W6Saint
They released him because it was clear he wouldn't play for them again after his dad was bagged. Oh and because he had a serious injury, which prevented other clubs at League 1 level taking a chance with him last season. I'm quite sure it wasn't down to ability. Why do you think guys like Davis, and indeed 99% of players are signed without the need to put them on trial in the first place? Because they are clearly good enough and don't have to prove themselves at our level before being offered a deal. There is enough video footage out there on players these days that trials are essentially no longer needed unless it's purely as an exercise to prove fitness. Name me one successful trialist we've had in the past 15 years. We've certainly had our fair share as well. Tesselaar and Dorman the only ones that spring to mind. billyg
Sunderland are a very average side player wise at this stage , there is no way that they should pish over the top of us in any game with that squad. They won't get near promotion either unless JR brings in another 5 or 6 players.

We didn't put pressure on their defence so couldn't comment on that.

Their youth players such as Honeyman, Gooch and Maja are top talents and are supplemented by a few Premier League quality players like Cattermole and Oviedo - who will stroll it at that level. Not to mention the few additions JR has made so far - McGeouch stood out at our level and Loovens is comfortably English Championship standard. If not the game's a bogey beore the season starts! Wish it was true but in reality we're nowhere near. They've signed arguably two of the best players from the league last season outside of Celtic, Sevco and Aberdeen. Aberdeen POTY didn't move much further up than them to Norwich. If they wished I feel they could likely sign almost any player in the league outside the top three. Scottish football isn't very good, that's why our European teams more often than not get hammered before actual European competiton begins. Sad but true. pozbaird
So, Sunderland have 20k ST holders, a 40k capacity stadium, were in the EPL 18 months ago, so how can we compete with them. Perhaps we could have competed better if we had shown the same organisation and work-rate as them, and like them, had a clear gameplan that didn’t involve our established players being played out of position. It would also help if we had players who look like they know how to put the ball into the net when chances arrive at their feet. Sunderland’s movement and passing for their first goal was so simple, we never came close. Allowances clearly must be made for the fact we had dud trialists scuttling around, but still, a 0-6 hosing? If we are saying we cannot compete with an English third tier club who have suffered back-to-back relegations, have a new manager bedding in, and haven’t been that impressive so far in their own pre-season, then we might as well run up the white flag before we kick off at Celtic, Sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, and basically anyone with more ST holders and a bigger budget than us. Firstly, Stubbs wasn't our manager when he seen them play, and secondly, they weren't on trial with us.

If not the game's a bogey beore the season starts! I think along with most Scots you are completely delusional about the gulf between Scottish and English leagues. We are probably around Conference level with the exception of the top 2 teams up here. That is why we are having to rely on Conference signings and potential starlets and loans from the leagues above that. League 1 and 2 teams and some Conference teams are able to attract better players because they can pay thousands of pounds per week. We cant get near that and we shouldnt try which is why I have doubts about obsessing over eigning players from there. We should go abroad to Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Players from there have a bit more hunger. We are so short sighted in Scotland that it almost hurts to watch it. The getting your excuses in early line that we're ahead of where we expected to be is the most notable element of the interview. Almost as though the club has been taken by surprise, and is therefore unprepared for the task ahead Edited July 23, 2018 by Drew
