The Jim Goodwin Thread

Recommended Posts

The very fact that Dundee Utd highlighted their witch hunt of Jim Goodwin on their web site, speaks volumes on them as a club. f**king hypocrites with no class. No respect for Mc Namara or the chairman who is a wanker.

More faces that the town hall clock.

There is no cost to appeal for these incidenst, but they also dont need to go through the full appeal process so unlikely it would have delayed anything.

The appeal hearing was scheduled for Friday the 3rd therefore he would have made the Killie game

Is it not the case though, that he could of ended up with double the punishment if he appealed and was found guilty?

The correct action has been taken (eventually), take it on the chin and move on.

Jim Goodwin is an idiot at times and deserves the 2 game ban and luckily for us it was not picked up the referee during the game. Goodwin had clearly won the ball and had no need to make any contact with the United player never mind the intended smashing off his arm into his face. On his day Goodwin is an asset to the side but has a habit of making daft ill throughout tackles/challenges like he did against United. There is one thing going in hard and fair but doing what he did with the intent is not acceptable and I can't think why anyone would defend him on this one instance alone.

Not liking how United have dealt with it but that's their problem and shows mcnamara and his club are so two faced.

I like Jim Goodwin and want to see him do well and have ni agenda against him.. He needs another quiet word in the ear from the management team as he is paid to play well for the club not spend a month of the season or more in the stand.

Play hard and fair but within the laws of the game.

The ban was always going to come after the media furore.

Dundee Utd's comments on being victims of increased retrospective scrutiny are enlightening to put it mildly.

Maintaining the moral high ground and protecting the integrity of the club are excellent strategies with the statement succinctly but with dignity pointing the finger squarely back at Dundee Utd. I can only assume the comments made about Danny feeling Jim was unfairly being targeted were covered by the statement.

Adds some spice to the Cup tie, but will be a tough two games without our Captain.

On the moral high ground question, have we stopped announcing the away support numbers? Have always thought that and a clap were a nice touch (although I know many disagree).

ETA: Ultimately though it was a stupid thing to do. Jim now needs to take the medicine, of the ban, and come back with a point to prove in the right way. The manager has backed him whilst voicing his discontent and the club have rightly shown indignation at the portrayal of the incident without for a second condoning his actions. Sound backing of our captain publicly, with the onus now back on him to reward the faith shown.

DUFC have shown a lack of class, but don't think for a minute that the TV pundits wouldn't have picked this one apart even if there were no comment from united. the tv shows feast on this kind of incident and Goodwin has previous, he picked up a ban for the sly punch on the motherwell player a year or two ago. By his own actions, he is now someone that the media look to scrutinise.

Best we can do is accept this fair ban and hope the club stand by Goodwin in public whilst filleting him behind closed doors

DL said, "We know the qualities that Jim has, we know the demons that Jim Goodwin has, and that is just part of the nature of his game" bangin.gif

Danny has hung Goodie out to dry. In light of the methods used by DU the club should have highlighted the other "missed" incidents in the game.

Fair's, fair, Or should that be Unfair's, fair and all that?

Don't know if this has been posted before.

DUNDEE UNITED chairman Stephen Thompson has demanded a review of SFA compliance officer Vincent Lunny’s regime.

The Tannadice chief has made the call in the wake of the three-game ban dished out to Gavin Gunning.

The United defender was suspended by the SFA on Thursday after TV footage captured him kicking Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk. That led to Thompson issuing a heat-of-the-moment ban on the BBC and STV – a decision he has now rescinded.

But the United chief is still incensed at what he sees as a flawed disciplinary process.

And he revealed his horror at being asked to submit a tit-for-tat complaint against two Celtic players for review after last week’s clash which he worries could open a can of worms for the SFA and turn the system into a snitches charter.

Thompson, a respected member of the SPFL board, spoke to MailSport to clarify his midweek anger.

And he insists if trial by TV is to continue, then Lunny must watch all 90 minutes of every game to provide consistency and justice. He said: “Our annoyance is not over Gavin’s ban. If a player does something wrong, he deserves his punishment.

“It’s not about Gavin’s guilt, it’s about the process by which it was established.

“There were two other incidents in the game we felt were worthy of being looked at but which weren’t highlighted on TV. But when we spoke to the SFA we were told that if we wanted to report them, they would be considered.

“I wouldn’t do that. That’s where the whole system is fundamentally wrong.

“It’s not the clubs’ job to start highlighting incidents of player discipline from other clubs – that’s what we have match officials and supervisors for.

“That’s really wrong. It opens a can of worms.

“What happens if we’re playing club X next week and we see something on TV from their game at the weekend that hasn’t been highlighted? We report it and that gets the player banned? That’s totally and utterly wrong.

“It’s up to authorities to handle these thing properly.”

Thompson and United boss Jackie McNamara were angered Gunning’s off-the-ball kick at Van Dijk was singled out in the BBC Scotland highlights package.

But Thompson stressed: “It’s not that we didn’t think our player was in the wrong but the fact there were other incidents that weren’t included.

“From what I can gather a referees’ assessor, who hadn’t been at the game, saw it on TV and reported it to Mr Lunny.

“If you’re going to do that, then they should be watching all 90 minutes of every game they have footage from.

“Otherwise how can you be consistent and independent?

“What happens, though, is whoever’s editing the television highlights package is setting the agenda for what Mr Lunny will or won’t act upon.

“They may be right to highlight issues – but what gets left out? They only have a certain time to show a game so they have to judge what stays and what goes.

“It’s about fairness for everyone. United are not the only club who feels this way – other people have contacted me to say they feel the same.”

Thompson feels he has enough backing to formally call for a review of the system.

He said: “The system is better than it was before. It was abused when clubs appealed decisions so a player could play in a game the following weekend, because they knew it would take longer for the appeal to be heard.

“I used to sit on the disciplinary committee and it could be weeks before some cases were heard.

“So it’s much better in that respect. This isn’t criticism for the sake of it.

“But it’s about how they decide what’s reviewed. Any member of the public can phone up. Where does that end?

“I’m a member of the SPFL board and it’s time to ask that the system here is reviewed.

“It has been improved but it’s clear there are flaws.

“When anyone can phone up and report a player, and we were told we could do so as long as it was in by a certain time, that ruins fair play and everything you encourage in football.

“Mr Lunny said when he joined he wanted to make the SFA

more transparent but I’d have to ask if it is more transparent now than it was?”

Meanwhile, Thompson admits he was wrong to ban the Beeb and STV from Tannadice interviews and says he’ll be lifting it with immediate effect.

He said: “That was a heat-of-the-moment reaction and rescinding it is the right thing to do.

“Bans don’t achieve anything and it was a mistake as it was hitting the messenger and missing the point of the message.”

Oh Dear !
