New Years Honours List.

I don't understand some of the celebrity awards but there's a great deal of value in the honours system, especially when it comes to recognising the hard work of some very ordinary people.

I was delighted to see Margaret Mary Aspinall and Trevor Hicks on the list. It's hugely significant that possibly for the first time the UK establishment has recognised those around the Hillsborough Disaster. And although everyone knows all about Mary Peters and Steve Cram, it's great to see them being rewarded for the amount of work that they do in their own local communities enthusing kids and adults alike to get involved in sport.

And on a more personal note it's great to see Briget McConnell awarded for her work. The establishment obviously waited to ensure that the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow weren't an unmitigated disaster, but she deserved recognition for being leader of the initial team of five who did all the work winning the bid for Glasgow. All to often their work gets pushed aside while some council leader steals all the credit during the event, but it's really nice to see this ex Wishaw resident getting the recognition she deserves.
