How much do you think Mallan is worth?

I think he is a very good young talent and I believe that he has a couple of years left on his contract. Kenny and John have both done really well since leaving us so we have a bit of a pedigree now when it comes to developing young players. I would be looking for a bit more than we got for Kenny particularly if we can get some interest from English clubs. So I would be tempted by any offer over £300,000. What do you think Mallen is worth?

I'd say Mallan has shown much more promise/potential at his age than either McGinn or McLean did.

Its a close call. John McGinn looked really good when he first broke through into the first team. He always seemed to have something about him. A sell on clause is also worth adding to any sale of these young guys as the BoD did with Hibs.

Dundee want Mallan too.

I would like Messi but I think both me and Dundee have zero chance of getting who we want.

Mallan is contracted with us until the summer of 2018. His development fee alone is a figure Dundee could not afford. Given a good season this season and possible promotion I reckon we are sitting on a gold mine and if all else fails we get a development fee of around £150,000 (pure speculation but based on McGinn' and Mclean's fees) and another two seasons of the wee man (assuming he stays fit and continues to improve which I think he will under Rae).

I think he is more well rounded than McGinn. McGinn could run with the ball but his shooting was pretty poor and passing was nothing special in comparison to Mallan's. Also, Mallan was starting to show a bit more defensively in the tail end of the season. However, you could argue Mallan has been playing at a lower level than our previous players have.

Let's hope he doesn't have a shocker of a second full season like McGinn did.

I guess the difference is, and no offence meant to John, but players like John are not too rare. Whereas how many teenage central midfielders have a goal scoring record like Stevie Mallan?

Look at all the players Dundee Utd produced and sold, Stewart Armstrong for example, had a scoring record of 18 goals in 126 league games, Stevie has 15 goals in 56. Also compare him to Hibs/Celtics Liam Henderson, who is the same age, 10 goals in 59 (League games only, his record is worse if you add in cup games).

I'm not saying Mallan is worth millions, but based on his goal record above the Dundee offer of £60k is insulting. FFS we paid about £30k for Gareth Wardlaw.......

Edited to add: I have realised he has just turned 20

The circumstances of the sell-on were a bit different than usual insomuch McGinn was out of contract and could sign for anyone but we were due a substantial development fee which put many clubs off. If no-one paid up we could have gone to a tribunal or we kept him out the game. Hibs paid less that what he was worth but we got some development fee and a sell-on clause. Its not uncommon but not the norm to have a sell-on clause. Personally I would just take the £2M up front :)

Take Mallan's first part-season in the Premiership - 5 goals and 5 assists in 24 starts. You'd struggle to find 18 year old strikers with that return, never mind a midfielder. Carried on where he left off, albeit a lower level, this season.

Check McLean and McGinn's first 24 starts - nowhere near the impact of Mallan. 3 goals and 1 assist for McLean, 1 and 1 for McGinn, in the same league.

Mallan has kicked on big time this season just ended, with 15 goals and 5 assists from midfield, in 38 starts, all competitions. Still had people towards the end of the season complaining he didn't contribute enough apart from the goals and assists...

That's essentially what I was trying to get across but you did a much better job :)

Spot on. I would be surprised if Mallan goes on to achieve less than Mclsan and McGinn. Won't stop our fans getting on his back though.

What the f**k is this pish about Mallan got to do with Shankland.

Going off topic is standard procedure on all threads on here. Surely you have realised that? We may revert back to Shankland then again we may drift into who was better at the same age - Mallan, McGinn or Mclean - oh, done that. Well how about is Mallan the best free kick specialist you have seen or was it Gunni (at least that brings a forward into the discussion ) :) .

And add to the mix Munoz mentioned in this thread that Shankland may join Saints permanently with a player and cash going up to Aberdeen. Drew put out Mallen as a suggestion so kind of hangs together and the rest is history.

Would he get a start with Sutton now signed up as No 1 striker? He's too similar to Sutton. Aberdeen might prefer him to go to the likes of Dunfermline or bottom end of Spl rather than warm our bench.

Warm our bench? Behave yourself ffs.

Shankland would start ahead both Sutton and Clarkson going by end of season form, Shanks is Rae's top priority signing and there has been budget set aside for him to come back.

Is that from the same source that told you Sutton was going elsewhere?
