Big Boris, Our Prime Minister

Is this the nearest we have to a general politics thread these days?

Anyway my sympathies to the latest group of employees to be shafted by BigBusinessTM - the employees of Arcadia whose owner Philip Green (or maybe his wife) are likely to be living it up Monaco with little remorse for little people they've shafted.

Do I expect the government introduce laws to save further ordinary people suffering the same fate, erm not really, they'll be to busy planning Austerity2 while simultaneously looking forward to what benefits they can get from the chumocracy they have created.

Arcadia has gone into liquidation and this has forced Debenhams with which it has close ties into liquidation, sad news for all employees of these two organizations - 25,000 between them.

Obviously the pandemic is to an extent just hastening the existing trend towards online shopping but it leads to the question of what's gonna happen to the "winners" of the current situation - online giants like Amazon?

Its terrible for the employees who no doubt will get their pensions attacked also....

But I do think, in a lot of cases, this pandemic has merely accelerated the process of the high street shop that does not do or have internet offerings... going bust......

Shopping in Glasgow in the future is going to be a lot quicker

Arcadia is actually in administration not liquidation.

Not much consolation for Debenhams staff though.

More than 240 years in business and it's all gone overnight.

They were established just 33 years after Culloden. That's worth thinking about right there.

Thing with debenhams was that about 2/3 years ago, love him or hate him Mike Ashley was going to but them out but it was the top directors of debenhams that rejected the offer as they would have been first out the door at the time. So in a shocking way a select few have helped this, along with covid of course.

It's amazing that House of Fraser and Sports Direct have managed to carry on under his ownership at moment.

The problem with Debenhams was that most of their shops looked as if they had been trading since Culloden ! The department store / concession format has been on the wain ever since the internet came into being. The surprise is they lasted as long as they did. If ever the wife saw something she fancied in Debenhams she would look at it in store, even try it on if it was clothes, then wait a few weeks until their latest up to 70% off event. No one was paying the full price for anything as they knew it would be reduced in a matter of a few weeks. Try in store, wait and order online safe in the knowledge you knew you liked it / it fitted then order to have it delivered at a lesser price.

Debenhams was formed in 1788, the battle of Culloden was fought in 1746 so that would make it 32 years. :P

Live by the pedantic, die by the pedantic. :death

If I was going for a 1788 reference Ida gone for something down the French Revolution line although the actual starting date/event is still disputed with many people going for 1789...:boxing

Far be it from me to attempt to out-pedant anyBuddie, but...

Debenhams was founded in 1778, it seems.

...to coin a phrase. :P

Oxter was certainly closer to the truth, in that respect.  That's worth thinking about right there.

1788 - 1746 is 42 years but I see antrin has already scored the open goal. 😜

Why can't folk just say well done to Boris on getting married ?
Or just say nothing at all.
Congrats to the pair of them.
Nobody had said anything on this thread for almost 6 months, so they were saying nothing.
