It’ll also give the yard time to build up an order book that will sustain the workforce (hopefully). There are quite big plans afoot with regards to building specialised fishing vessels going forward.

Fingers crossed I'm not convinced simply because 97 million paid out with no ferry ready is nuts.

That would be a problem for the new owners WeeBud. One, I hope they would address quickly.

There is no yard and no ferries if it’s left to go to ruin which would mean the government spending even more money on new ferries......there are two current options, nationalise or the Easedales!!

The problem was they kept changing the spec. and addition work at no extra cost.

The same reason that ended Scott Lithgow's yard with Ocean Alliance...http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2942706

Where was the Scottish Government before McColl step in.

Yep in other words a balls up. Everything should have been drafted at the beginning.

That’s for the work on both ferries so far IoBS and a lot of that has been spent on changes to the original spec

What is the issue with Ferguson marine? They bid for a contract and are now saying they can't deliver as their costs have risen?

Previous contracts went to a Polish yard, if I'm not mistaken were getting unfair subsides from their government.  So could have swallowed up extra costs.

You design a ferry from start to finish. Cal Mac must be responsible the government funded company.

Would they design it or just provide the spec, I think you may also be getting CMAL and CalMac mixed up!!

When I worked at sea our company got 6 new ships built one I worked on had a crew of 400 it was huge two football fields long. I joined the ship out the yard for sea trials. On board was the design team hired by the company who specialize on ship design. These experts were at the yard overseeing the construction of the ship from start to finish which was built on time in budget in Singapore.  Dont have any idea how Cal Mac go about these two ferry's. The two Rothesay ferry's were built on time and budget in Poland.

Your last bit is correct Norway, Denmark, Sweden build bridges and tunnels to islands. Cal Mac run at a loss they are propped up with government cash. Western Ferry's do the same job as cal Mac but make a profit.
Western ferries only operate on 1 route as far as I know. Calmac operate on dozens some of which won't be profitable but need to run to serve their community.

McColl has already received £45m in Scottish government loans because of cashflow problems with the ferry contract.

Which has to be paid back with interest. Different from funding.

Not so.

Lots of businesses would queue up for that.

I have met McColl. He is a very shrewd man with an eye to the bottom line. Nothing wrong with that. Using other people's money is a good move.

I don’t think Western Ferries were forced to operate RTE either although I could be wrong

Which takes you back to bridges and tunnels like Scandinavian countries do. Anyone passing Ferguson on a regular basis will be able to tell you the ship in the water got a paint job put cardboard funnels on it all with Cal Mac trade Mark's. All this just so the SNP could get publicity for the new ferry's that was no where ready last year. .. then the one painted went into detration. You could see port holes being cut out  , the ferry was rusting. Now it has another new paint job on it. Have you any idea how much it costs to paint a ship all for a political publicity stunt. The whole thing stinks by the way I vote SNP.

Thank Ricky.
Interesting article from severin carroll who is no fan of the SNP however reading his article it appears Ferguson made a baws of either the tender or the contract.

Every chance of that I think TP.

By the way Clyde Blowers bought the yard out of administration for £600,000.
