pozbaird
Neil Young on Sunday. Wanted to catch him before he dies. Why, is he jumping off the Hydro roof?
Stu
Saw The View at the imaginatively named The Venue in Dumfries last night. Started off great, a bit crap in the middle then reasonable at the end. Not as good as when I saw them at the Wickerman, maybe being shattered meant I didn't enjoy it as much. Lord Pityme
That's it for me. Confirmed. I've seen Led Zeppelin, The Who, U2, Queen in their pomp. AC/DC with Bon Scott, and REM in a sweaty packed Barrowlands. Elvis Costello is a genius and in their day Crowded House had the crowd in the palm of their hand.... but.... after being at Hampden last night... Bruce Springsteen is THE greatest live performer I will ever get to see in my lifetime, and the E Street Band are simply a force of nature. As I say, personally speaking, IMHO and all that.... The Boss is simply the best. Shock 'In agreement' alert..! The Boss and the E Street band knocked it out of the park last night. Like that he name checked Viagra as the E Street Band's stimulant of choice these days.

The Boss is simply the best. I've done the Festival and Football Ground thing and was always a little disappointed I reckon the best place to hear music is in a club or music hall. I saw Springsteen twice, at The Playhouse in Edinburgh on The River Tour and at St. James Park, Newcastle for Born in the USA and the first was much better and IIRC much cheaper. I think back in the day when prices were a bit more reasonable it was worth the sacrifice but nowadays when the price of tickets for these big events are steep it's not for me. *************** ............and don't get me started about the price of concerts - I started going to gigs in the late '70's my first was Rockpile (Dave Edmunds &Nick Lowe - still a band I hold in fond regard) and remember being shocked when prices started to reach £10 in the early '80's. In those days most of the folk going to the gigs I went to were in school/college or starting jobs and maybe not earning too much but nowadays I tend to go with guys I work with all of whom have grown up children so there's much more disposable income than there was back in the day and ticket prices have swelled to meet that. Joe Bonnemassa is a case in point I remember the first coupla times I saw him the price was in the £10-15 region (definitely under a score) but tickets for his current tour which is being marketed a Tribute to Clapton, Beck & Page were £60 and above- for a Solid Silver Sixties show! ******************* If I ever start to make posts which rant and veer well off-topic, just shoot me. pozbaird
Springsteen makes a stadium sized gig feel intimate.Everyone gets right into it, but I prefer more 'manageable' gigs too. To be fair, I saw Robbie Williams once or twice in stadiums when he was riding high, and that boy also had the knack of pulling off a huge stadium gig with aplomb. Then he disappeared up his own arse. Genesis are one example of a band I saw in both an intimate and a stadium setting. Brilliant at the Apollo, shite in a big stadium. U2 can also do the big stadium thing if they screw the nut, tell Bono to shut the fcuk up, and concentrate on the music rather than big lemons or stages like giant spiders... First time I saw U2 though?... Strathclyde University, 1980, ticket price... £1.75.
Thorizaar
I was at this 23 years ago today. A great example of nailing it in a stadium gig. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bdYFfOWGWfA

The Who FB page posted a billboard for a festival they headlined in 1965 with the Kinks and around half a dozen other bands (half of which I'd heard of). Tickets were £1, equivalent to £17.50 today. Tickets for Neil Young tonight were £75 each including booking fee...Edited for fat fingers. Edited June 5, 2016 by salmonbuddie
Bud the Baker
I was at this 23 years ago today. A great example of nailing it in a stadium gig. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bdYFfOWGWfA I suppose it varies according to taste and the band/performers ability to hold an audience of that size - possibly Freddie Mercury and Queen were the best at that. Iron Maiden seem to be able to do it too. One band whose longevity as a touring outfit puzzles me is the Stones (have they called it a day yet?) whom I saw at the Apollo in 81ish and for me they were going through the motions even then so I dread to think what they're like now. I suppose you're always wondering if tonight's the night Keef is going to peg it. Genesis are one example of a band I saw in both an intimate and a stadium setting. Brilliant at the Apollo, shite in a big stadium. I'd agree Phil Collins just can't carry it off in big arenas. It's interesting to compare the vocals on the Seconds Out album with the Live in Europe shows. He's putting a lot more effort into his singing but certainly as far as the old numbers go he's spoiling them and he makes an absolute pigs ear of Afterglow. I reckon they've got one big moneyspinning tour left (Banks/Collins/Rutherford) but I won't be there.
pozbaird
I've been going to gigs since Slade at the Apollo in 1974. Been very lucky to have rarely seen a poor live band or had a show blown out. Honourable exception is Bad Company at the Apollo on their 'Desolation Angels' tour in the early 1980s. Complete and utter shite, and none of the cnuts clearly gave a flying fcuk. Worst headline act I ever saw. Fcuk Bad Company.
davidg
Was meant to be at Springsteen and Neil Young with my dad but he's recovering from an op so couldn't make it. Heard The Boss was brilliant, he's back next year. Next up for me is Pharrell and the Mobos.
pozbaird
Was meant to be at Springsteen and Neil Young with my dad but he's recovering from an op so couldn't make it. Heard The Boss was brilliant, he's back next year. Next up for me is Pharrell and the Mobos. He was indeed brilliant. Best Springsteen gig I've been to. 35 song set... When you look at the setlists on his website, and tonight's Wembley setlist just appeared 24 mins ago on 'setlistfm' website - it's just astounding the variance from night to night, and the songs played at the drop of a hat as he plucks songs requested by fans holding up the titles on signs and hand-painted cards. Tonight's Wembley show features at least three songs making their debuts on this mammoth tour. The Glasgow setlist was belting... except for one song 'Sandy'. I don't like that song at all - was my moment to make a dash for the lavvy! You can't make a lavvy trip during Born To Run - Thunder Road - Dancing In The Dark - Glory Days - Badlands.... In my opinion, Springsteen is at the height of his live powers - at 66 years of age. Three and a half hour sets, no break for an interval, non-stop. He works the stage and the platforms leading from them too. No standing in front of the microphone like Noel Gallagher for our Bruce. God bless his cotton socks, hope he keeps rockin' on into his 70s and beyond. Also, he still releases relevant and meaningful new material. His more modern stuff is amongst my all-time favourites... Wrecking Ball, Radio Nowhere, American Skin (41 Shots).... Brooooooocccceeeeeeee!
Bud the Baker
Going to see NWOBHM stalwarts Diamond Head at the O2 in Sauchieall St. in October.
