley.jpg I've never been in the Brandywell Stadium. I would go now if there was a match I really wanted to see but until the Good Friday Agreement came into being I wouldn't have fancied it. The first time I went to Derry on business I was given directions to the house where a client lived. He gave me directions where to go after I had crossed the bridge and I assumed he meant the old Craigavon Bridge in the middle of the city. He didn't mention it was the new Foyle bridge he meant. I realised my mistake as I passed Free Derry Corner in my car with a mainland registration. Honestly, folk were staring at me and I don't mind admitting I was crapping myself. I kept going until I found a place where I could turn and it was right outside the Brandywell. I made it out safely and luckily wasn't stopped. With my accent I honestly could have been in big trouble. Jackie Neilson at inside left? That must have been something to see.
