The Lawn Tennis Thread

Wee Emma "pumped" out in the first round.

Last years quite magnificent achievement, and it was remarkable, now a distant memory.

Since then it's been one defeat after another.

She's, seemingly in the Top 10 earners of womens tennis but almost all of that comes from off court earnings.

That will slowly, but surely, disappear with each defeat.

She could do with winning something and soon.

PS her ranking is set to tumble down into the "80's", bang goes easier draws in the near future.

The present title of this thread reminded me of an excellent documentary on the BBC iplayer about Arthur Ashe that I watched recently.

BBC iPlayer - Storyville - Citizen Ashe

I realised he was a great tennis player, but not a great deal about the fact that he became a political activist or the very unfortunate circumstances of his death.

Highly recommended.......

I've never been a huge tennis fan but my big sister was and she loved Arthur Ashe and Vitas Gerulaitis, she was especially taken with his post tennis activities.

There is a famous quote from Gerulaitis after he finally beat Jimmy Connors after losing 16 times in a row:

"And let that be a lesson to you all. Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row!"
