If he were to get the job, I certainly hope that his attitude to the youth set up has changed since he left the club. It did leave a fair bit to be desired.

He is not coming In to management , pick the team promote players from youth. Not trying to be too critical Drew you are a good poster. Some are failing to understand the job Gus is being brought in to do.

I think it's a good move. His experience and his eye for a decent player will be a great help to OK and the club. Can't do worse in recruitment than we've had with Stubbs. Welcome back Gus.

You got it Gary spread the word so more grasp why Gus is coming in.

A great victory that night indeed. However taking it in the rounds Mowbray fielded FIVE strikers that night to try and save his ass. It backfired. And if it was just one match, or one or two issues i would agree with you. But his time has been and gone now. Hence why, with all that great experience you laud him for, he's been relegated to the bottom league.

he had a good run, but he's a negative influence from a bygone era.

Only from fans not willing to forgive and forget and base him on how he does the job now. Pity fans will easily forget the man that took us back to the top flight and kept us there, for a few comments he made as a young manager.  Some of which aren't necessarily wrong.

If the TD is to have an oversight of recruitment, then it is reasonable to assume that it will directly impact on the youth academy, Ian.

You're right, though, none of us are clear at present as to what the job - and its responsibilities - will consist of.

A few crazy comments in this thread. From watching Oran's interview, he was pretty transparent in saying that his knowledge of the Scottish game is "limited", and will need a little help with that.

From Oran's POV, someone like Gus will have that knowledge, and be able to take a back seat and guide him into his new role. The important decisions will of course be made by Kearney.

Useful article I found ;

Dan Parnell (right): "There has been some confusion about the role. I think a big reason is the title, which can shift from Director of Football to Technical Director to Performance Director. Many profess to know exactly what a Sporting Director should do, but often the specification is designed and developed ‘on the job’.

There remains no definition of the Sporting Director in academic literature. The following offering aims to give an insight into how the role should work.

Dr Dan Parnell from MMU

Dr Dan Parnell from MMU

The Sporting Director is the person responsible for the overall performance of the various sporting departments, which include first team, Under-21s, academy, scouting, medical and sport science. This responsibility ties hand-in-hand with the Sporting Director’s role, which is to develop and deliver the strategic plan towards achieving success in the club’s sporting aims. The Sporting Director should report directly to the Owner and/or Chief Executive Officer.

The key priorities for the Sporting Director are:

  • Support the first team and head coach
  • Maintain and manage a positive working relationship with the owner
  • Employ the best people within budget as department heads
  • Oversee the implementation of the club’s DNA and identity a suitable playing philosophy across all teams, from first team to Academy.
  • Implement and maintain a scouting network
  • Manage the movement of players in and out of the club
  • Oversee the academy and development teams (extending to community foundations for talent identification)
  • Oversee the performance departments including medical and sport science
  • Oversee the training ground

The Sporting Director is the custodian of the club’s sporting performance and must have:

  • Football industry knowledge
  • Business and financial acumen
  • Ability to lead and develop a high performance culture
  • Ability to develop and deliver a strategy both strategically and operationally
  • Understanding of - and the ability to deliver - good governance
  • Ability to manage change and innovation
  • Ability to manage research (monitor and evaluate) on relevant performance measures

They are the person employed by the owner or board to be the guardian of the club’s future, to protect their investment and bring on-field success through effective leadership and decision making in the short, medium and long-term."

As long as this appointment follows the line of Les Reed at Southampton and not Craig Levein at Hearts it will be beneficial.

Have a read about the set up he created at Southampton after his managerial career started to decline.

A St.Mirren blackbox would be the stuff of dreams.

Buddies should pay Saffampton a licence fee to get access to their info.

Keane, Samaras and...?

His words post match, he did bring on his subs too.

but hey dont take my word for it. Here's the telegraph match report extract. silly me it was six up front, not five!

Celtic's faint hopes of catching Rangers at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League were all but demolished in the most dramatic fashion with their first league defeat at St Mirren in 21 years.

In an astonishing night in Paisley doubles by Buddies' midfielders Andy Dorman and Steven Thomson stunned the Hoops who were booed off the park by the travelling fans at the end.

The Parkhead side, who finished the game with six attackers on the park, remain 10 points behind their Ibrox rivals who have two games in hand.

For all I am a bit "meh" about the whole thing it is interesting to see the likes of Vanzy, Lee Mair and Charlie Adam waxing lyrical about Gus on twitter.

The players all absolutely loved him, even if the fans didn't!

Think the latter was really down to Gus refusing to play the game in terms of continually praising the fans. He never did that.

The cinema line was taken out of context a little, he actually said "a manager of mine once said if you want to be entertained go to the cinema" - he was referring to Bobby Williamson.

As I say, I'm not massively arsed if he comes or doesn't come.

What was a negative influence from him? Was he ham-fisted in what he said at times and a crabbit wee shite? Yeah, probably but I don't recall any issues or disputes coming out of the dressing room at any point in Gus' tenure until the bonus row in the lead up to the cup final (incidentally, a bonus row led by our ex manager who left under a cloud but has also redeemed himself in the eyes of most* supporters). For the most part his players were fiercely loyal to him and the club.

You don't hang about for 7 years at a club if you are detested or a bad influence. As we've seen lately, you're lucky to get 7 weeks.

*most... but not including you.

Here are, what maybe some uncomfortable facts for you.

i insisted the board at the time were wrong to bin/let go of Gus as i couldnt see who they would attract to do better.

please see above line Re Danny Lennon too..!

in the majority calling the Tommy 'Farah' Craig decision bonkers. As was the Teale hospital pass...

almost alone in insisting Murray should have been no where near the club. Many on here deciding that was worth abusing me over.

thought Rae could strengthen us, he did. Felt he was sacked way too early.

thought Ross should have been appointed with an experienced mentor (could've been Gus) he almost relegated us befire turning it round.

was excited by Guti applying for the job, but when the board basically said we are playing it safe/cheap in their recruitment, thought Stubbs was the best of the proposed bunch. Sacked painfully too early, leaving the next guy potentially very big hospital pass.

Oran seems a personable sort, dont think he deserves being saddled with Gus's baggage, whilst trying to sort out a competitive team from the squad.

yeah i am definitely not like MOST fans whose flip flop, fickleness has helped sees us with eight managers since Gus left.

how many did you want sacked?
