Tommy Posted December 6, 2016 Report Share Posted December 6, 2016 The news today is the manufacturing base of the company is closing within 3 month, This is a company that employed 8000 people when I started in 1971. I have work there for 45 years and what happen today is no surprise. I am happy to go but sad for some of my work mates who are losing their jobs as well as the apprentices. They are only 12 machine man now ( turners) in the department that used to be hundreds in when I started. Like other big companies, industry changes though the years, but the British Government (Tories) being unable to decide what kind of energy that they wanted for power station long term was the final nail. Nuclear, oil, gas or coal ? Lack of decision from them and the downside of the oil industry was the final nail in the coffin of what was 1 of the biggest companies in the west of Scotland. faraway saint Posted December 7, 2016 Report Share Posted December 7, 2016 Started my apprenticeship there from 1975 and stayed there until 1985, was probably some of the best years of my working life. So many great memories, learned some skills that have lasted all my life. A place that instilled many useful working practices, and some not so useful. Made a quick visit back about 14 years ago, walking down Porterfield Road was surprisingly emotional, many memories came flooding back. The place was a shadow of it's former self but still a few people worked there that I had worked with many years before. The biggest disgrace about this whole matter is the fact that the SNP are leading Scotland into a position where we will have to become a net exporter of power. A country as rich as ours in terms of natural resources will be reliant on nuclear power plants south of the border to keep our lights on. And why? Cause the SNP are using their power over panning consent to block any new nuclear power plants being constructed in Scotland - nuclear power plants that would have saved these engineering jobs. My only relationship with that company was that my Grandfather worked for Babcock Wilcox for 50 years before he retired in the 70's. I haven't really followed their various different mergers and splits so I thought it was all still the same company just in different divisions.
