Callum Gilhooley
its still very early Days in the close season but i`ve got to say, i feel a strange confidence in Mr Raes approach.
nosferatu
Many of Sutton's goals came as a result of him latching onto long balls down the middle. Edited June 7, 2016 by nosferatu
saltcoatsbuddie
john plays as a big guy who holds the ball up and brings others into play ,also chipping in with a few himself but is getting on a bit ,,,,did we not have a number 9 like that in our team last season that mr rae didn't play ,,bit confusing

Tommy
If he does sign tomorrow, that will be 2 players Rae has signed this week with no connection to The Rangers
pod
Probably no announcement yet as he's still negotiating a release fee from his club.

Sutton is 5 years younger than Thommo (the same age as when Thommo first signed for us) and I'm sure he will be hungry to do well for us after not getting many games in a St Johnstone team who finished 4th in the SPL and scored on his debut with the Fakes, having scored 34 goals in the previous 2 seasons at Motherwell. Sutton is a goalscorer, averaging not much worse than 1 goal every 2 games. Clarkson is not a great goalscorer. He averages 1 in 5 in his career, his hot streak at Dundee was a fluke. He is more of a creator. They are both very good signings.
Mr Zo
It will be like Basher and Yardley up front with Callum Gallagher for Mendes on the wings. Hope we sign Sutton as he will score goals for us in this league with the right kind of service. As a another former player has he signed up to the buythebuds campaign yet? ;-)
saintnextlifetime
Personally , I will never forget what John did for us on 12/05/07 , one of my favourite games of all time. . He also missed a cracking header against us in the League Cup final , it smashed into the upright. . There's only one John Sutton. . . Thommo only dropped out the starting XI when Rae came in and soon realised that he wasn't even good for coming off the bench or being trusted to do a proper warm up. Sutton averages about 12 goals a season and that average includes a few seasons where he was breaking into professional football and not getting much game time and includes last season where he made a total of 10 appearances (mostly as a sub) at St Johnstone. Dare
Think Sutton will score goals for us at this level. Also very good at holding the ball up and bringing others into the play - excellent signing for us. Edited June 7, 2016 by Dare

There will be a pool of available strikers clearly able to get a gig in England or with Sellik / Sevco / Aberdeen / Hearts even? There may even be some who the likes of Hibs and Dundee United could trump us in wages offered, and there will be some available strikers that the likes of St Mirren / Falkirk / Morton etc could look at realistically signing. Then after that you are looking at your own youth ranks, taking a punt on free transfers from down South, unknown Johnny Foreigners, or some 'Old Firm loanee kids'. I honestly don't know where Alex Rae is supposed to do his shopping if he doesn't shop in SuttonLand.

Lanarkshire_Bud
Lovely stuff. Not quite sure of the system Rae has in mind signing both Clarkson and Sutton. Neither is remotely pacey so bringing a forward thinking player with some decent pace would leave me very happy with ur attack heading in to the new season. Another center half now please. Isle Of Bute Saint
Trying to work out why this has not been confirmed anywhere ? Would like to think we can beat Raith Rovers and Ayr United on wages though Ayr are owned by a Canadian multi millionaire.
Magic Monkey
The other point I'd make to the naysayers is how would they feel if he signed for Morton? He'd be guaranteed to score against us, for a start...

Although not pacey Sutton always took up good positions and made lots of intelligent runs, Clarkson is probably a better footballer and will drop off as a number 10............with a good passer (Mallan) and some pace a bit wider (Gallgher, Morgan, McAllister, McLear and whoever else) we could be quite exciting moving forward. nosferatu
Exactly, Sutton is a goal scorer not the type who can play the lone striker role. Albeit, he scored 22 league goals in season 13/14 with Motherwell as a lone striker.

We currently have 3 out and out centre halfs. We won't bring in another unless Rae is going to play 3 at the back, if anything he will sign a left back that can play centre half.
