What the reformat of the Challenge Cup has all been about (as if we did not know) ....

Celtic and Rangers want U20 Colts sides to play in SPFL but their hopes for plan to be in place next season look doomed

THE Glasgow rivals want their Colts sides to progress from their inclusion in this year's IRN-BRU Cup to playing in League Two next season.

CELTIC and Rangers want their development teams to gain entry to the SPFL - and are keen for it to happen as soon as next season.

But Record Sport Online understands the Glasgow rivals are highly unlikely to get their wish next year.

Both clubs have been heartened by their under-20 sides’ involvement in the IRN-BRU Cup this season.

And while they went out before the fourth round, it is understood they are keen for their youths to be involved in the lower reaches of the league on a weekly basis.

Now, according to the Scottish Sun, a formal proposal is being prepared for Celtic and Rangers Colts to be included in a new extended League Two format next season.

But there are so many obstacles in the way to the proposal it's highly unlikely to be in place any time soon.

We understand there's little support for the idea among other SPFL clubs. Under current SPFL rules any change to the bottom division would require 90 per cent approval from Premiership clubs and 75 per cent approval from the 30 teams in the three divisions below.

And with the new pyramid structure offering the opportunity for Highland and Lowland League clubs to win promotion into the SPFL, Celtic and Rangers Colts sides' fast-track into the bottom rung would cause numerous problems.

How their inclusion would affect promotion and relegation and the overall make-up of the bottom tier is also unclear.

It’s not the first time the development sides' entry into the league set-up has been mooted.

Back in 2013 SFL chief executive David Longmuir pushed for their inclusion in the bottom tier of a restructured league.

He said their inclusion would ‘future-proof’ the Scottish game against the big two departing for a regional or European League, at least leaving part of their brand alive at home and preserving the commercial benefits they bring.

It had been thought their inclusion in this year's IRN-BRU Cup would lay the foundations for future. Rangers were knocked out in the second round, going down 3-1 to Stenhousemuir. Celtic progressed to the third round before losing 5-1 to Livingston on Saturday.

All Premiership clubs Under 20 teams took part in this year’s competition, giving their players a taste of competitive football at senior level.

Now Celtic and Rangers look serious about taking that concept a stage further with a permanent place in the SPFL for their youths.

Possibly the worst draw we could have got (depending on your views re. NI and Welsh inclusion)... away tie with little chance of victory :(

...Although I guess there is an outside chance of live TV coverage - as quite a 'big' tie.

Oh well at least everyone that hated the idea of playing a Welsh or Irish team will be delighted.

I cannot remember who the manager was that was interviewed on Sportsound on Saturday but he was asked about the new look Challenge Cup. He was not in favour of the changes especially the inclusion of the Welsh and Northern Irish teams saying that anyone who draws them away from home will make a financial loss.

Just like what happened when we drew Albion Rovers away and drew a crowd of 700 at £10 a head.
