But the gist of the story is that Queens Park have abandoned their amateur status to make signing ex pros easier. They've been paying them a salary of £1 in leau of expenses, and that has brought them into the firing line with HMRC over minimum hourly rates of pay. Many clubs have been kidding themselves on that they are semi professional when in reality they are amateur to the core and paying little more than expenses. Then at the higher level you've got clubs that are kidding on they are full time when the players turn up at 10am and go home at 2pm on training days without any thought ever given to then representing the club in the local community, doing some scouting for the club, or showing any interest in anything other than themselves. Queens Park should never have got themselves into a position where they were paying a £1 per week wage. It's damned stupid and if it's true that the SFA gave them advice that this was acceptable so that it fitted their registration structure, rather than ensuring their structure was robust enough to handle the amateur status of one of Scotlands most historically significant football clubs the heads should roll at Hampden.
