bluto
Either is CORRECT. Neither is wrong. I think you've gone and went senile! Harrumph. Highly debatable: it's mostly considered ignorant, obscure, dialect and ancient practice. But, as all four suit you. Wire in.

stlucifer
Harrumph. Highly debatable: it's mostly considered ignorant, obscure, dialect and ancient practice. But, as all four suit you. Wire in. Mostly being? You I guess. While I don't pretend to be a saint it is surely presumptious of you to suppose something is obscure and that I am ignorant simply because I don't agree with your narrow take on the English language. After all. Surely, by definition, every form of English is either ancient or dialect? Edited February 5, 2015 by stlucifer

After all. Surely, by definition, every form of English is either ancient or dialect?Cos Ah'm no presumptuous.... I usually give the benefit of the doubt and go check other sources. Go look for yourself. I wisnae being narrow or casting aspersions. Such a use is generally regarded in that way. "have went" seems to be a hangover from the days when the past tense of wander was "went" not as we now use "wandered". The past tense of go is "gone", and always has been. Apparently, it has persisted in some regions, but is deemed not quite 'right'. ie. It shows a lack of understanding of the generally accepted best use of our language. I think it's clumsy and wrong. I'm not the judge, but others will judge... So I was just saying.... I bet no Buddie really needed to know this wonderful background, apart from a few sad, kindred souls.
