John Sutton Returns

Recommended Posts

john plays as a big guy who holds the ball up and brings others into play ,also chipping in with a few himself but is getting on a bit ,,,,did we not have a number 9 like that in our team last season that mr rae didn't play ,,bit confusing

The big difference being Sutton is 5 years younger and still a few years of his career left, I don't think rae will make the same mistake that murray did and play a big man as a lone striker , need a younger striker to play off him

Perhaps you could suggest we bring Thommo out of retirement at the age of 37/38 and see if he betters last season's total of 1 league goal in the season?

Sutton is 5 years younger than Thommo (the same age as when Thommo first signed for us) and I'm sure he will be hungry to do well for us after not getting many games in a St Johnstone team who finished 4th in the SPL and scored on his debut with the Fakes, having scored 34 goals in the previous 2 seasons at Motherwell.

not suggesting anything bud ,but Sutton was never blessed with pace or running ability when he was 24 so at 33/34 cant see him being quicker or more agile .but you point out thommos scoring record last season while not being played but defend suttons while not being played ,Clarkson scored loads of goals while at dee but couldn't muster much at well or us ,but hey lets sign him as well , so looks like clarky and Sutton next season ,,,cant wait for the goal rush or maybe rae has a rabbit up his sleeve and will bring in some 19 yr old who cant get near his own teams 3rd string to help them out

Oh FFS.

Sutton is a goalscorer, averaging not much worse than 1 goal every 2 games.

Clarkson is not a great goalscorer. He averages 1 in 5 in his career, his hot streak at Dundee was a fluke. He is more of a creator.

They are both very good signings.

It will be like Basher and Yardley up front with Callum Gallagher for Mendes on the wings.

Hope we sign Sutton as he will score goals for us in this league with the right kind of service.

As a another former player has he signed up to the buythebuds campaign yet? ;-)

Don't try to explain, only see's what he wants to see. ????

Thommo was actually played a lot at the start of the season, most weeks for the 90 minutes, most weeks up front on his own while Murray was in charge, and approaching halfway through the season he had 1 league goal... a mince return at this level for a striker. Thommo only dropped out the starting XI when Rae came in and soon realised that he wasn't even good for coming off the bench or being trusted to do a proper warm up.

Sutton averages about 12 goals a season and that average includes a few seasons where he was breaking into professional football and not getting much game time and includes last season where he made a total of 10 appearances (mostly as a sub) at St Johnstone.

So, if we don't sign Sutton, who apparently has less pace and running ability than ever before, and couldn't hack it at the Fakes, and we have re-signed Clarkson who hasn't mustered much, and we frankly do not have the next Marcus Rashford in the Ralston youth ranks just waiting to burst on the scene (and score about five goals and receive a rave review in the papers before being poached by Celtic - because that's exactly what would happen these days), then where does Alex Rae turn to?

There will be a pool of available strikers clearly able to get a gig in England or with Sellik / Sevco / Aberdeen / Hearts even? There may even be some who the likes of Hibs and Dundee United could trump us in wages offered, and there will be some available strikers that the likes of St Mirren / Falkirk / Morton etc could look at realistically signing. Then after that you are looking at your own youth ranks, taking a punt on free transfers from down South, unknown Johnny Foreigners, or some 'Old Firm loanee kids'.

I honestly don't know where Alex Rae is supposed to do his shopping if he doesn't shop in SuttonLand.

Exactly, Sutton is a goal scorer not the type who can play the lone striker role.

Lovely stuff.

Not quite sure of the system Rae has in mind signing both Clarkson and Sutton. Neither is remotely pacey so bringing a forward thinking player with some decent pace would leave me very happy with ur attack heading in to the new season.

Another center half now please.

Although not pacey Sutton always took up good positions and made lots of intelligent runs, Clarkson is probably a better footballer and will drop off as a number 10............with a good passer (Mallan) and some pace a bit wider (Gallgher, Morgan, McAllister, McLear and whoever else) we could be quite exciting moving forward.

We currently have 3 out and out centre halfs. We won't bring in another unless Rae is going to play 3 at the back, if anything he will sign a left back that can play centre half.

With Irvine and Stewart I do not see him signing another left back.
