Paisley Charity Cup

The Paisley Charity Cup was first competed for in 1882-83, when St.Mirren reached the final only to lose 0-6 to Paisley Athletic. It was not until 1887 that Saints first got their name on the trophy, when they defeated Thornliebank 5-1 at Westmarch on the 28th May. The victorious team was:-
Cameron, Maxwell, McHardie, Hutchison, Cheyne, Graham, Harper, Fairlie, Morton, Bain, Brown.
Fairlie and Morton both scored two goals.
Saints had several more successes during the following years; one of the most pleasing was a 10-0 thrashing of rivals Abercorn in 1894. By the turn of the century, St.Mirren and Abercorn were the only senior clubs remaining in the town, so Arthurlie and Johnstone were invited to compete in the competition. With the demise of Abercorn in 1920, it was decided that the competition should be played as a one off match between Saints and invited opposition. Over the years teams such as Third Lanark, Clyde, Partick Thistle, Morton, Kilmarnock and East Fife along with English teams like Manchester City, Leicester City, Barnsley and Preston North End have provided the opposition. Saints have won the trophy outright on 39 occasions and have drawn on a further six.
The final year of competition was in 1967 and the trophy now resides in the Love Street Boardroom.

Rob,

I just had a response from a guy called David at St Mirren history, below is his reply. Just to let you know I have halved the buy it now price as there is not a mystery connection to the medal now, offers will be considered around £400 as it is still a good medal because of James Walls' connection to both clubs.

HI,

I believe that the medal was indeed presented to James 'Fister' Walls as you say, however it was as a winner he gained it.

At the time he was a St Mirren player having joined from Bathgate in 1916.

The match in question was between Saints and Abercorn and Saints won 3-0 with James Logan netting all three goals. Unfortunately I do not have dates or any further info about the match.

Walls left Saints for Ibrox at the end of that season

That is a great piece of memorabilia. Would you have any objection to me using the images on the website in the Charity cup section.

I hope this helps your search.

David.

I'm kind of intrigued as to how he got the nickname 'fister'.

My grandfather was a professional footballer back in them there days. He played 5 a side at international level or so I was told. I'm told in them days they played with 5 players on a full size pitch. and that the games attracted crowds of similar size to 11 a side.
