div Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 Got this request in from a lad who is writing a piece about the never-finished British Cup match between St.Mirren & Coventry City. Quote I am currently working on a piece about the Anglo-Scottish Cup match between Coventry City and St Mirren from 1987. The first match finished 1-1, but the second leg has yet to happen. I was just wondering whether you knew of anyone who was at the first match, or who can recall why the second leg wasn't played? The Coventry perspective is a lack of sponsor to fund travel costs to Paisley, in addition to fan apathy, but I would really like to include a quote from a St Mirren fan about this game. If you are able to help me with any recollections, or know somebody who can, I would be very grateful. Anyone help? Quote
Magic Monkey Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 I can't help, but is it Simon Gilbert, by any chance? I'd love to see the second leg take place. Especially now they're shite. Quote
portmahomack saint Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 The reason at the time if my memory is right was Coventry couldn't find a suitable date for the return match (they couldn't be arsed) so they forfeited the tie and the trophy, shitebags Quote
Edinbuddie Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 It wasn't an Anglo-Scottish Cup match, it was a one off two leg English v Scottish Cup winners. I've got a similar memory about dates, a piss poor crowd at Coventry, a poor first leg score for Coventry and an inability to find a suitable date. Quote
SBS Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 http://www.stmirren.info/id19.html Looking forward to the second leg after both clubs win their respective upcoming cup finals! Quote
windae cleaner Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 My 2 mates drove down to this game One of them had an Auntie who stayed in Coventry so they spent the night there A crap crowd turned up hence it was scrapped Quote
Liverpool Bud Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 Was there not a comprehensive article about it in Black and white Magazine some issues back? Quote
HSS Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 I was there with around 500 Saints Fans. Due to circumstances beyond my control I only seen the first half. Quote

It is totally superfluous and buddies who were there will remember how the mad monk celebrated his goal for saints to win the 1989-90 season opener at Ibrox Quote
beyond our ken Posted January 10, 2025 Report Posted January 10, 2025 Aside from the article, it will be great to finally see this tie played out. I had forgotten about it other than my son's disappointment at it not happening. Given how the 87-88 season played out for us, maybe it's a good thing we had a bit of a deferral Quote
Jimmy H Posted January 10, 2025 Report Posted January 10, 2025 (edited) I was at this one, 2 of the supporters buses stopped in Leyland just South of Preston for a few hours drinking at lunchtime before continuing. What sticks in my mind was that there had been a pensioner murdered in Paisley that night. Police were stumped and decided to get blood tests from every local with any police record between 18-25 ( mines being stupidly having a piss in Forbes Place when drunk ), they came to my work to see me, told my boss they wanted to speak to me concerning a murder enquiry. Told them the night in question I was in Coventry with 55 other witnesses from my supporters buses, still had to supply a blood test tho. Thankfully they caught the C”nt who committed the crime few weeks later. Edited January 10, 2025 by Jimmy H Quote

Absolutely, could just as easily have said " former Partick Thistle striker" , but I guess, with Rangers highlighted in red anyone searching for them will get a link to this article and they get more advertising revenue Quote
