I think its very harsh to even suggest Lewis would down tools. His work rate, attitude and commitment has always been fantastic.

Absolutely, Morgan wont down tools in that scenario he has so much to play for, although given the abuse some of our players have received from so called supporters like Naismith last season after the club decided to sell him and cash in on his PCA. You wonder why they bother.

makes you wonder what planet the brains of some of our lot actually reside on?

Got to hope that, as a lad with his head screwed on, he, and indeed his agent, might think the best thing is to see out the entire season at St Mirren... keep progressing, keep picking up MoTM awards, pick up Scotland caps, pick up rave reviews, pick up more suitors, and pick up a Championship medal.... and then, instead of getting a decent move in January, get a great move in the summer. We can but hope.

He won't be signing a new deal with us, we know this. Like McGinn, Mallan and McAllister, he won't be around for the long haul, we also know this. We also know that the days of Jim McLean and Dundee United signing players to a hundred year contract are gone. We know that the club are powerless to stop players moving. We know the post-Bosman landscape.

All we can hope is that he plays the patient game and fancies sticking it out for a tilt at the title under Joma Jack and gets his big move just a bit later than January.

Indeed - and hope that when his move comes, we have secured a nice sell-on clause, and Morgan's move is more like Kenny Dalglish & Liverpool and less like, erm, many others. :D

I think many on here aren't grasping the reality of things. If Lewis' agent negotiates a PCA with another club Saints can't do anything about it. It really is that simple. They can't stop the deal. they can't demand a fee. It would be the other club who say, "He's ours. There's nowt you can do about it. Take the 80,000 in May or we might give you a little more if you let him come to us now.

That's the ONLY choice Saints' have.

In the face of that we'll see how determined the Board are to hold onto what might be a "down tools" player who may be concerned not to get injured. The only player I saw busting a gut for us when in that situation was Big Kirk.

Not sure I agree that the compensation figure would be £80k. I did some digging yesterday and the compensation is set based on parameters based upon the quality of the club/league the player moves to. The example I gave would be if he moved to a Category 1 club then the figure would be €400k (Derby are a category 1). You are right we can't stop the deal going through, however the "buying" club would need to be able to pay the compensation and an agreed deal might offer opportunities to stagger payments, or take back on loan for negotiation of the fee in lieu of compensation etc.

For those saying cash in in January and buy a replacement, where might we be playing this season had we cashed in on Mallan last January? Far more beneficial for the club to hold onto players like Morgan and sell when the time is right for the club from a football point of view, not just financially. Getting a bit less money in the summer could well be offset against the rewards of a promotion to the top league.

I agree. A straight replacement for morgan would lose us money too unless we settle for a lesser player.

If Morgan signs for a club outside the UK do we get hee haw a la Jamie Fullarton? If so, let's hope Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven weren't paying attention to the U21 international match the other week.

Was there no something in the John McGinn saga that he could go to the States as they aren't signed up to the compensation scheme, but if he went to Europe we'd have still got compensation?

The general consensus is that English clubs want to get their hands on Scottish talent as early as possible in their careers, because they aren't thought to be receiving the right development north of the border. Look at the feedback Mallan has been getting (from his father on the other thread).

They might believe it's worth paying a premium to get their hands on him six months early, in order for him to be 'ready' by the start of the following season.

the question is, why can't we provide that kind of development and physical preparation in Scotland?

Does it cost a lot of money that we just don't have or is it just that the clubs  and managers don't think it necessary?
