The Jim Goodwin Thread

In 1986 Aber was redcarded 3 times in one game -

With Dundee United and its fans wetting their knickers so much on the Jim Goodwin affair, perhaps a wee reprise of an updated Aber song could be on the cards for whenever we play Utd

Don't know if this has been posted before.

DUNDEE UNITED chairman Stephen Thompson has demanded a review of SFA compliance officer Vincent Lunny’s regime.

The Tannadice chief has made the call in the wake of the three-game ban dished out to Gavin Gunning.

The United defender was suspended by the SFA on Thursday after TV footage captured him kicking Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk. That led to Thompson issuing a heat-of-the-moment ban on the BBC and STV – a decision he has now rescinded.

But the United chief is still incensed at what he sees as a flawed disciplinary process.

And he revealed his horror at being asked to submit a tit-for-tat complaint against two Celtic players for review after last week’s clash which he worries could open a can of worms for the SFA and turn the system into a snitches charter.

Thompson, a respected member of the SPFL board, spoke to MailSport to clarify his midweek anger.

And he insists if trial by TV is to continue, then Lunny must watch all 90 minutes of every game to provide consistency and justice. He said: “Our annoyance is not over Gavin’s ban. If a player does something wrong, he deserves his punishment.

“It’s not about Gavin’s guilt, it’s about the process by which it was established.

“There were two other incidents in the game we felt were worthy of being looked at but which weren’t highlighted on TV. But when we spoke to the SFA we were told that if we wanted to report them, they would be considered.

“I wouldn’t do that. That’s where the whole system is fundamentally wrong.

“It’s not the clubs’ job to start highlighting incidents of player discipline from other clubs – that’s what we have match officials and supervisors for.

“That’s really wrong. It opens a can of worms.

“What happens if we’re playing club X next week and we see something on TV from their game at the weekend that hasn’t been highlighted? We report it and that gets the player banned? That’s totally and utterly wrong.

“It’s up to authorities to handle these thing properly.”

Thompson and United boss Jackie McNamara were angered Gunning’s off-the-ball kick at Van Dijk was singled out in the BBC Scotland highlights package.

But Thompson stressed: “It’s not that we didn’t think our player was in the wrong but the fact there were other incidents that weren’t included.

“From what I can gather a referees’ assessor, who hadn’t been at the game, saw it on TV and reported it to Mr Lunny.

“If you’re going to do that, then they should be watching all 90 minutes of every game they have footage from.

“Otherwise how can you be consistent and independent?

“What happens, though, is whoever’s editing the television highlights package is setting the agenda for what Mr Lunny will or won’t act upon.

“They may be right to highlight issues – but what gets left out? They only have a certain time to show a game so they have to judge what stays and what goes.

“It’s about fairness for everyone. United are not the only club who feels this way – other people have contacted me to say they feel the same.”

Thompson feels he has enough backing to formally call for a review of the system.

He said: “The system is better than it was before. It was abused when clubs appealed decisions so a player could play in a game the following weekend, because they knew it would take longer for the appeal to be heard.

“I used to sit on the disciplinary committee and it could be weeks before some cases were heard.

“So it’s much better in that respect. This isn’t criticism for the sake of it.

“But it’s about how they decide what’s reviewed. Any member of the public can phone up. Where does that end?

“I’m a member of the SPFL board and it’s time to ask that the system here is reviewed.

“It has been improved but it’s clear there are flaws.

“When anyone can phone up and report a player, and we were told we could do so as long as it was in by a certain time, that ruins fair play and everything you encourage in football.

“Mr Lunny said when he joined he wanted to make the SFA

more transparent but I’d have to ask if it is more transparent now than it was?”

Meanwhile, Thompson admits he was wrong to ban the Beeb and STV from Tannadice interviews and says he’ll be lifting it with immediate effect.

He said: “That was a heat-of-the-moment reaction and rescinding it is the right thing to do.

“Bans don’t achieve anything and it was a mistake as it was hitting the messenger and missing the point of the message.”

On another night, Stephen Thompson would have ended as a spunk-stain on the pants of a shopkeeper's wife. he has done nothing of note in this world and we should treat his comments with all of the credit that he deserves

If he

If he's not getting a new deal we should be looking to replace him this window !

He's a good guy but he's too slow, too rash and often feels he's a deep lying playmaker by trying raking 50 yard passes.

We have a few good creative midfielders, whoever plays the Goodwin role just needs to help out the defence and play the simple ball to the other midfielders.

He got booked for it . Does that mean he cannot now be cited ?

Checked on the SFA website, as usual ,clear as Mud.

1. The Compliance Officer reviews any incidents brought to his attention by whatever means and has until 3 pm on the second working day after a match (ie Tuesday if it’s a weekend match) to deliver a Notice of Complaint, including supporting evidence, to the player involved.

So if we were all to e-mail the SFA (fao compliance officer) registering our complaint about an elbowing incident which we feel went "under-punished" would he be forced to act & would The DUFC Chairman be happy ?

And nothing about the Naismith penalty incident either.

It's because of the unique way you, the licence fee payer, funds the BBC...

It was outside the box but he looked like he did get his heels clipped.

We missed someone in the Goody role today. Like Billyg says, we should go out and sign someone who is experienced at this role in the window.

Absolutely agree. No team should take the field without a spoiler at the base of midfield. Always the most under-rated players by people who don't know football; always the first name on my imaginary team sheets.

Thing is, I always imagine there'd be plenty of these kind of guys - cheap, experienced and happy to play back-up - at, say, (Scottish) Championship level. We don't need young and promising, we need old and cynical. IMO.
