antrin
Not to plunge the forum into a Hammerby-esque doom-laden darkness, but... ...If that benign and beautifully warm N. Atlantic Drift/Gulf Stream stops or simply falters, then Scottish temperatures will be plunged into another mini Ice Age. Scotland owes its climate to that magnificent current pumping around the world (as does Norway's ports staying ice free in Winters). I paraphrase, but you'll get the gist... Mini Ice Ages have happened at least 23 times in the past. That is a reason we have such huge peat reserves - every mini ice age wipes out all the trees and other plant life. Of those 23, 5 have been agreed as Heinrich Events (named after the scientist who posited the idea) that: A vast freshwater sea (sitting roon aboot where Hudson Bay, the Prairies, Minnesota etc are) was held in check to the north by giant icefields. During periods of warming, the ice melted and the fresh waters flooded out changing the saltiness of the Atlantic Drift, which depends on his movement around the world (as far reaching as the Pacific) on a combination of the temperature of the seas and its salinity.. Heinrich believed that the events named after him had happened about 13 times. Freshwater had stopped that warm flow to the north of Scotland and caused mini ice ages. His data was reviewed by others, and after some back and forth, it is now accepted that there have been at least 5 such events. The melting of the ice sheets in Greenland (and that of North Pole ice in general) are inundating the Atlantic with fresh water. So this is not simply a mad scientist writing for the Grauniad, this an increasingly likely genuine scenario. Have a nice night! I believe I mentioned this before. About 5 years ago, but I think we got away with it. That time. Edited January 7, 2020 by antrin

Bud the Baker
The game must be just about up, even BJ announcing changes to UK policy at UK/Africa summit. Quote Johnson says UK will stop using overseas aid to support coal mining or coal power plants A decade ago we were the one of the most carbon-heavy nations in Europe. Today we’re a world leader in offshore. We regularly generate more of our electricity from renewables than from fossil fuels. And we have almost entirely weaned ourselves off coal. But there’s no point in the UK reducing the amount of coal we burn if we then trundle over to Africa and line our pockets by encouraging African states to use more of it. We will breathe the same air, we live beneath the same sky, we all suffer when carbon emissions rise and the planet warms. @shull So from today the British government will no longer provide any new direct official development assistance [ie, overseas aid], investment, export, credit or trade promotion for thermal coal mining coal or coal power plants overseas. To put it simply, not another penny of UK taxpayers money will be directly invested in digging up coal or burning it for electricity. And instead we are going to focus on supporting the transition to lower and zero carbon alternatives.
