New Training Ground?

Recommended Posts

It seems Renfrewshire Council are set to redevelop St James' playing fields and turn it into a sports village of excellence (or similar buzz words) which "will provide a centre of excellence for the elite athletes at St Mirren and UWS and for the wider public".

Wonder what that would mean for Ralston?

I don't think this development is going to be at St James playing fields, think the Record have that wrong?

Definitely St James. And according to the wee bit on the front of the PDE (it's their story, all the locals use the Record website now) Saints and UWS are part funding this development. Dunno where we're finding the cash for that from - sale of the land near the ground maybe?

EDIT: I'll caveat that by adding the article says the new sports village will be near the new park which is planned for St James so could be elsewhere.

While this is obviously a good thing to do, I'd have thought they could find better things to spend that much money on!

Perhaps the area of St James where the pitches have been removed, still quite a size.

Apologies, you are correct on that one (my get-out clause being the bit in the PDE that said it would be near St James).

From the council's website

The council’s budget, which was set today, outlined proposals for a new landscaped town park - with outdoors events space, on the site of the current St James’ playing fields.

The Council will also take forward a landmark proposal to deliver a £15 million regional sports village in Ferguslie with state-of-the-art facilities for local people and elite athletes. The project will be developed in partnership with The University of the West of Scotland (UWS), and St Mirren FC, with the council pledging £7.5m towards the joint costs of both Paisley north-west projects.

IS this going to be based at the current sports centre?

SNP voted against it

The council's website says the budget was agreed and the sports village and St James stuff was part of it. It looks like Labour have a majority administration in Renfrewshire (as opposed to a minority one in Dumfries and Galloway) so assuming they all turned up and voted for it, how the SNP or anyone else voted is irrelevant.

Just my understanding of things. Not trying to get political!

you are correct but it would be nice to support Paisleys club, and Renfrewshire in general.

Can i take that as a guarantee that any councilors of the party you are a member of, will now not vote against anything that any Paisley sports clubs request?

Ah when thieves fall out. It would be nice if either or both of Scotland's big two parties actually stood up for working people and refused to implement Tory austerity cuts! Instead they both say a big boy done it and ran away! The SNP blame the Tories and then make their cuts at Holyrood Labour blame the SNP and make the cuts at local level. Both think the answer is for working people to pay for austerity by taxing the working class more whether by a 1p increase on income tax or increases in council tax bandings. One's as bad as the other and both do the Tories dirty work. I'm voting TUSC for socialism.

Do you mean like when the planning permission for the new stadium was passed?

I have totally lost track on who the good guys and bad guys are in this thread but from memory the SNP councillors voted for the stadium and supermarket and were joined by a few rebel Labour councillors. One of the Labour councillors who voted against it is now the provost.

More about the sports village plans here: http://news.stv.tv/west-central/1345225-plans-for-15m-sports-village-to-help-revamp-deprived-area/

Not sure if the £7.5million from the council is towards the cost of the £15million sports village or the combined cost of that and the park at St James. Either way it's a fair whack of cash for UWS and Saints to come up with. Not to worry though as according to Tony we'll have a £10million turnover and be Premier League champions by 2020
