Jack Smith

There have to be rules, but they can surely be flexible. I'm not saying that Jack Smith is worth another hundred a week (I wouldn't know him if he came up and bit my bum) but £100 won't break the bank so I hope St.Mirren don't lose really good lads by penny pinching. It's an entirely different story when we're talking about a first team player looking for an extra £1K or more per week.

He would double his wages by just sitting on the bench i would imagine.

I think the club were trying to give him a kick in the arse.

I thought after seeing him last pre-season he would have had an impact last season especially when only one forward was doing the business.

Looks like Daddy has somewhere else lined up for him

What qualification is it working towards?

How many years is the apprenticeship?

I have answers to neither of these questions but having a 16-y-o child I happened to know the hourly rate for apprenticeships these days and threw it into the gumbo as the reason Saints could pay what some people (including yourself) were suggesting was below the NMW.

Out of all the youth guys we have released/lost has anyone came back to haunt us? Nobody has went on to bigger clubs than StMirren.

Remember the uproar when we released McCay,Mckenna,Baird,Molloy and even McShane last season.

Normally they trickle their way down the leagues and you never hear of them again.

Baird.

Smith and McGinn were not released though, they were offered a deal and have turned it down to go part time in the First Division.

Also, as pointed out above this is no apprenticeship, the chances of getting a full time job at the end of it are not great!

I agree Shull, neither should the minimum wage tongue.png

Minimum wage?

3 hours training a day * 5 days = 15 hours.

At £100 a week, that makes about £6.70 per hour.

Not many opportunities for an 18 year old to earn that amount of money per hour for basically doing f**k all.

Sigh! Kids these days just expect everything on a plate.

Jack is basically living up to the reputation today's kids have these days for being bone f**king idle, greedy and spoiled.

My minimum wage comment was a joke for Shull, nothing more.

If the boy is good and has a fair chance of making a career in football £100 pw. is risible, 18yrs old or not. I hope the story isn't true. Possibly the club's wiew is that he hasn't got what it takes.

If that's the case then I think we have to respect the club's view on that and accept he maybe just isn't worth being offered more.

Have to disagree with the "risible" comment. The boy is kicking a ball for 15 hours a week. We seriously need to get things in perspective here.

Brilliant biggrin.png

You say that but ............. it starts with me getting all frothy at the mouth, continues with someone like RosstheBoss calling me names and then Dickson spots the thread and before you know it we're arguing about Europe and Tory schools policy and fox hunting.

Then you'll need to stop firing off your ridiculous cancer analogy.

FAR too serious for a mere fitba discussion. No Buddie else was remotely as serious as yersel.

It's only etc....

Money should be deducted from his 100 pounds a week for him receiving top class training and coaching.

How about 19 quid a day ?

Leaves enough for a sweetie and and a McGills weekly ticket.

The terms we offered were good enough for Brady and Yaqub, so let's not slate the clubs wage policy as a whole.

On reflection i think that Yaquab and Brady have been offered and signed pro contracts, and Smith turned down a further apprentice deal. So if he can sign pro elsewhere it's no-brainer for him, and probably indicates what potential DL/TC see in him. (Worth aa apprentice wage to see if he can step it up, not yet worth pro contract)

Can't really comment on Smith's ability but £120 a week is a fair wage for an 18 year old. Comparisons between young footballers and apprentices/students are imperfect, but any 18 year old living with his parents (as I assume he does) will get by very nicely on that kind of wage.

PS. I see oaksoft name-dropped me again. How adorable.

Suppose Baird did bite us on the arse but he's never went on to greater things than us, relegated last season and has signed for Thistle this season. He bloomed into a decent first division striker but i think that shows how poor the First Division is rather than him being a good player.

I hope they do well McGinn was superb for Dumbarton going by the fans, got to respect him for wanting to play every week. Think Smith could do with another year of development with us, maybe we could have loaned him out for a few months.

Some might even have part time jobs too, I know some youth players in the past did.

I'm trying to picture myself today earning £100.00 a week. Can you actually survive on that assuming the boy has to pay dig money and traveling ezpenses. Then as normal 18 year old you have socialising and cloths to consider. So looking at the bigger picture it seems to me Saints were not bothered one way or another if he signed so would have a feeling of I'm not wanted here. £100.00 is shocking to be honest.

If's he's not that tall then I don't think he'll make it.

The cloths thing shouldn't be an issue you can get 20 micro fibre cloths in Poundland for well a pound.

As someone else has pointed out, most students probably get less money for learning their "trade". Most of them seem to get part-time jobs to supplement paying for their clothes, food, accomodation, social life etc.

A fuss over nothing really.

A normal 18 year old will be getting less money to go to college or uni, and most of that will be in loans. They will work on top of that to have some cash. It's not job its an education. The price seems fair and they don't need to accept it if it isnt for them, which he hasn't.

If someone gave me £120 a week to play football at 18 I'd have been f**king delighted. Getting paid to do something you enjoy, and that millions dream of doing?

As for having £120 "to live on", I'd expect he's living with his parents, so he's basically got a £120 a week to go out and play with. Plenty of time to make more money if you're good enough.

If he doesn't like it he can do one.
