Old Weiserbud
I was at Cathkin that night - astonishing game, especially as it was a replay after an end-to-end 3-3 draw at Love Street. I was behind one of the goals and my main recollection is of Jim Rodger banging in several goals from the corner of the penalty box at the other end of the park. Bit vague on who actually played - well what do you expect at my age! - and the programme link above didn't work, but I think we had Jimmy Brown in goal who was ex-Kilmarnock and not a particularly popular signing as I remember, but a good keeper for us. Nice to see this topic come up - good memories for me.

the digger
My friend Bob was a massive Thirds fan and he used to joke that this game haunted him! Saints were 2-0 up at half time and him and all his pals changed ends to see the presumed Thirds fight back in the second half - of course we banged another 6 in and none of them could believe it! In fairness what a season Thirds had that year, finishing third in the league as the Captain says. They scored 100 goals in the league that season ... and conceded 80 - certainly not boring! To think they would only have 6 more seasons before they went under - very sad and a huge loss to the Scottish game.

Old Weiserbud
I'm not much good with computers, EAB, so thanks for providing the info. Some interesting names there and shows how quickly the 1959 cup team changed. I had forgotten that we had Jim Clunie by then - entertaining centre-half, never did anything the easy way. Froggie
I think I am correct in saying that this is the biggest away win in the Scottish cup between two teams in the top division ever. We almost equalled the record of an away win last season in Edinburgh but just missed out.
RickMcD
I was at this game too. Went on a special train from Gilmour Street to Queens Park (I think it was) and walked the rest of the way to Cathkin. What a night! Jocky Robertson was small for a keeper but he was good. Big Jolly scored four. He was a big lump of a guy and when he hit a ball hard by God it moved. We reckoned that with two of Rodger's goals Jocky was in a good position but the force of the shots carried him and the ball over the line. Not sure that was true but I like to think so. Tommy Bryceland was magnificent that night. He scored two and was involved in most of the other six. Last time this match was discussed, there was mention of had it been fixed. I'm not a betting man and I don't know if there was much football betting back then. But as I posted on here before I got to know Tommy reasonably well in the early 80's and he told me when these stories first raised their ugly head he didn't believe a word. But he told me one night that he now knew it was true. He didn't tell me how he knew but he seemed to be certain it was. I didn't like hearing it but I don't see why Tommy would have made it up. Eric Arthur Blair
I think we also have the biggest home win in the Scottish Cup, 15-0 against Glasgow University. I was at both games. I think Arbroath would dispute that.

I was at both games. I think Arbroath would dispute that. 5 minutes ago, shull said: And Dundee Harp When Dundee Harp beat Aberdeen Rovers 35-0 in a Scottish Cup First Round tie on Saturday September 12th 1885 there was a disagreement between the match referee - who thought 37 goals had been scored - and the Harp club secretary who believed the score was 35-0. The ref accepted the lower figure and the score was sent off to the Scottish FA with Dundee Harp officials surely believing they had a record which would last for years. Amazingly though on the same day in the same competition just 20 miles away Arbroath beat Bon Accord 36-0 and they are still in the record books as the top score in any first-class match in Britain. John Petrie’s 13 goals in that match also ranks as the top individual score in Britain. Aberdeen side Bon Accord were in the competition by mistake. They were in fact the Orion Cricket Club who mistakenly had received from the Scottish FA an invitation that should have been sent to Orion FC to enter the Scottish Cup. Taking the opportunity to try a different sport they adopted the name Bon Accord, turning up at the match without proper playing kit before being given a true footballing lesson. The recorded scoreline was 36-0 but the referee Dave Stormont had disallowed a number of good goals to keep the scoreline to below 40. Two seasons later Arbroath hosted the real Orion FC in a Scottish Cup First Round tie – with the scoreline being a far more respectable 18-0!
