Alan Gow - The Forgotten Man

Recommended Posts

Gow is an enigma. There is a player there but he has never really shown any consistency throughout his career. He has ability but appears to lack confidence. At least he is capable of scoring goals, when fit.

As I have posted elsewhere Gow is not and never was a prolific striker except maybe with Airdie in the Second Division where he managed to score 11 goals one season. Mehmet's record is far superior and some do not not rate him as a striker.

Mehmet's role wasn't as an out and out striker anyway.

He was always the second striker (or possibly a no.10 in today's tactics) who supported the main striker - whether that be John Sutton, Craig Dargo or Michael Higdon. His task was to chase down the channels, hold the ball up, track back, try and win possession. He also played in a very defensive set up in a side that was always battling to stay in the top flight.

Mehmet's goalscoring record, in light of all this, was actually very good.

At a lower level, if we could add Mehmet's goals, along with the assists he will create for his partner, he would improve the side IMO.

On top of this, unlike Gow, he rarely missed a match through injury.

Any comparisons with Alan Gow are just stupid.

Mehmet's goalscoring record was vastly inflated by cup goals v minnows. I'm sick of listing it but suffice to say he scored around 20 league goals in 5 seasons. Mediocre at best.
