It happened all the time in the 79s and 80s, I played for the "Jocks" against the English a number of times during my spell on trial at Sunderland. And at boys club level we were often split into "Rangers Supporters" v "Celtic Supporters" with guys like me making up the numbers in whatever team was short, What was more impressive at WBA back then was that they had enough black players on their books to make up a team.
