Should a second independence referendum be held tomorrow, just 42 per cent of voters would vote Yes, with 49 per cent of Scots backing No and a further 8 per cent undecided.

I'm sure there's a better poll, with the results just getting finalised this now. That I'd be more inclined like most to think is a truer reflection on independence. [emoji1022]󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Strange that a headline claims that support for the SNP continues to drop, when they've just achieved a record vote share in the constituencies.

There's a very large difference between having the right to hold IndyRef2 (for which today has shown a substantial majority in favour of) and winning IndyRef2 which literally nobody was talking about.

Opinion polls suggest that voters are essentially split 50-50 on the question of whether Scotland should be an independent country.

Unfortunately it was true, but if 1 SNP MSP hadn't won their constituency then it was possible that a SNP MSP would have been elected via the list.

It's better that there was no overall majority for the SNP.

It will help neuter the chance of any potentially damaging legislation getting through.

You have to look at what happened the last time.

I’m also quite happy they’ll be kept in check to an extent by the Greens. As much as I would love Greens to be stronger in Scotland they are still likely to push some very progressive climate policy which is (sadly) what we need far more of in this world.

Another defeat is frankly unthinkable.

The thing is the turn out was 21% down on the last referendum it could go either way  if that was to be the turn out again but I agree we really need to be sure of winning it this time .I just can't for the life of me understand why anyone in Scotland would vote conservative when the guy in charge hates the people and the ground we walk on with a passion that includes them absolutely baffling.

Anyone who pays the slightest attention to any of my posts on this topic will know I’m an avid supporter of Scottish independence. However, the constituency vote share for pro independence parties was still less than 50%. That it not a majority, let alone a substantial majority.

I don't really think you can just go on the constituency vote (49% for pro indy parties) since the SNP was really the only pro indy party standing in constituencies. The regional vote showed a 50.1% vote for pro indy parties. Obviously still not enough to hold an early referendum. Give it a couple of years of Boris with no pandemic to hide behind and we can see where we are.

It's not so much "anyone in Scotland", it's more the people who call themselves "Labour", "left wing" or "socialist" that would "tactically" vote Tory. They seem, to me at least, to be holding the continuence of the UK to be more important than their "truly held" social "beliefs".

Maybe it's because the Labour Party is really only left of centre nowadays because the three main UK parties have all moved right over the last 20 years or so and so have also dragged the "centre" to the right. IMO Labour are now to the right of where the political centre was 20 odd years ago.
